ISPCON Fall 2005 To Feature New Area for Emerging Tech
ISPCON, the leading event for businesses delivering Internet-based services, applications, connectivity and web hosting, returned this fall with an invigorating crop of ground breaking solutions for the market to discover, discuss and deploy.
Mitch’s Take: There is a lot of exciting content coming out of ISPCON this year. If you want to know more about what is going on with the inside of things, make sure you check out ispcon.blogs.com. I’ve been talking to a few of the folks from the ISPCON show about maybe having a few audio exclusives right here on this very podcast from the conference as well.
FalconStor Launches PrimeVault Center To Provide Disaster Recovery
FalconStor Software, Inc., a leading developer of network storage software solutions, today announced the launch of PrimeVaultSM, its state-of-the-art data protection facility, which leverages FalconStors award-winning IPStor and VirtualTape Library technology to deliver advanced disaster recovery (DR) and data archiving services, as well as co-location hosting.
Mitch’s Take: This sounds like something right out of the future doesn’t it? As more natural and man made disasters happen, even the Web hosting world will have to come up with better ways of protecting itself. This sounds like a step in the right direction.
Peak 10 Named To The Inc 500 List Of America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies
Peak 10, the Southeast’s leading data center operator and managed services company, today was named to Inc. magazine’s annual Inc. 500 ranking of the fastest-growing private companies in the country. Peak 10 ranks number 69 on the list, and was top among companies in North Carolina, with a three year growth rate of 1,085 percent.
Mitch’s Take: I haven’t had a lot of personal experience with Peak 10, but I have always heard nice things about the company. Thanks to Web 2.0 and everything else going on, I think that Web hosting is far from reaching a day of decline.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week
Every so often you just need a quick nugget of Web hosting knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own tech news and views Web site, where I tell you what I think about some of the new things coming out of the technology world.
This week’s tip is about setup fees with your Web hosting accounts. Just about every Web hosting sales page has a part where it says that setup fees are free. That is a good thing right? Well just about every virtual hosting account on planet Earth has the same deal! Now for dedicated servers I could imagine it would be a big deal to mention there is no setup fees, but for a virtual hosting account?
The reason “free setup” is still mentioned is because it is one more thing on that long list of options that they can try to sell you on.
Think of it this way. Would you rather buy a turtleneck sweater or a sweater with free neck protection? That is marketing 101 folks, slap free in front of anything and you are bound to impress somebody.
Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

PSP Web Server
Who would have ever thought you could run a Web server from a Playstation Portable? I’ve got one and I have to say the thought has never crossed my mind. We have seen Web servers made from some odd things, but the PSP might be one of the oddest I’ve seen in a while.
The place you want to check out is PSPProject.net. They have a link to the PSP server itself as well as a plethora of information about the process itself. They also have a gallery section for all the screenshots of the PSP server.
Even if the idea is an oddity, it seems they are picking up some interest from the outside as well. I found this entry on the PSPProject.net Web site:
With all the press we have gotten for the PPSPS we actually managed to make some money. Some French start-up offered a price and being so broke as we are we had to accept. We are discussing terms on releasing parts of source but for a current version is a NO.
It will definitely be interesting to see what happens with this project in the future.
Web Hosting Payment Options
Over at Web Hosting Chat there is a thread going on right now about the best mode of payment Web hosts can use. So far it looks like PayPal is the winner. I never realized though how many payment processors there really are out there.
PayPal is in the lead because everybody and their grandmother has a PayPal account. It is quick and easy on both ends.
For credit card payment, 2checkout.com seems to be doing nicely. I have worked with 2checkout before in some of my previous hosting jobs and I have to say there isn’t much to complain about. No payment processor out there is perfect just yet, but there are a lot of options to choose from.
So if you are a Web host looking for a payment processor recommendation, I’d say PayPal and 2Checkout are two good solutions. If your a Web hosting client who’s not happy with the payment processing at your Web hosting company, you might suggest these two to your Web host to use.
This Week’s Thursday Special
This Thursday for your Web Hosting Show special I’ll be discussing my thoughts on and about Web server collocation. Is it good? Is it bad? Should Web hosts do it or should you stay away from it? I’ll hopefully answer any questions there are about there about it. So make sure you come back to check that out on Thursday via WebHostingShow.com.
Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you would like to hear me cover on the Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.
Web Site Design Help, Support and Ideas
All of the Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.
This week’s Web site that needs some help is XiHost.net.
Right off the bat we see another template design. Now there is nothing wrong with using templates, it just seems to take a little of the originality out of the picture. A Web hosting company these days needs to stand out it needs to do something different to separate itself from the rest of the crowd. Just falling in with the standard is not going to be making you a lot of money.
With that said, I do like the basic layout of the design. The flash at the top might be a ‘bit too much though. It doesn’t serve any purpose other than just being eye candy. You also need to make sure you have a site map or some other alternative navigation system just incase somebody doesn’t want or can’t view the flash. This is helpful when it comes to search engine spiders that crawl your Web site as well. They can’t see the links through the flash so you always want to leave them a backdoor so they and others can have another way to look at the Web site.
Other than that, I wish you the best of luck and I can’t wait to see what XiHost.net comes out with next.
Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you contact me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.
Web Hosting Web Site of the Week
The Web hosting Web site of the week is brought to you by Banners World. Banners World is the number one place to visit to get all your Web site graphics, banners and designs done.
The Web hosting Web site of the week is PHPDeveloper.org.
Ok, so this might not have much to do with the world of Web hosting, but don’t give up on me just yet. PHPDeveloper.org is a great resource. They have a great list of PHP tutorials covering everything from Simple XML Parsing to User Authentication from a MySQL database. Who knows, they might have a solution to a problem you have been having as well. So go check it out and let them know that the Web Hosting Show sent you there.
Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
