Podcast 34 - Young Web Hosts Get Bad Press, Mitch’s Birthday
I don’t know if I am the only one who has noticed this or not, but young folks in the Web hosting industry seem to get a lot of bad press. Is this right or wrong? I’ll let you know on this very podcast. It’s my birthday and I can record a podcast if I want to! The one and only voice of the Web hosting world is now on the air.

Running Time: 18 minutes | File Size: 4.33 MB
Hello and welcome to my big birthday party, the Web Hosting Show. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions. Who am I? Why I am the birthday boy in the flesh, Mitch Keeler. Yes, today is my birthday and I am now 23 years old. Instead of expecting birthday presents from you, I have one for you.
A Web Hosting Show listener, Peter, suggested that I check out Web-CP, found over at web-cp.net. Peter just happens to be the project manager for the project. It is yet another fine example of an open source Web hosting control panel. It looks very nice, so why don’t you go check it out and let Peter and the gang know what you think of it.
Want to get ahold of me just like Peter did? All you need to do is drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com. I am an easy guy to get ahold of and I promise you I won’t bite, even if you are into “that kind of thing”.
Web Hosting Headlines
The Web hosting news and headlines are brought to you by Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. The Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide is the place to go to get all the latest Web hosting news from around the globe.
AITDomains has spent the year developing a series of additional services that add value to an Internet staple. Since the beginning of summer, AITDomains.com has: Enacted a domain auction service with nearly 500 domains up for bids in less than a month, added more than 1,500 customers to its bulk registration program through pricing of $6.49 per domain year, developed a protected e-mail service with built in spam and virus protection and more.
Mitch’s Take: This just goes to show you that the domain name business is still a growing one, no mater how large the strangle hold GoDaddy holds over the domain name industry. I haven’t been a big fan of AIT in the past, but it sounds like they have a good business model here for the domain name world.
More Awards for Website Source
Website Source, Inc., previous winner of Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide’s coveted Editors’ Choice award and one of the highest Ecommerce review scores given by WebHostMagazine.com, has received three more awards for its web hosting services. In September, Website Source was a HostReview Top 10 Award winner in both the Budget Hosting and Fastest Growing Company categories, and in October, Website Source received a Top 10 hosting award from TopHosts.com.
Mitch’s Take: Hey I say good for them. Some of these awards and honors can look really good to the Web hosting clients out there who haven’t decided where to pay for their own Web hosting. So as one award winner to the next, congrats goes out to Website Source.
Omnis Chooses SiteGalore Website Builder
Omnis Network, the California based leading provider of domains and hosting services with over 180,000 user accounts across 200 countries has chosen Akmins SiteGalore the powerful do-it-yourself website builder to tap the fast growing small and medium enterprise website building market more effectively.
Mitch’s Take: Hey like I said last week, Akmins SiteGalore is one great solution when it comes to building a Web site. Usually I am the kind of guy who likes to get his hands dirty with HTML, but if I had the choice I’d let them do the work for me. They really provide a top notch service, and I am happy to see more Web hosts are coming to realize that.
Do you have some Web hosting news? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.
Web Hosting Tip of the Week
Every so often you just need a quick nugget of Web hosting knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own tech news and views Web site, where I tell you what I think about some of the new things coming out of the technology world.
Branding works. Now this tip could be for both the Web hosts and the Web hosting clients out there. Now I want you to answer me a question, if you saw a plain support Web site with one Web host and a “Project HELP: for your needs” support Web page with another host, which one would get your attention more? The more elaborate and branded Web page would right? For some of the more boring features you might cover with your company or Web site (no mater if you are a Web host or not) try to think of good keyword slogans or branding names you could use with them.
While branding can be good, you don’t want to over do it as well. Make sure you have a good balance of both excitement and information and you will be doing everything right in my book.
Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points
All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.
Young Web Hosters Get Bad Press
For the most part, if you have been around the Web hosting world you have heard about the Web hosting companies out there that are run by a younger generation. There are actually some teenagers out there running Web hosting businesses. Now there are two sides of this story, and I feel like only one side is getting attention.
There have been a lot of bad things said about Web hosting with somebody who is not out of high school yet. Some people say they are unexperienced. Other people say that they are not safe. While some of these worries are true, here on the Web Hosting Show I want to give everybody the benefit of the doubt.
If doing Web hosting with somebody who is still in their teens makes you a little nervous, then that is fine. Go with a bigger and more experienced company. I for one am happy to see these kids getting in on things. It goes to show me that the next generation of Web hosting gurus are going to be even more experienced and savvy in their later years.
Now true, it would be nice if Web hosts had to tell you before if they are under aged or not. I am afraid there just is not a governing power out there big enough to do that just yet. If you are under twenty and running a Web hosting business, I want to tell you something. Don’t fear your age! Tell folks about it. That way you have nothing to fear and nobody can say that your are being dishonest right from the start. Could some of these younger generation Web hosters give the old guys a run for their money? Maybe one of these days, somebody will.
My Experiences With Web Hosting Talk
A thread I started over at the Web Hosting Chat forums seems to be getting a lot of attention. I posted about my own bad experiences with the folks at Web Hosting Talk. For the most part I can say with a straight face that Web Hosting Talk is being run into the ground. Now I talked with the president of iNet Interactive, the company that owns Web Hosting Talk and I’ll give him credit. He’s a good guy and he listened to my suggestions. Web Hosting Talk is loosing the PR war because people have grown unhappy with the way they get treated there. Here in the south, we call that getting a little too big for your britches.
This has been a good thing for other forums out there though. Because Web Hosting Talk is failing some folks out there, other forums are able to take some of the mind share away from Web Hosting Talk. Places like Web Hosting Chat and Host Hideout are two good examples. A company should never be ignorant to their own mistakes. They should see the problem and then fix the problem. It is just that simple.
Video Tutorial - This Thursday!
On Thursday I’ll be uploading yet another Web hosting video tutorial. This time around I’ll be covering the differences between Web hosting account types. You have dedicated, reseller and virtual accounts out there. Do you know what each one of them is for? Most people do, but some do not.
I also want to make a special announcement to any Web hosts out there. I want you to feel free to point your clients and customers to my tutorials. This is a service I want to provide to the Web hosting industry for free, and the more people that get helped from it the better. Have any ideas of what I should cover on next month’s video? Let me know at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.
Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you would like to hear me cover on the Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.
Web Site Design Help, Support and Ideas
All of the Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.
This week’s Web site that needs some help is Aroundirectory.com.
The colors, fonts and all around design of the Web site is really beautiful. It all works well together and it doesn’t seem confusing at all. Very nice work in that department.
Now where I might make some suggestions is in the content area. Give me more content about who you are, what you do and why I should be going to you to get this information. At first glance, I’m not sure what the Web site is about. Even though it looks nice and loads quickly for me you always have to make sure you sell yourself in the content of the Web site as well. That tip could go for anybody out there with a Web site.
Other than content, the Web site looks nice and let me know how things go for you in the future.
Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you contact me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.
