Other than my birthday, Halloween is my favorite day of the year. I’ve always loved the scary and unusual stuff that happens around this time of year. I love dressing up. I even love trick or treating. The only problem I run into is that not many people want to open their doors when you are dressed up like Dr. Frankenfurter from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Now do you want to know how you can get ahold of me? Just shoot me over an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com filled with your comments, suggestions, feedback and questions. I try to get them all answered as quickly as possible and who knows? I might even toss a few of them onto the next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Microsoft Hunts For “Zombie” Spammers
Microsoft is investigating 13 spam operations it believes sent millions of junk mail messages through a single PC that the Redmond, Wash.-based developer purposefully set up as a “zombie,” the company said Thursday.
Mitch’s Take: Having spammers on one of your servers is a true horror story for any Web host out there today. Most take sever action when it comes to spammers on servers. The bad news is that it is only most of them, and not all of them that do.
Tech Companies Form Open-Source Storage Organization
IBM, Cisco Systems, and seven other technology companies have announced that they will form an organization to develop open-source storage management software.
Mitch’s Take: Open source is always good news to hear no mater what industry you are working in. There really do need to be more options available when it comes to managing storage space, and hopefully this will be a step in the right direction.

A full-service provider of web hosting and consulting services, commonAcre revealed it’s affordable, feature-rich, hosting plans designed to make an online presence easy for both the business savvy and the family oriented individual looking to share his online holiday photo album.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week
Every so often you just need a quick nugget of Web hosting knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own tech news and views Web site, where I tell you what I think about some of the new things coming out of the technology world.
This week’s tip of the week is to make sure you always read all the fine print. I have heard a lot of stories this week from Web Hosting Show listeners about bad hosting experiences. The one thing that each one of these bad stories have in common is that if they would have read the fine print, they wouldn’t have happened.
It is sad to say that some Web hosting companies like to hide certain legalities about the hosting account somewhere on the terms of service or acceptable use policy in really tiny print that you can barely see. I know a lot of folks buy hosting without reading this information first as well. So if you want to prevent problems from happening right from the start, make sure you check and double check all the legal information and stipulations there are for your Web hosting account.
Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Google Base
Now I am not going to play the roll of Chicken Little here. For most of us in the Web hosting world, the sky isn’t falling just yet. I do have to say that the new Google Base does look a little scary as far as Web hosting alternatives out there go.
Could this be a small step for Google into the world of Web hosting? Even if it is, I don’t know if we have much to fear just yet. I mean, when Google entered the blogging realm with Blogger, it didn’t really take that over. There are still better and more reliable services out there. I have a feeling that this will probably be turned into another way I can learn about growing my hair or making parts of myself bigger. Google has done a piss-poor job at keeping spam off of Blogger, how are they going to do with this?
So is Google making their own Internet? Maybe. If history says anything about the subject though, it will be filled with the same crap, spam and junk this Internet has had for years.
Web Hosting Wars
Now I’ll take some time to update you from the battlefield of the Web hosting wars.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) said that it had reached an agreement to settle a longstanding legal dispute with VeriSign, operator of the .com and .net registries. These folks have been going at it for a long time. Here is what the WHIR had to say about it:
The settlement covers all legal disputes between the two parties. Foremost among these was the controversial Site Finder service VeriSign introduced in late 2003. With Site Finder, Internet users typing in addresses that did not exist were served Web pages suggesting where they could go rather than given error pages.
Critics argued the service was an abuse of power by VeriSign, since it received money from those who benefited from the traffic. VeriSign gave in to the pressure and suspended the service. It then counter-sued ICANN, alleging the organization was impeding its efforts to offer new services and generate revenue.
The second war this week that came to an end was between Level 3 and Cogent. Level 3 and Cogent Communications said that they had agreed to a new peering arrangement, ending a nearly month-long dispute. Hopefully now we don’t have to worry about them playing with turning the Internet on and off in some regions anymore. I said a few weeks ago the behavior of both companies seemed childish at best, and yeah… I still stick by those thoughts.

Web Hosting Web Site of the Week
The Web hosting Web site of the week is brought to you by Banners World. Banners World is the number one place to visit to get all your Web site graphics, banners and designs done.
This week I thought I’d mix the Web Hosting Web site of the week and the usual design help segment.
The Web hosting Web site of the week and the site that needs a little of our design help is Drift 2 Hosting.
Greg over at Drift 2 Hosting wanted me to take a look at the new look of the Web site since they just went through a redesign of the entire service. Since I’m a nice guy I thought I’d do my best to help him out.
From the first glance at the front page, I have to admit I can’t find much that is really wrong with the layout and design of the Web site. It looks very nice indeed. Now going into “nit picking” mode, I’ll say that the font positioning on the big graphic on the front page looks a little “off” in Firefox. It doesn’t seem to be lined up as it should be so parts are hard to read.
On some of the other pages, I’d like to see more than a sentence about the services that are provided there as well. You always need to balance a good design with good copy and content. Other than that, it is looking very nice and I can’t wait to see how far you go in the future!
Disagree with me? Find something else that is wrong with the Web site that I didn’t see? Just leave a comment on the show notes and I’ll be sure that Greg gets the message.
Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
