There has been some talk over at Web Hosting Chat about creating a Web hosting radio station. I’m really excited to see how far this project will go. This show has proven that there is an audience out there for Web hosting and Web development talk, so why shouldn’t there be a radio station for it? If you’d like to see it happen, be sure to stop by Web Hosting Chat and let them know how you feel.

Web Hosting Headlines

Now it is time for all the latest Web hosting headlines from around the world. The Hosting headlines are provided by the Web Host Industry Review. If you’d like to read more about any of the stories covered here, links can be found in the transcript for the show.

Domain name registration and Internet services provider Network Solutions announced on Wednesday that it has introduced three new Web hosting packages designed to provide complete solutions for individuals and businesses.

There is no doubt in my mind that Network Solutions is going into the Web hosting buisness to compete with the folks at Go Daddy specifically. Just look at the two companies, and they are almost mirror images of each other. Both made their names in domain name registration, and are now offering other services to expand their wallets. I wonder how much of a blow this will be to the little guys in the Web hosting world?

Web hosting industry conference HostingCon announced on Monday that online registration for this year’s event, which will be held in Chicago, Illinois on June 6 and 7, has begun.

I’ve been talking with the guys behind the HostingCon event about doing some interviews about the event before and after it happens. I wish I was able to attend this year’s event because it does sound like it should be very informative and lots of fun. Maybe in a few years, once myself and this hosting event have grown I can do a live show from the conferance floor.

Email filtering services provider Roaring Penguin Software, announced on Tuesday that its CanIt anti-spam software would be available for free to organizations with up to 50 email users.

This is pretty good news for those of us who hate spam. I wish more companies would make this type of effort. The only problem is that your common guy on the street isn’t going to get much use out of this. Why? Well it has to be installed from the server side, and there is just too much system admin jargon to go into here to get it up and running. I do congradulate Roring Penuin Software though for putting the effort out to get this done.

Web hosting provider C I Host announced last week that it would sponsor professional poker player Dutch Boyd during his competition on the poker circuit. Boyd, who will wear C I Host’s orange logo on his attire, will make his first sponsorship appearance at a tournament held at Harrah’s Rincon Casino in San Diego, California from February 27 to March 2. The coverage is expected to draw over a million viewers, C I host said.

So could we now start seeing Web hosting companies logos on race cars at NASCAR? Along with GoDaddy and the whole Super Bowl deal, it is good to see Web hosting companies coming out of the dark and into the main stream. I’d like to see more commercials, advertisements and more for more Web hosting services. Is it finally cool to be in the Web hosting buisness? If so, my greatest geeky dreams are coming true.

Web Hosting Commentary and Thoughts

I thought I would try something new this week. Seeing as how we have both Web hosts and Web hosting clients listening to the show, I’d like to give them both a little of what they came to listen to. So for the next few weeks I’ll be focusing one of my featured stories for the Web hosts, and the other for the average guy on the street. Remember, if there is anything you’d like me to discuss on the show, be sure to send me an E-mail to mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Speaking of the average guy or gal on the street, did you know you too can become your own Web host? Web hosting reseller accounts are growing in popularity because they make it really to resell Web hosting space. That isn’t the only reason people are using them though. Many folks are using Web hosting reseller accounts to manage multiple Web sites they might own.

With the benifits of having all your Web hosting accounts under one roof, it makes manging them a lot easier. Most Web hosts won’t let you manage more than one Web site from one single shared Web hosting account. They will often recomend that you instead look into a Web hosting reseller account. Why? It makes it easier on both you and your Web host.

For the Web hosts out there, how close do you watch your Web hosting support staff? Since a lot more folks are doing remote support these days, it isn’t like you can hover over their desk and watch what it is they are doing. As far as you know they could be playing Tetris and not answering help desk tickets. The solution?

Most of the time, you need no solution because the proof is in the pudding. If you have a guy who says, “Yeah Boss, I’m working hard here!” and you haven’t seen a help desk ticket cleared in three hours, you have a problem. Some Web hosts out there though feel that it is hard to fire somebody who works for you hundreds of miles away. So these lazy folks get a free ride, and you are flipping the bill for it.

If you want my opinion, Web hosts should work faster to cut the fat off of their Web hosting support services. If somebody isn’t doing their job, fire them. Don’t forget that with every person they avoid or fail to answer, you could be loosing money. You are paying them to loose money for you? It is a loose/loose situation. Let your staff know that when you are on the proverbial clock, you expect them to work. Keep an eye on the chats and the help desk. Make sure you are getting your money’s worth before it is too late.

Mitch,

I am having trouble with my Web host. They won’t give me my domain and are causing problems with my transfer. What can I do?

Jen

Well Jen, I don’t know all the details about your situation, but this is just one more reason why I have always said not to get your domain name and Web hosting from the same company. Some times you might like the way the company handles their Web hosting, but not their domain names. This way you are not totally tied down to just one company. Not all companies would do this type of thing, but some will. Right now you’ll have to keep waiting and asking for your information you need. I bet if you keep asking them kindly, you will get your problem fixed.

Mitch,

Loved the show this week. Are there anymore shows out there like this?

Monica

There are lots of diffrent podcasts out there today. One place to look for new and popular podcasts is PodcastAlley.com. Along with this show, you should see many more shows about many various subjects. Right now however, I belive I am the only Web hosting based show in town.
