Who am I? Why I am the most charismatic man in the Web hosting business today, Mitch Keeler. If this is your first time to tune into the show, welcome! This show is for the Web hosts as well as the Web hosting clients out there today. We cover the Web hosting world from top to bottom and try to have a little fun during the ride. Today we’ll be covering the latest Web hosting news, some of my own hosting views and your Web hosting questions.
First though, I’d like to let you all know that I actually bought myself an MP3 player last week. It is a Dell Pocket DJ and I think I’m truly in love. The main reason I wanted to get it is so that I can listen to some of the other great podcasts there are out there today. I also thought it might be a little easier to explain how to get my show onto this little device if I had one myself.
Another thing worth mentioning is that my Web hosting e-book, Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting is out and ready for purchase. Inside the pages you’ll find out everything you’ve ever wanted or needed to know about the Web hosting world. For Web hosting clients, it is a good resource to keep coming back to. For the Web hosts out there, it is a good place to find out how to better communicate with your Web hosting clients. So if you haven’t picked up your copy yet, you can find out how to do so by clicking the link for it in the show notes for this episode of The Web Hosting Show.
Last week The Web Hosting Show was also mentioned in the latest edition of The Hosting Chronicles, a Web site dedicated to Web hosting articles and support. Johnder wrote a great feature story about the progress of the show so far, a little about my history in the Web hosting business along with where I see this show going to in the future. If you haven’t read it yet, I’ll leave a link to it in the show notes.
Web Hosting Headlines
The Web Hosting Headlines are sponsored by The Web Host Industry Review. The Web Host Industry Review is your top resource for all of today’s Web hosting news. They can be found at www.thewhir.com. If you want to read anymore about the stories mentioned in today’s show, links can be found in the show notes for this episode.
FastServers.net Spices Up HostingCon 2005
Dedicated Web hosting provider FastServers.net announced on Friday that it would host a live casino and post-convention party during HostingCon 2005, taking place June 6-7 in Chicago, Illinois.
Now that really makes me wish I could attend this year’s event. Sadly though, I don’t think I will be able to make it. An open bar, gambling and Web hosting geek… you know that is going to be one happening party!
Yahoo! Extends $4.98 Domain Offer
According to research and analysis firm Netcraft, Internet portal and Web hosting provider Yahoo! (yahoo.com) had extended its $4.98 domain offer, the fourth time since the promotion was launched on December 10, 2004. The third extension of the promotion was made last month.
People like a good deal, so I could see Yahoo making this a permanent price drop from now on. Heck, they might as well. It would save me from having to announce each month that they are planning to extend it even further.
1&1 eShop Hosting Plans Offer PayPal
Web hosting provider 1&1 Internet announced on Wednesday that its eShop Web hosting packages will now offer PayPal as a preferred payment method.
PayPal is definitely a feature to get happy about and I am happy to hear about 1&1 getting this done. I just wish PayPal had a real competitor in this area. They seem to be the only one though who can really make it work.
Interview with a Web Hosting Mad Man
I have a special treat for you today. We have the author of the one and only e-book you should own about the wild and wacky world of Web hosting. Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting is one of the best books I have ever read about the Web hosting world. After weeks of negotiations and large sums of money changing hands I have the man, the myth, the legend and the author of this great work Mitch Keeler on today’s show.
Web Hosting Views
My Web Hosting Views are sponsored by Data Center Talk, the place to go to get all the latest and greatest conversation on the world of data centers. You can find them at www.datacentertalk.com.
For the Web hosting clients who might be out there in the audience today, you have a lot of questions don’t you. Ask any Web host out there and he or she will tell you a list of questions that get asked most often. More times than not, if you compare the questions between hosts, they will be the same. I am looking to answer some of the most common Web hosting questions out there today. So here are a few, in no specific order.
Is domain name registration and Web hosting the same thing? No they are not. Most of the time you will have to go through two different processes to get them both done. It really changes from Web host to Web host, but 90 percent of the time that is how it is done.
How long does it take for a domain name to propagate? That sounds a little dirty but I promise you there is nothing dirty about it. You see the act of propagation of the domain name is it pretty much getting spread from data center to data center around the world. This way everyone around the globe can type in your domain, www.webhostingshow.com and get right to your Web site. Now I know there will be a few dozen people who say there is more to it than that. The thing you got to know though is that it might be 24 to 72 hours before your domain name actually starts going to your Web hosting space.
Web hosting clients are also responsible for renewing their Web hosting domains. It is not up to your Web host to keep you up to date about this either. It should be your responsibility to keep up with. If you feel like you won’t remember that you need to update it in a year then go into your billing setting for your domain name register and set it to auto bill your credit card. Most domain name companies will let you do this. Most domain name companies will also warn you 90 or 60 days before your domain name’s up for renewal. Some don’t though, so check with your domain name register and make sure you have all your ducks in a row.
Just remember there is no such thing as a stupid question folks. If you have any other questions you’d like to send my way, just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll be more than happy to get your answered on the show.
Web Hosting Interviews
The Web Hosting Interviews are sponsored by Enfinity Hosting. Enfiniy Hosting can be found at www.enfinityhosting.com. Speaking of which, since this is a new feature to the show I thought I would speak with the folks at Enfinity Hosting first. I had a chance to speak with CJ a few days ago and now here is our one on one interview.
If you would like to appear on the show or have something to say, please get a hold of me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and we’ll get you on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show. Our first E-mail for the day comes from Bob. Bob writes:
Hi Mitch,
I’m currently in the process of building web sites for people (churches, small companies) I have ISPHost.org as a web host and I am allowed a 10 domain limit where I can host multiple sites. My question is, should I use my host when creating some ones site or have them pay for a new host package?
Thanks,
Bob
Well Bob you could, but I would probably recommend that you look at purchasing a reseller Web hosting account. You see the name can fool you, but you don’t have to sell your Web hosting to own a reseller Web hosting account. The fact of the matter is that owning a reseller account makes managing multiple domains easier. Why? It is easier because you can do it all in one place. Just assign each domain it’s own control panel, and divide up the bandwidth and disk space. I’ll include a few links about Web hosting reseller accounts, bandwidth and disk space in today’s show notes.

The next e-mail is really a comment that was left on my Mitchelaneous Web hosting and Web development blog. They didn’t really leave a name, so I will just refer to them as, “that guy”. That guy writes:
Hey Mitch,
I have used several free hosts in the past and have learned a few things. First, its a bad idea to go with a small player, because they have more downtime and often have short life spans. The best free host I have found so far is FreeWebs.com. I was wondering what you thought about them.
They took a completely different approach to web publishing, and are constantly adding new features that go well beyond hosting. What else is interesting is they have two tracks, beginner and advanced. The advanced track is more for people who just want to host and manage their files. As for the beginner track, its pretty incredible. Hard to explain but its a better system than I have seen out there. I am not surprised that FreeWebs seems to be the fastest growing free host (see Alexa)
You should ask them for a Premium Account so that you can check out all the features and let us know what you think!
Well free Web hosting can be nice, and I don’t doubt that this company is on the rise. I still stand by my thoughts though that free Web hosting is pretty much for the beginner crowd out there. I wouldn’t trust any of my important Web sites with a free Web host. You pretty much get what you pay for these days in the Web hosting world. However if you just want to get your feet wet, there are plenty of good and free Web hosts out there to choose from.
I recently wrote an article about free Web hosting on Mitchelaneous. I’ll leave a link to that article in the show notes so you can check out more of my thoughts on the issue.
