Our caller today wants to know of other podcast hosting solutions out there today. Well it just happens that I have a long list of podcast hosting solutions ready! I did a roundup of all the podcast hosting services out there a few weeks ago on Mitchelaneous.
Mitchelaneous – Podcast Hosting
Out of all of them that I looked at, I’d still have to say that Eric Rice’s Audioblog.com is still my favorite. You don’t have to go with a special podcast hosting solution though. You could just set up a hosting account just about anywhere, put in some blogging scripts and do it the long way. Some of these podcast hosting services do make things a lot easier for the novice user though.
Remember to subscribe to the Web Hosting Show’s RSS feed via iTunes, Odeo, or any other service out there you might use. Also go by PodcastAlley.com and vote for us. Every vote counts and you would be helping me out a lot by doing so.

SmartyHost Introduces Blog Hosting
Australian Web hosting provider SmartyHost announced on Tuesday that it had introduced the blog hosting solution SmartyBlog. SmartyBlog, priced at $10 per month, comes with a domain name, hosting, technical support and a publishing tool.
Mitch’s Thoughts: There are more and more “special” hosting solutions popping up each and every day. You have podcast hosting, blog hosting, forum hosting. I even saw a company offering wiki hosting the other day. More companies are looking to carve out their own piece of the Web hosting landscape by not offering your regular Web hosting account. I think this is just the beginning of a trend we will see rise for a very long time indeed.
Go Daddy Selling .Jobs Domains
Domain registrar and Web hosting provider The Go Daddy Group announced on Tuesday that its three domain name divisions will now offer the .jobs top-level domain. The .jobs extension serves the human resources community and is backed by the Society for Human Resources Management.
Mitch’s Thoughts: Now comparing this with last week’s news story about the .travel domain names, I like this domain name extension a heck of a lot more. The .jobs extension is easy to remember and you know what you are going to get… or do you? Is every .com you go to a commercial Web site? These days, unless it is strictly enforced, not too many people pay attention to the domain name extensions. Everybody and their grandmother associates the Internet with the phrase “.com”. So if you want a domain name, I’d try to go that route first.
Domain Pricing Steady, Netcraft Says
According to research and analysis firm Netcraft, Global Name Registry’s offer of a free 60-day trial on .name domains was the only major pricing change in a month when .com domain retail prices held steady after falling for several months.
Mitch’s Thoughts: I think the domain name wars are far from over, but I guess you could say they are settling down for a little while. Honestly, how much cheaper can you make your standard domain name anyways? Give the Web hosting world six months or so and they will find another aspect of Web hosting to bargain with to get more customers.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week
Every so often you just need a quick nugget of knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own personal writing space where I go one on one with you everyday with some of my Web hosting articles, random postings and updates on my current projects.
This week’s Web hosting tip of the week is all about watching the network and servers your Web site might be hosted on. Does your Web host provide you with uptime stats for the servers? Will they let you know what services are up and running, and which ones are not available right now? One of the things I found exciting about TotalChoice Hosting is that they had a entire Web site dedicated to getting this type of information out there to the public. Here’s a link to their status Web site:
TotalChoice Hosting – Project Hawk-eye
If you visit the Web site, make sure to look for the “project hawk-eye” logo, because that I designed and drew myself while working for the company. So that is just one example of a nice set of tools your Web host should be offering to you. Do they? Let me know! I’d love to see more examples of this type of service in action.

Where/How to Learn Beginners HTML
I got an e-mail from a guy last week who wanted to know where and how he could learn how to master the basics of HTML. For those new to the Web hosting world, it can be a very scary place. Thankfully though there are more than a few places that master at helping anybody in the world learn the basics.
I pointed him into the direction of two places I learned the ropes from. The first one was W3 School’s HTML section. They have more than enough information to get anybody started into the world of Web page design. The second place I pointed him to was WebMonkey. WebMonkey’s beginners section is still one of the best places Online to learn how to master the art of HTML.
Have any more learning resources I failed to mention? Leave a comment on today’s show notes so you can be sure to help out anybody else out there who needs a little push when it comes to learning HTML basics.
I Want The Best/Cheapest Web Host
There are a lot of people out there who seem to be asking the same question. Every so often I’ll get an e-mail from somebody wanting to know the best and the cheapest Web hosts out there. Well I am afraid to burst any bubbles out there, but that is just not how the Web hosting world works. Just because somebody is cheap, that doesn’t mean they are good.
On the other hand there are a lot of cheap Web hosts that do offer quality service. Before you purchase a Web hosting account you need to make a check list of things you want to do with that account. Give that to the Web hosts you might want to sign with, and see what they are willing to offer to you.
Do Free Web Hosts Make Money?
While doing a little forum surfing, I noticed this thread over at Web Hosting Talk.
There are a lot of good points mentioned there about why not many free Web hosts survive too long in today’s market. Right now it still takes money to make money, and it takes money to keep things up and running. If you are doing free hosting, you have to make up the lost income in another way. Maybe you provide ads on the free hosting sites? Maybe you charge for support? Whatever it is that you do, you are fighting an uphill battle.
There is always the exception though. A few shows back I mentioned Moved.in as a new free hosting alternative. So far they have been able to stay up and running and have just rolled out with a new front page design worth checking out. So is it possible to survive as a free Web hosting company? Yes. Is it likely? I would have to say no.
Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you’d like to hear me cover on The Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
Web Site Design Help
All of The Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.
This week I thought I’d do another quick and helpful design tip for you folks since the pickings were slim this week for Web sites to review. Remember, if you want me to check out your Web site and give your layout a review, just drop me an e-mail.
How many browsers do you check your Web site layout on? One? Two? If you are only checking your Web site layout in Internet Explorer, then you might be in trouble. Browsers such as Firefox and Opera are on the rise right now, and not throwing them into the mix when checking out how a layout works might be shutting a lot of folks out.
I know I pretty much only use Firefox these days, unless I’ve got to do a Windows Update. Then I’ll dust off IE one more time to get that task done. Personally I like to check out my new layouts and designs in both IE and Firefox. Putting both of them on your must check list will keep you on the safe side 99.9% of the time.
The most important thing I want you to remember is that not all Web sites are equal, and they are not all consumed in the same way. So take those other browsers into consideration next time you get an itch to play with your CSS.
Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you send me an E-mail to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
