Neumann. “Our hope is that we can, through this offer, enhance the lives and advance the technical capabilities of the entire Internet community.”
Blog network Weblogs Inc. is seeking a new hosting provider after a series of outages in recent weeks, including one that occurred last Thursday at its flagship network Engadget, according to a report by research firm Netcraft.

Tip of the Week
The tip of the week is a new segment I thought of while sitting on the can. It is my chance to give you a quick tip on how to better perform in the Web hosting world.
This week’s tip is for both Web hosts and Web hosting clients. The tip is to stay away from the word “Unlimited”. I know there are a lot of opinions about the word in the Web hosting buisness. Some say it is no diffrent than what the cell phone companies do while others say it is evil. What do I think? Well, Web hosting clients shouldn’t get tricked into signing up just because they see the word unlimited plastered all over the Web page. You still need to ask questions and find out the real limitations behind that unlimited promise. For the Web hosts out there, stop relying on using the word unlimited to get customers! People like quality not sales gimmicks.
If you have any tips you’d like to share, make sure you let me know! Just drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and we’ll be sure to include your tip in the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
Web Hosting Thoughts, Views and Ideas
All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are sponsored by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.
Atari 2600 Web Server
I ran across this story over at digg.com and just couldn’t give up on mentioning it on the show. I’m a big fan of the Atari 2600, it was my first gaming machine. I have to admit though, the thought never crossed my mind to try to turn it into a Web server. I think I have that very “Star Raider” controler they talk about in the article as well. Nice to see that old Atari box still being useful even after all these years.
New Flash Media Player
Thanks to the folks at Wimpy, I know have a flash player for you to use. Just click the play button on the right hand side of every single Web page here on The Web Hosting Show’s Web site. The show should automatically start playing for you. Make sure you let me know if you have any problems!
Real 24/7 Web Hosting Support?
After reading this thread over at Web Hosting Chat, I started to wonder myself how many companies really do have 24/7 support? Is it really possible to have somebody around all the time, every single day of the year? Well it really depends on how your support is set up. If you just have a few local friends working for you it might be a little harder. However if you outsource some of your support then it might be a little easier. This way not everybody would be in the same timezone as you so it would be easier to ask them to watch odd hours of the night. In my opinion though, I think 24/7 support is something people are happy to have but they don’t care how it happens.

The Web Hosting Show Thanks You!
I promise I’m not going to start crying like a little baby. I just want to thank all my sponsors and everybody who has been listening to this show since day one. A lot of great people have bent over backwards to help me out with this show and I am very grateful. At just 10 shows we are getting downloads in the range of 100 to 130 a week. I had never thought I’d get numbers like that. So for those of you out there who are fans of what we are trying to do on The Web Hosting Show, I just want to say thanks!

Web Site Design Help
This new Web site design help segment is another idea that just came to me recently. Since I have been receiving so many URLs from so many folks who want to get a Web site reviewed on the show, I thought I could make it a semi-regular segment.
This week’s Web site comes from Jake who wants me to take a look at his hosting Web site. Unfortunately though the Web site isn’t coming up. One thing I can mention though already is get away from the cjb.net domain name. Domain names are cheap these days! Just go check out Go Daddy’s prices to see what I am talking about. That way you might be able to get a better domain name than the one you have. I’ll take a look next week though to see if your Web site is up and if it is, I’ll give you a second chance.
If you have any Web sites out there that you would like me to take a look at, just send me an e-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll be sure to take it apart on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show, the voice of the Web hosting world.
Web Hosting Comments Questions and Answers
The Web hosting comments, questions and answers are brought to you by Web Host Gear. If you are looking for some great Web hosting tutorials, this is the place to go. They really are the hosting resource for professionals.
E-mail Limits
George via Hotmail wants to to about the limitations of e-mail accounts you might get with a Web hosting account. He says that he has been shopping at several diffrent places but notices the higher the price for the account, the more e-mail accounts he can create. Why is this so?
Well some places choose to limit the number of e-mail accounts to just put a control over your hosting account. Honestly though, these days more and more Web hosts out there are allowing for people to have “Unlimited” E-mail accounts set up. The thing to remember is if you are given an “unlimited” number that really means you can create as many as you want, as long as it fits in within your disk space and bandwidth for the account in question.
Domain Names Registrations and Web Hosting
Mike wants to know a simple answer to a simple question. It seems he just signed up for a Web hosting account, but noticed two different companies coming up on his credit card statement. One was from his Web host and the other was from some company he had never heard of. After some detective work he figured out the other mystery charge came from his domain name registration. He wants to know why his domain name was registered with these folks when he thought he was doing it with his Web host.
Some Web hosts out there resell domains through bigger companies. Since not every Web host can be an ICANN domain name register, they have to find loop holes to work around. There are several domain name registration companies out there that work like this. They give the Web host a pretty interface to work with so it looks like they are doing the domain name registrations, but really they aren’t.
It really isn’t a bad thing though. You might just have to go through a few extra steps when you go looking for domain name support. Most Web hosts will then direct you to the support team of the domain name registration company since they have little control over the backend of the domain names on that end. This is just one of the reasons why I usually recommend that folks get Web hosting and domain name registrations at two different places.
