Objections to .XXX Domains

This is just crazy.

The Bush administration is objecting to the creation of a .xxx domain, saying it has concerns about a virtual red-light district reserved exclusively for Internet pornography.

I just read about this (link via News.com) and have to say I am totally amazed by the whole situation. I hate to burst and bubbles there might be out there, but yes, there is dirty adult material Online. This would be the case with or without the .xxx domain name.

When we have such a hard time blocking spam, viruses, spyware and junk from our computers, you would think the government would be all for making that easier to filter. All your grandmother would have to do is set her browser to block any and all material coming from any domain name with the .xxx domain name extension. Sure you still have all the .com, .org, .info porn floating around. The main focus here is that at least you are not creating a bigger problem.

This isn’t even the scary part yet though. This part of the News.com article got my attention as well:

A government report from a few years ago hints that the Bush administration could choose unilaterally to block .xxx from being added to the Internet’s master database of domains. The report notes that the Commerce Department has “reserved final policy control over the authoritative root server.”

Now I don’t care if you are President George Bush, John Kerry or Alfred E. Newman, but the idea of a government being able to control the Internet’s master database of domains is a scary thought indeed. So will this be discussed on the next edition of the Web Hosting Show? I’ll be there in full rant mode, ready to speak my mind.
