The Planet Wins ICANN Accreditation
Managed Web hosting provider The Planet Internet Services announced on Thursday that it had recently been accredited as a domain registrar by ICANN, the body that oversees the domain name system.
“Receiving ICANN accreditation shows that the industry knows it can expect best in class solutions from The Planet,” says Sam Fleitman, vice president of information systems for The Planet. “It extends our offerings to cover even more of customers’ end-to-end hosting needs.” The Planet is currently offering .com and .net domains for $5.99 per year and will soon offer additional top-level domains such as .org, .biz, .info and .us.
WebHost Automation to Release Helm 4
Web hosting automation software developer WebHost Automation announced on Wednesday that it had released details of the next version of the Helm control panel.
The company says Helm 4 will be officially released later this year. A live demonstration of the product will be made at HostingCon 2005 in Chicago in June. Helm 4 will include a new user interface, improved server-to-server communications, load balanced distribution, secure and optimized data transmission, cross-data-center support, unlimited users levels and a full-featured API for expanding Helm’s feature set.
Go Daddy Top Registrar, Says Study
Domain registrar and Web hosting provider Go Daddy announced on Tuesday that according to current statistics provided by domain industry analysis firm Name Intelligence , it had become the largest ICANN-accredited domain registrar in the world, surpassing Network Solutions.
According to Name Intelligence, Go Daddy’s status as the world’s largest registrar is based on the total number of domains under its management and applies to the .com, .net, .org, .biz and .us domain extensions. No other registrar other than Network Solutions has ever held the top position, says Jay Westerdal, CEO of Name Intelligence.

Tip of the Week
The tip of the week is a new segment I thought of while sitting on the can. It is my chance to give you a quick tip on how to better perform in the Web hosting world.
This week’s tip is to not put all your eggs in one basket. I’ve said it in passing the last twelve weeks of doing this show and the last few years I’ve been in the world of Web hosting. It just is not a good mix. When you are shopping for Web hosting you should buy your domain name, your Web hosting, and whatever other services you need from different places. If you are a Web host you shouldn’t have all your Web hosting servers located at one specific spot. Web hosting collocation can by your best friend. Now the reason for all of this is simple. You don’t want to be stuck with one company or one bad Web host. If you register everything with them, it makes it much harder to change if you aren’t happy. So next time you think you are going to register everything with one company, think for a minute then decide to scatter your resources. I promise you in the long run it will be much easier on you to keep everything under control.
If you have any Web hosting tips or tricks you’d like to let me know about, make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting TV
Who would have ever thought that there would be such a thing as Web hosting television? Thanks to the folks at The Web Host Industry Review there now is. I have to say I am really excited to see where this project is going to go next. Right now they give you several of the top Web hosting headlines from the past week, and you can choose to watch one of them or all of them together. Think of it as a collection of the top of the stories you’d see on CNN or Fox News. It is very well done, and as I said before I just can’t wait to see what they do next with it. The Web Host Industry Review TV is updated every Saturday, so go check it out and let me know what you think.

Web Hosters Anonymous?
There are so many habits you get stuck in from working in the world of Web hosting, I don’t even know where to begin. I guess the most annoying one is the fact that I have to check my E-mail every hour on the hour. Then once I get a few of them in my inbox, I feel the need to clear them out like they were help desk tickets. The other Web hosting professionals out there in the audience will know what I mean but I’m afraid a few others might not. Think of it as what would happen if you worked in a box factory for a few years then quit. You’d still feel the need to make boxes, but you can’t. So you have to find other ways of dealing with the urges.

Web Site Design Help
All of The Web Hosting Show’s Design Help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.
Now last week this segment didn’t get off to much of a roll because the Web site I was suppose to be reviewing was down. I’m going to give Jake one more shot though and hopefully I’ll be able to give him a little help with his new Web hosting company, Big Fish Hosting. The first thing I notice is that he took my suggestion from last week and got himself a real domain name.
First things first, I’d work on the layout of the Web site. Give me a few more Web pages. Break things up a bit. Tell me a little more about yourself and why I should do my Web hosting with Big Fish! I like the fact that you are going after the podcasting folks out there. Give me some more details about what it is that you get with a Web hosting account though. Also with the name “Big Fish” there are a lot of fishing gimmicks you could word in there. Instead of saying you have a “special deal”, why not call it the “catch of the day”! See what I’m saying? Other than that though, it is a good start but I’d like to see what you have developed in a few more weeks after having some more time to get the Web site up and going.
Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you send me an E-mail to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
