Podcast 52 – Web Hosting Innovation

Web hosting innovation, is there really such a thing? This week I’m going to take a look at the idea of Web hosting innovation and what Web hosts and hosting related companies are doing or not doing to acheive it. I demand more excitement, because the Web Hosting Show, podcast 52 is now on the air.

Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

Innovation is the name of the game this week. I am really growing tired of seeing the same stuff over and over again as far as hosting stories go. Where is the excitement? Where is the thing that makes me want to jump out of bed in the morning? Hopefully by the end of this show I’ll have that answered.

This Thursday on this week’s Web Hosting Show special, I’ll be taking a look at Site5’s new Flashback. What is it all about? Why do you need it? I’ll answer all those questions on Thursday.

Have something you want to tell me one on one? Just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to get back with you as soon as possible.

Web Hosting Headlines

The latest Web hosting news from around the globe is brought to you by the Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. Do you have some Web hosting news to share? Make sure you send it to me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

1&1 Internet Offering Free .info Domains

“We have long trumpeted out commitment to giving users every resource they need for an optimal Web presence, and this is simply another example of that approach,” said 1&1 Chairman Andreas Gauger. “As less .com domains are available, it is important to give people the flexibility and alternatives they need to still have the Web identity thats best for them. This offer will allow more small businesses and individuals alike to make their distinct mark on the Internet.”

Mitch’s Take: I say good for 1&1 for passing another deal onto their customer base. I don’t know too many folks who use the .info domain names, but hey.. maybe this will start something.

Peer 1 Network Increases Revenue 249 Percent

Peer 1 Network Enterprises, Inc, a leading provider of high-performance Internet infrastructure, released the financial report for the companys second quarter of fiscal year 2006, for the three months ended December 31, 2005. The results reflect the first full quarter of the company’s consolidated operations with the dedicated hosting assets acquired from Interland on September 2, 2005.

Mitch’s Take: I bet a lot of web hosting companies are wishing they could say they grew by this kind of a percent. The main reason for Peer 1’s growth is them getting the Interland assets.

Salery 1.1.0 Released

“When we started our web store as a side activity, we decided we didn’t want to spend additional time on it,” he continues, “but all existing software demanded additional time for installation and maintenance. It was quickly decided that we had to make our own web store software.”

Mitch’s Take: This is the first time I have heard about Salery, but I do have to say it does look like another good “store front” option. Hopefully now that this version is out, they can work on creating a little more buzz about themselves.

Winners and Losers

The winners and losers lineup is brought to you by the eBook Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting. Do you have an inside secret on who next week’s picks should be? Let me know at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

This week’s winner is internal news makinng the public relation rounds.

This week’s loser is real hosting news and innovation.

I read a lot of RSS news feeds on and about the Web hosting world. Why does it seem like 90% of the stuff that crosses my feed reader is crap? I really don’t care if some big company hired a new CEO or Web host number 344 added a new data center. Where is the interesting news that we can all get excited about? True innovation is what the Web hosting world is lacking. Hopefully, sometime soon, somebody will be able to come along and shake things up a ‘bit.

Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points

You pick the topics and I talk about them. All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Do you have a topic you’d like to hear me discuss? Just drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

What is the Hostingsphere?

No matter where you turn, you always seem to hear about the blogosphere. Those wacky A-list bloggers are always up to something. It is almost like a sitcom that you can’t turn off. What about the Web hosting world? I think the Web hosting industry is very much to itself. Web hosting people don’t like the normal crowd. They like to stick with their own, where they feel safe. I’d call this place the hostingsphere.

Where the blogosphere is ruled with opinions from many different walks of life, the hostingsphere is filled with press releases. You see another thing you have to realize about the hosting industry is we are behind in the times. If the blogosphere lives in the land of Web 2.0, then the hostingsphere is living on the Web 1.0 alpha. The hosting industry is the backbone of everything you see or hear about Online. It still confuses me that there isn’t more conversation going on about it. The hosting industry seems to be scared of the innovation of communication.

So what is going to change it? I don’t think it ever will be changed. The only thing that we can hope for is that a few more voices come out from the hosting industry that aren’t telling us about unlimited services or a server being upgraded.
