Last week I talked to you about picking the perfect domain name, now this week I am going to teach you how to shop for that domain name in the wide market of choices you have available. Before you even start shopping online, you need to stop and think. Let us say you already have your Web hosting for this domain. Now the first question you have to ask yourself is do you want to buy your domain name through your Web host or through a separate domain name register.

Now the advantages of buying a domain name with your Web hosting company is that all your eggs are in one basket. You can go to one place to manage both your Web hosting and your domains. Keeping track of your payments might be a little easier as well, since you are doing it all with one company.

Now the disadvantages of buying a domain name with your Web hosting company is, once again, all your eggs are in one basket. What if you end up, six months down the road, very unhappy with the entire experience? What if you really like a Web host’s hosting services but hate how they manage domain names? What if you want to cancel and move to another Web host? All of these might be a little harder to achieve or do if you are registering your domain name and your Web hosting with the same folks.

Which one is right, and which one is wrong? I’ll leave that much up to you. Some people like to have their eggs scrambled and others like to have fried eggs. It is all a matter of what is right for you.

If you are going to select a domain name register than is not your Web host, here are a few places to choose from:

GoDaddy.com

BlueRazor.com

Moniker.com

eNom.com

So now you know what questions you should keep in consideration when shopping for a domain name. Next Thursday I’ll be letting you know my thoughts on how to set up your domain name with your Web hosting account. What is the best ways, easiest ways, I’m just here to make your life with domain names better.

Great article. I also would like to add that DynaDot.com has been a good company to work with and they are not a reseller, but a registrar. I have been using them for over a year and no issues ever.

Also buying your domain from a host is asking for issues as stated. Having to transfer the domain or even having to come back to your former host to manage your domain is not what you most likely want to do when you leave them.
