Hello I am the Web hosting media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

This week’s show feels a little short to me. It isn’t my fault, it isn’t your fault. There just wasn’t much going on this week in the world of Web hosting. I’m not here to bore you with stories about my summer vacation, I’m here to deliver you the goods. Even if it is short, I have for you the best of the best this week, as far as Web hosting goes.

For those of you who might be new to the show, each week on this podcast, I cover the Web hosting industry from head to toe. We have news, we have talk, we have your questions answered. At the end of the day, can you really say that anybody else does it any better?

Want to get my attention? Just shoot me over and E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to address them either offline or right here on this very podcast.

Web Hosting Headlines

The Web hosting news and headlines are brought to you by Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. The Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide is the place to go to get all the latest Web hosting news from around the globe.

HostMySite.com Doubles Shared Hosting Resources

HostMySite.com, a leading Web hosting provider today announced they doubled the disk space and bandwidth included with shared Web hosting plans free of charge for customers. The increase is the first in a series of feature enhancements and product updates HostMySite.com has planned throughout the year.

Mitch’s Take: There is nothing at all wrong with getting double of what you paid for. As I said a few shows back, you aren’t going to see price drops in 2006, you are going to see hosting plans growing in size and shape. I wonder what else HostMySite.com has planned for the rest of 2006 though?

Cube Panel Unveils New Control Panel

Web hosting automation solution developer Biztology said on Friday that it had launched its new server control panel Cube Panel.

Mitch’s Take: It has been a while since I have heard about a new control panel out there in the market today. Not much is really happening as far as new features go, so I am excited to see what this Cube Panel will be bringing to the dance.

Flaw Found in Helm Control Panel

A vulnerability has been found in the Helm Web hosting control panel, according to a report by security organization Secunia. Helm is the flagship hosting automation solution of UK-based software developer WebHost Automation.

Mitch’s Take: According to the reports, input passed to the “txtEmailAddress” parameter in forgotPassword.asp isn’t properly sanitized before being returned to the user. It is also being said that this is a “less critical” security problem as well, but could then be exploited to carry out cross-site scripting attacks.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Every so often you just need a quick nugget of Web hosting knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own tech news and views Web site, where I tell you what I think about some of the new things coming out of the technology world.

This week’s Web hosting tip is all about Web hosting security. I’m not talking about how secure the servers are or SSL certificates or anything like that. That can be saved for a different podcast down the road. What I am talking about is what I would call “common sense” Web hosting security.

For Web hosting clients out there, how hard is it to get your Web host to make a change to your account? Do you have to give your name? Do you have to give a password? You might be annoyed sometimes with the hoops you have to jump through to get help. If those hoops aren’t there though, it makes it much easier for folks who want to pretend to be you to get access to your hosting account. If your not happy with how a Web host gets your information before they help you, let them know about it. Tell them you want a more secure Web hosting experience.

Now for Web hosts out there, are you doing all that you can do to secure things while talking to a customer? Are you getting passwords, user names, account numbers that only the Web hosting client should know? I would say that social engineering is one of the most overlooked Web hosting security problems out there today.

So how do you think you stack up? Do you think you or your Web host could stand up to a social engineering attack via somebody wanting to get your information? For your sake, I sure hope so. You don’t have to be a genius to get control of somebody’s Web hosting account. You just have to ask the right questions to the right Web host and eventually you’ll get the right answers.

Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Web Site of the Week

The Web hosting Web site of the week is brought to you by Banners World. Banners World is the number one place to visit to get all your Web site graphics, banners and designs done.

The Web hosting Web site of the week is Become Your Own Web Host in 75 Steps.

Now why come up with these 75 steps? Here is what the author of the post I found had to say about it:

One of the biggest issues involved with becoming a web publisher is the question of hosting. With an internet clogged with false hosting review sites, hosting companies trying to rip you off, and hosting companies run by 14 year olds, the majority of web publishers are at the mercy of random chance when it comes to finding a quality host.

So with that kind of situation looking you in the face, what do you do? You come up with 75 very specific steps to setting up your own server via 1 burnable CD-R, computer with at least a 4GB hard drive, a working ethernet card, and a network that uses DHC. Toss in some chewing gum and duct tape and you too can be a Web hosting Macgyver.

Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Hosting Winners and Losers

The Web hosting winners and losers for the week are brought to you by Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting. Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting is the best e-book out there covering the Web hosting world from head to toe.

This week’s winner of the week is AngelicHosts.com, a Christian Web hosting directory.

Now why did AngelicHosts.com make it into the winner’s circle this week? Well, I think these special services type of Web sites are one of the best directions to go. It gives you a gimmick or a twist to your services, and you are more likely to deliver your content to the folks that are looking for it.

This week’s biggest loser is ABC, yes the television network.

Why are they on the “naughty” list this week? Well, they have yet again turned down GoDaddy.com’s newest Super Bowl ad. Once again, I’ll say I’m totally tired of this story. What is really to look forward to? Bob Parsons says the ad will be “Go Daddy-esque.” What does that mean? It means it will probably involve Candice Michelle doing something hot, and a GoDaddy.com logo slapped across the bottom of the screen. If I want to watch Candice, I’ll just tune into the WWE on Monday nights. I just don’t see why I or any of you should have to care about all this mess.

Do you have a hot tip to share on who might be the next week’s winner or loser of the week? Make sure you drop me an E-mail and let me know about who they are and what they did.
