Hello and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions. I am your Web hosting guru dancing on a hot tin roof, Mitch Keeler.
I think the Web hosting industry should pay more attention to the whole Web 2.0 movement that is going on right now. If anybody could be helped by Web 2.0 it would be the Web hosting community. We are always looking for newer and better ways of getting feedback from folks, ranking ourselves and other things of that nature.
It has been a long time since I saw a new tool or Web site that was new, original and focus on the Web hosting world in general. Why hasn’t anything new, as far as innovations go, come out of the Web hosting world? You tell me.
Want to get my attention? Just shoot me over and E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to address them either offline or right here on this very podcast.

The First AJAX-based Site Builder: Drag Drop Site Creator
SQLFusion announced the release today of the first online site building application ever built with “AJAX” technology. This online web site builder, called Drag Drop Site Creator, is available at dragdropsitecreator.com. It is intended primarily for web hosting companies, which offer Drag Drop Site Creator as an additional service to their hosting customers.
Mitch’s Take: Well maybe I am a little quick to say nothing good has come out of the Web hosting world as far as innovations go. I had the folks at SQLFusion drop me an E-mail earlier this week asking me to take a look at the new Drag and Drop Site Creator and I have to say, I am really impressed. With tools like this getting better and better, Web site designers might soon be a think of the past!
Netfirms Celebrates Anniversary Of $4.95 Domain Names
Netfirms is celebrating the anniversary of its $4.95 domain names. Originally launched on November 16, 2004, the price has remained the markets lowest for the past 12 months, as listed on leading industry research website Netcraft. The low price has been extremely popular, leading to tens of thousands of domain sign ups.
Mitch’s Take: Let me be the first to wish Netfirms and the domain name plan they have a happy anniversary! It seems like the price cut has been working so far, so hopefully they won’t be cutting the program anytime soon.
Search giant Google announced this week that it had launched Google Base, a free online service that hosts searchable user-submitted content. The service is in beta testing and is available at base.google.com
Mitch’s Take: I talked about this one a few weeks ago here on the Web Hosting Show, so I’ll just mention a few things here. Maybe it is over my head, but I still don’t see what the exciting factors are about this new service. Don’t get me wrong, I like many of Google’s other services, but this.. this just doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to me.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week
Every so often you just need a quick nugget of Web hosting knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own tech news and views Web site, where I tell you what I think about some of the new things coming out of the technology world.
It seems like a lot of folks were happy with the domain name tool I featured on last week’s show, so I figured I’d go ahead and feature another one I found. This one goes into the Ajax/Web 2.0 category as well.
You can find it at ajaxwhois.com. What is it? Why it is another domain name lookup tool. Just type in the domain name you want, and it will do a real time search. The thing this one has over last week’s pick, is it isn’t limited to just .net or .com names.
The fun doesn’t stop there. You can also set it to do Whois searches on the fly. Just type in the domain name you want to find more information about. Another free, new and innovative domain name tool for you to use! Once again, I recommend you at least give it a shot at ajaxwhois.com.
Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.
Web Hosting Deals and Steals
The Web Hosting Show’s Hosting Deals and Steals are brought to you each and every week by AllHostingDeals.com. AllHostingDeals.com is your number one place to find Web hosting offers too good to be true.
This week’s hosting deal comes from Dot5Hosting.com. They are offering:
Cheap domain hosting with 1500 MB web space, 50 GB monthly transfer, unlimited POP3 e-mail accounts, $50 Overture credit, web based e-mail, PHP / CGI / MySQL and more. What is the price on this offer? How does $5.00 a month sound? Not too bad, right?
Have a Web hosting deal or offer that is too good to be true? E-mail me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll tell the folks about it on the next Web Hosting Show podcast.
Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points
All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.
Google Analytics
Speaking of new services coming from Google that I really love, there is Google Analytics. Now there are hundreds of stats Web sites and scripts you can put on your Web site and track your visitors with. What Google does that I haven’t seen done in a long time is they have put together a total package and they are giving it away. I’m telling you, this package blows away any other stats program you have used before. It is pretty, it is easy to read and understand.. and yes, it is free. I’ve put it on all three of my Web sites so I can track what folks are doing.
Have a Nice Day!
Have I ever told you about the story of me getting in trouble for telling folks to have a nice day? It happened when I was working in one of my previous Web hosting support jobs. I was told it was like me making fun of the customer. Confused? Yeah, it has been a few years and I am still confused as to why it is a bad thing. Do you tell your customers to have a nice day? If you are a Web hosting client, would you like to be told to have a nice day? I would say yes, but I guess even general niceness has to be taken with a grain of salt these days.
How to Shop for a Good Web Host
Over at the Web Hosting Chat forums, there is a nice thread started up by etechsupport with tips on how to choose a good Web host these days. I have to say I agree with most of what he said as well. Don’t fall for marketing tricks and go on a free trial are two of the tips I like the most that he mentions, but there are plenty more. Another tip I’d like to share that isn’t on the list, is ask the Web host you want to sign up with for a few domains they are currently hosting. See if you can test the speed of these Web sites. If they come up relatively quick, then you have a winner.
Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you would like to hear me cover on the Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.
Web Site Design Help, Support and Ideas
All of the Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.
This week’s Web site that needs some help is OnlyWebmaster.org.
Well once again we are looking at your general set of forums, nothing new there. It is time to pull out the old checklist of features you need to get over when putting a Web site out there.
1. Give me a logo that I can remember. Give me something that only you have, and automatically makes me think of your Web site. You need more branding. Make things your own, so you can better define yourself in a space that has many voices out there.
2. The color choices are nice. You always want to have colors that look well together, and don’t punch me in the eye with going overboard. A blue background with yellow text might have been cool a few years ago, but it isn’t exactly user friendly these days.
3. Define yourself better. Give me some text on the forums somewhere that tells me who you are, what you do and why you are the best at what you do. This could be said for any Web site out there today. You aren’t just putting something out on the Web, you are selling yourself and your ideas. Explain it to me in a way that is short enough to be readable but also remember to get your idea across to the people.
So it could use some better fine-tuning, but it is a nice start for OnlyWebmaster.org.
Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you contact me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.
