Welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. I am the voice behind the show, Mitch Keeler.

Here on the Web Hosting Show we like to break down the Web hosting world for both the Web hosts and Web hosting clients and make sense of it all. We translate the Web hosting news, we analyze the latest Web hosting topics. We give you help, we give you support, we give you everything you need to know about the wild and wacky world of Web hosting. That is it, plain and simple. If we have a little fun along the way, then so be it.

I’ve got to make a little apology this week. Last week I said durring the Web Hosting Web site of the week segment, the Web Host Magazine was, “just another ‘catch all’ Web hosting Web site“. I couldn’t have been more wrong. After that I talked to Ron Dunlap, one of the guys who runs things over there and he told me some of the Web site’s history. So I take that back, they are far from being just another Web site of any kind.

I’d also like to bring up that the Web Hosting Show won the Editors’ Choice Award over there at Web Host Magazine. Ron told me they wanted to do it last month, but I got bumped back to this month. So I want to thank them very much, and also thank you as well. This show is about you and for you.

Speaking of that idea, you want to know how to get onto the show?

You can E-mail me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com or you can send me a voice mail via my Skype name, mitchkeeler. Just send me your thoughts, feedback, questions, ideas or anything else that might cross your mind. If it has something to do with Web hosting, I want to hear about it.

If you want to make sure you get this podcast each and every week, make sure you subscribe to the RSS feed. You can also subscribe to the Web Hosting Show via iTunes, Odeo, Podnova, and any other place or directory you can find our show listed. That stuff too far over your head? Then just come check out WebHostingShow.com, click the link and you can play the show. You can also use the big “play” button on the side of the Web page as well.

Online Scams Prey on Katrina

Con artists have launched fake Web sites and are sending out spam emails to dupe people who believe they are donating their money to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. According to SANS Internet Storm Center’s Web site, Katrinahelp.com, Katrinarelief.com and Katrinacleanup.com are all suspected to be illegitimate sites.

Mitch’s Take: You have to be careful who you give your money to out there. There are dozens of folks out there that would like to take advantage of people in these types of situations. If you are looking for a list of real charities to give to, check out FEMA’s Web site.

BulkRegister Renewing Names for Victims

Business registrar BulkRegister announced on Friday that it is automatically renewing all domains set to expire through September 16, and those already expired, for members affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Mitch’s Take: This is one of the small problems that people really won’t think about till weeks or months from now. It is nice to see BulkRegister leading the charge on this one, but I would like to see EVERY domain name registrar out there today doing the same thing. These folks have lost enough, let us make sure they don’t lose their domain names as well.

Do you have some Web hosting news? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.

DirectNIC Stays Online During Katrina

I know there are probably plenty of Web hosts and Web hosting clients down in the thick of things, where the Hurricane hit the hardest. DirectNIC, a New Orleans-based domain name register, was hit hard as well. The interesting thing here is they have posted both a blog and a series of pictures from the event.

I feel like this is only the beginning of the stories we will hear from Web hosting folks in the path of this hurricane.

Intermedia.NET Offers Web Hosting and Email to Hurricane-Affected Businesses

I heard about this story, via The Hosting News.

Intermedia.NET, a leading e-mail host for small and mid-size businesses, has announced an offer of help to companies affected by Hurricane Katrina. Any organization whose e-mail systems were disrupted by the natural disaster may receive immediate assistance to bring them online again, plus free hosting for September and October. All setup fees will be waived, and there will be no further obligation after this period.

It will be important for businesses to keep their e-mail and web sites running, as they seek to continue operations as well as inform employees and customers of the latest news via the Internet. In addition to free hosting, Intermedia.NET is also offering a free fax service - New York area code numbers which automatically forward incoming faxes to recipients as email attachments. These three offers will help businesses to resume and continue operations.

This is yet another sign that shows that the Web hosting world is willing to help out in a big way.

Go Daddy gives $250,000 to help with Hurricane Katrina

As the last big Hurricane topic I have to cover this week, I’d like to share with you what the folks over at GoDaddy.com are doing. They have given $250,000 to help out with the Hurricane Katrina relief. On Bob Parson’s Blog he gives the reasons why they are helping, and gives a few tips on how you can do the same. The biggest point that he brings up is to beware of scams. If it doesn’t smell right, then it probably isn’t right.

Have a Hurricane Story to Tell?

Has your hosting company done something to help the people effected by Hurricane Katrina? Are you a Web hosting worker who lived through the diaster? I want to hear about it. From now till whenever it isn’t needed anymore I’d like to highlight a person or a company a week from the Web hosting industry that is helping out with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Over the course of the show I have already told you how so many companies have already helped out. If I get enough submissions, I’ll make it a weekly segment. I might even toss in the weekly totals from the Web Hosts Unite project. So if you have something to share, please E-mail me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you would like to hear me cover on the Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Every so often you just need a quick nugget of Web hosting knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own tech news and views Web site, where I tell you what I think about some of the new things coming out of the technology world.

What is your Web hosting company doing to help? If you are a Web host, what are you doing to help?

I had a feeling it was only a matter of time before the Web hosting industry had something to say about the recent Hurricane that hit the southern part of the country. Web Hosts Unite is the cause this time around and yes it is time to donate what you can to help the folks down there in the middle of it all.

The category four Hurricane Katrina left thousands of people in that region with no power, no water, no food and no homes. Now I am not asking you to give hundreds or thousands of dollars if you can’t afford it. What I am asking you to do is give what you can. Web host, midPhase Hosting donated $1,000, the Web Host Industry Review has pledged $500. The current total of money raised at the time of me recording this show is $2,035. Every little sum counts.

With as many Web hosts and hosting related Web sites out there, you would think with us all coming together we could make a difference. So go check out WebHostsUnite.com for more information on how you can help.

Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Web Site of the Week

The Web hosting Web site of the week is brought to you by Banners World. Banners World is the number one place to visit to get all your Web site graphics, banners and designs done.

This week’s Web hosting Web site of the week is cheap-hosting.com.ru.

This Web site is yet another good resource when it comes to looking for a Web hosting provider. The folks at cheap-hosting.com.ru break the wild and wacky world of hosting down for you by sections, and let you choose from those. They let you choose the Web hosting solution that is right for you. They also have a plethora of other hosting related services you can check into as well.

Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
