Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

On today’s show I am going to give you the goods, like I always do. I wanted to focus a little on my new project though, Hosting Hoopla. Some of you might remember I launched it as a “web hosting blog” not too long ago. I have decided to drop that idea for one that I think the Web hosting industry hasn’t seen before. Hosting Hoopla is the industry’s first Online news and link aggregator. I’ll get into that a little later on though.

For those of you who may not know what this show is, let me do a little explanation. This show is for Web hosting clients and Web hosts to learn how to take advantage of the Web hosting world and make it work for you. There is a lot of confusing jargon and a lot of confusing topics in Web hosting today and I just try to make sense of it all for everybody. Just think of me as your Web hosting geek translator.

Have something you want to tell me one on one? Just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to get back with you as soon as possible.

Netfirms Publishes Web Hosting Guide

Web hosting company, Netfirms, Inc., has introduced a 40-page Web Hosting Reference Guide. The book is provided to new hosting customers as a starter guide and reference manual. Jason Matheson, Product Manager of Netfirms commented, “We’re proud to be able to give this valuable book for free to our customers.”

Mitch’s Take: It is nice to see Web hosting companies out there trying to reach out and help folks who don’t understand the industry. As I said in the beginning of this episode, that is what I try to do here as well. I tried to find a sample of this Web hosting reference guide, but couldn’t get my hands on one.

Not to be one to sound like the home shopping network, but I did publish a little Web hosting guide of my own. Anybody remember Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting? Yeah, I wrote that.

Web Hosting 101

Web hosting 101 is brought to you by Banners World. Do you have any basic information about Web hosting to share? Are you a beginner with a question to ask? Let me know at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

How well do you know about .htaccess? For those of you who might not know what it is or what it does, here is the dictionary definition:

.htaccess (Hypertext Access) is the default name of Apache’s directory-level configuration file. It provides the ability to customize configuration directives defined in the main configuration file. The configuration directives need to be in .htaccess context and the user needs appropriate permissions.

Translation? It is a file you can put stuff in to control how your hosting account works. Now putting one of these together usually takes a lot of time. Why? It is because you have to look to every corner of the Web to find what it is you want to put in there. Well, that was till I found the .htaccess generator.

+ .htaccess file generator

This thing has plenty of options for you to set and configure. When you are done, it spits a .htaccess file for you to upload to your Web hosting account. It could not get any easier than that.

Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points

You pick the topics and I talk about them. All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Do you have a topic you’d like to hear me discuss? Just drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

My Newest Project - Hosting Hoopla

So what is Hosting Hoopla? I have something I want you to do. I want you to visit a few Web hosting news Web sites and see how easy it is to navigate. I want you to find out how easy it is to skim over the latest hosting headlines and interesting links. The fact of the mater is that none of that is very easy to do.

That is where Hosting Hoopla comes into the picture. I wanted to create a resource (powered by RSS feeds) that could give folks exactly what they want. More Web hosting information. I have learned, by doing this show, that folks want new and different ways to get information.

Right now the Web site is broken into three parts. One section is dedicated to hosting headlines from inside the Web hosting industry. The second section is dedicated to hosting headlines and links from outside the hosting industry. The last section (that I just added a few days ago) is dedicated to coming the latest threads at a number of Web hosting forums.

The Web hosting industry isn’t well known for staying on top of the leading edge of technology. With the new Hosting Hoopla, I hope to give Web hosts and Web hosting clients a tool to keep themselves better informed about everything the Web hosting world has to offer.

What is planned for the future? Obviously there are a million and one directions this could go in. I will promise you that Hosting Hoopla will continue to evolve.

So go check out HostingHoopla.com and give me your feedback, thoughts, and suggestions for future resources you’d like to see highlighted.
