Web Hosting and Purple Cows?
I’ve been saying it for some time now, and it seems like others are noticing it as well. Web hosting in general is boring. There are not enough companies out there thinking outside of the box trying to make the Web hosting world more interesting to your average folks out there. The problem is those average folks are the audience they need to reach.
Jarrod things that a few purple cows could help the Web hosting industry…
Have you ever read the book Purple Cow by marketing genius Seth Godin? If so, then you’ll see where I’m heading with this post already. For those of you who haven’t read the book, do so, you will absolutely not regret it.
In a nutshell, the Purple Cow is about being amazing and unique. Funny how the web hosting industry is pretty much the exact opposite of that, don’t you think? Web hosting has become just another one of “those things”, it’s unremarkable, every host offers just about the same thing for about the same price (give or take…) and, dare I say it, pretty much boring! We need some Purple Cows to show up in hosting, the whole industry will benefit from it, and the host who can pull it off will be huge for it.
A few attempts have been made recently, such as ChiliPepperWeb offering detailed sets of instructions to their customers in hopes of educating them; 1 & 1 giving away free Web cams, or WebDivisor giving away $200,000 worth of web design, but web hosts need to push forward and continue setting themselves apart from the pack.
I challenge all the Web hosts out there reading this today to excite me. Get me excited with something you are doing, anything at all. I double dog dare you to think outside the box.
