Egos in Web Hosting – Podcast 58

There is no short supply of egos in the Web hosting industry, heck I might even have a little one. That in itself isn’t a bad thing. Just make sure that ego doesn’t burn any bridges or force your foot into your mouth. Nobody likes a Web host with toe breath. Speaking of egos, this is the number one Web hosting podcast out there today. Podcast 58 is now on the air.

Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

Now every so often, I like to explain what this show is about so that new folks coming into the fold know what is going on. This podcast is all about making the Web hosting industry better for everybody. Sometimes I’m addressing the Web hosts out there and sometimes I’m talking to the Web hosting clients out there.

Face that facts, Web hosting isn’t exactly clear and to the point. Sometimes it can get confusing. I started this show to cut through some of that jargon you read on a day to day basis to give you the real deal behind what is going on.

GoDaddy.com Donates $10K to Open Source Development Project

GoDaddy.com, the No. 1 registrar of domain names worldwide, recently donated $10,000 to the OpenSSH free secure server management tools project.

According to the company, OpenSSH has become a staple of all free Unix and Linux operating systems in the world. With a long history of security and quality, OpenSSH is the core component used by millions to log in and manage servers. SSH, or Secure Shell, is a service used to log into computers over a network and then execute commands on the remote machine and move files from one machine to another. The service encrypts connections, thus protecting the security of the host machines and the connection itself.

Mitch’s Take: Good for GoDaddy.com! There is no doubt in anybody’s mind that GoDaddy has enough cash to spread around to various projects. OpenSSH is one of the most important projects out there today. If you want any more information on OpenSSH, go check out OpenSSH.com.

Hosting Tips and Tricks

All of my hosting tips and tricks are brought to you by my blog, Mitchelaneous. Do you have a Web hosting tip or trick to share? If you do, send it to me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Well after our domain tools special last week I got an E-mail from Rodrigo about a whois search that I might have looked over. Allwhois.com deserves a spot, so now I am giving it one.

Allwhois, a free service provided by MarkMonitor, is the most complete whois service on the internet. It automatically locates the appropriate “whois” database server for a particular domain name, queries that database for information about that domain name, and returns all available data. In addition, a domain name availability check will also be performed, even if a particular domain extension doesn’t have a searchable whois database.

I agree with Rodrigo that this is one of the best whois searches out there for international domain names. Give ‘em a shot and see if you agree with us.

Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points

You pick the topics and I talk about them. All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Do you have a topic you’d like to hear me discuss? Just drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Keep Your Hosting Ego in Check

When you find yourself in a business where everybody is looking out for the best interest of themselves, you are bound to run into a few egos here and there. Everybody wants to be the best, and a lot of folks think they are the best, no matter what you have to say. Egos are a given in the Web hosting industry. What you need to do is keep it in check.

Now having a little ‘bit of an ego is a good thing. It shows that you have confidence in the brand you are building. If you show no backbone, then your customers aren’t going to want to stay with you for long.

Now where an ego becomes a problem is when you start trying to boss people outside of your hosting social circle around. Need an example?

I just got an E-mail the other day from a guy who read one of my roundup articles on control panels I did a few months back for Lockergnome. Apparently he noticed that his wasn’t included on the list and he was mad about it. Now the way he went about it was the wrong way. He started telling me that it was a “grave mistake” or something to that effect and demanded he get a link on that list.

Now I am here to tell you folks, your mother was right. You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Now how should he have put it?

1. State your issue in a professional manner.

2. Tell the person about your product.

3. Instead of demanding something, why not ask?

No matter if you are in Web hosting or you are selling lemonade on the corner, building relationships is a big part of your existence Online. You want to make friends with folks, you don’t want to make enemies. So if you feel like your ego is getting out of control, do us all a favor and have a big slice of humble pie.

Web Hosting 101

Web hosting 101 is brought to you by Banners World. Do you have any basic information about Web hosting to share? Are you a beginner with a question to ask? Let me know at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Time to take you back to the Web hosting classroom to talk to you about giving your customers the best support experience possible. Check out this article posted last week on Hosting Hoopla by my good friend Johnder Perez.

+ Hosting Hoopla – How to Provide Exceptional Service

Johnder has hit the nail on the head with this one. The major bases that you want to make sure you have covered are: live support, help desk, forums, toll free number, and E-mail. If you aren’t doing that, then you are missing out on a lot of business.

You want to give your customers the best service they have ever seen, so that they don’t have a wandering eye when a better Web host walks by. Give them everything they need and they will be with you for life. Fall down on your job, and you can say goodbye to them for good.
