Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Every so often you just need a quick nugget of knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own personal writing space where I go one on one with you everyday with some of my Web hosting articles, random postings and updates on my current projects.

This week’s tip is all about FTP. If you have a Web hosting account, chances are you have a FTP client, right? Wrong! Some people are still accessing the files on their Web hosting account by the control panel’s file manager. It does not have to be so hard. Personally I use SmartFTP but there are a million and one choices out there today. The best thing to do is to try out a few and find the one that works best for what you want it for. Here are a few links that might help out:

About.com – Top 4 FTP Clients for Windows

Web Hosting Thoughts, Views and Ideas

All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are sponsored by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.

I am a very hard guy to get mad. Sure things happen that piss me off, but it takes something pretty big to get me into full rant and rave mode. What has got me so ticked today? I have started to get trackback spam from Web hosts. Now I am used to the “lets play poker” and male enhancement junk but why is it that a Web hosting company is starting to jump onto this band waggon? Here is just a sample of the post I made on Friday about this on my blog, Mitchelaneous:

Now this is pretty damn bad if you ask me. I just logged in to my Blogware account to check on both The Web Hosting Show and Mitchelaneous to see if I had any comment or trackback spam to delete.

I noticed I had a trackback from “Chriss Blog” for the article I wrote about “Web Hosting Deal Too Good To Be True? Stay Away!” a few months ago. So I clicked the link to see what “Chriss Blog” had to say about me. From the sample quote I got, it seemed good enough.

You can read about the rest of my troubles with the trackback Web hosting spam on Mitchelaneous!

For those of you who want more of The Web Hosting Show each and every week, I did an interview with Vito Centini, President of Netasis Internet Inc. You can download the entire interview from The Web Hosting Show’s hosting interview section.

Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you’d like to hear me cover on The Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Site Design Help

All of The Web Hosting Show’s Design Help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.

This week’s Web site I’ll be looking at comes from cheaperforyou over at the BrowseHosts forums. The new Web site is PixonDVD.com. For those of you playing along at home, see if you can spot anything else that needs to be changed or fixed in your opinion and let cheaperforyou know.

First things first, the top left corner image took a long time for me to load, and I’m on DSL. You might want to bring down the file size on that image as much as you can without hurting the quality of the image. I really like the quote on the top of the main Web page there, really helps the visitor understand what it is that you do. I’m not a big fan of the scrolling marquee at the top of some of the Web pages. In my personal opinion it just kind of gets annoying after a while.

I’d like to see some more text on some of the Web pages. Just having a few sentences on some of the pages seems like a wasted chance at getting a few more clients. Make sure you have everything you could ever say about your business said right there on your Web site. On the “specials” page, you could go more in depth with past specials, current specials, why they are special, what you get, and throw in a few neat graphics in there as well. You could make seasonal special deals, like “March Picture Madness” or “Christmas Joy Special”. Other than that though, it looks like a good start! Can’t wait to see what you do with it in the future.

Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you send me an E-mail to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Web Site of the Week

The Web hosting Web site of the week is brought to you by Banners World. Banners World is the number one place to visit to get all your Web site graphics, banners and designs done. You can find them on the Web at www.bannersworld.com.

This week’s Web hosting Web site of the week is Lockergnome. Now most people would say that it has little to do with Web hosting. I have to disagree though. Why? Well I’ve been putting as much Web hosting goodness as they will let me in there. Another reason is that it is one of the world’s best technology resources out there today. No mater what you are interested in, if it has something to do with technology, Lockergnome has you covered. I have to say I have been a Lockergnome contributor for some time now, but even before I was on the staff I was a big fan of what they put out. So go check out Lockergnome and tell them that The Web Hosting Show sent you there!

Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Questions and Answers

The Web hosting comments, questions and answers are brought to you by Web Host Gear. If you are looking for some great Web hosting tutorials, this is the place to go. They really are the hosting resource for professionals.

This week’s E-mail comes from Joe. Joe wants to know what a .htaccess file is and what can he do with it?

“Hey Mitch, Kicking new show loved the emails. I have a question to get on the show. I see .htaccess files talked about at some places but I dont know why I should need it or what it is. Can you help?”

Well Joe, I think I can. Think of a .htaccess file as a “to do list” for your Web hosting account. By putting in a few commands here and there you can do a plethora of different things with it. Just by doing a Google search on .htaccess brings up dozens of different ways you can use .htaccess files. I wrote a few articles on the matter a few months ago and I’ll make sure I link to them in the show notes for this week’s edition of The Web Hosting Show.
