Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

Now before we get into the domain name stuff, I have something to tell you about. Last week I release (with the help of Lockergnome and Gada.be) a free Firefox eBook for all of you to enjoy. Along with that eBook, there comes another Web site as well. FirefoxFacts.com is the definitive guide when it comes to quick tips, tricks and extension reviews for everybody’s favorite alternative browser.

So make sure you go check out FirefoxFacts.com, pick up the free eBook and subscribe to the RSS feed there.

Now this show isn’t just about me plugging projects, it is about me helping you get a better understanding about the world of Web hosting and everything that surrounds it. For just this week I’m going to toss the rest of the show’s usual format to the wind and I’m going to answer a call for help I got from one of my listeners.

Have something you want to tell me one on one? Just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to get back with you as soon as possible.

Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points

You pick the topics and I talk about them. All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Do you have a topic you’d like to hear me discuss? Just drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

I love getting audio messages from the Web Hosting Show’s fans. It lets me know that there is somebody out there listening. I got this one a few days ago. For those of you not listening to the show, he wants me to review his Web site and give him a place to sell domain names. Lets cover the Web site first.

Web Site Review - TradingPhotos.com

Alright, the Web site in question is TradingPhotos.com. Right off the bat, I can say this is an excellent domain name. Now once I get it typed in and launched into my browser, I get a little concerned. The first thing I notice are all the ads.

The first thing you need to do is sell me on why I should be there. Give me an idea of who you are and what you do right on the main page. Right now the main text there says:

“Welcome to Tradingphotos.com (Pictures Of Live Events), this site is dedicated to capturing moments through the visual art of photography. Browse the collection and feel free to contact me with your comments. Happy viewing!!!!!”

I would re-write that to say:

“Capturing moments in digital photography is what TradingPhotos.com is all about. TradingPhotos was founded in blah blah blah to give people a look at live events through my eyes. Feel free to browse through the photos here and let me know what you think.”

You want the main focus of the Web site to stay on photos. Once you clean up the navigation a little ‘bit and drop some of the ads, I would say you have an excellent database of photos. The best part of the Web site for me was the photo of David Carradine. Now if you could get him to listen to the Web Hosting Show, I’d be your personal hosting guru for a long time.

Selling a Domain Name

Now the second question that was asked was about selling domain names. How do you do it? Where is the best place to do it?

Well one way would be to just ask around on forums and other places to see if anybody wants to buy a domain from you. Now this way might not return too many results, especially if you don’t know too many other folks who run Web sites.

If you find yourself in that basket, then you will want to find a domain name broker. A domain name broker will sit between you and the domain name buyer and make the deal. If you want some suggestions, just do a Google search for the term.

You might also want to look at domain name auctions as well. One that comes to mind right now is the one that Go Daddy runs, the Domain Name Aftermarket. See if you can get yourself listed there, and your domain will go to the highest bidder. It could go for $10 or it could go for $100. It all depends on how good of a domain name it is and what kind of market there is out there for that type of Web site.

Send Me A MessageSo there you have it, two questions answered and hopefully one more happy Web Hosting Show listener. If you’d like to send me your audio questions or comments, feel free to do so here. If your question or comment is good enough, I might even answer it right here on the show.
