This Week’s Hosting News and Headlines - Podcast 63
I have searched far and wide, from one corner of the Internet to the next, looking for the best Web hosting related stories I could find. I figured, since you are here, I am here and we have nothing else better to do, we would discuss what they are and what they mean for the industry. We will cover all the latest Web hosting news and views, because the Web Hosting Show, podcast 63, is now on the air.

Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.
You know one thing that really gets to me sometimes. It is the fact that people outside of the hosting industry don’t realize how hard of a job it really is. Anybody who works from home is at a disadvantage when it comes to regular folks with regular jobs. Why? Everybody thinks, “Oh, well you work from home.. you must be able to do whatever you want!”. The reality is that working from home can sometimes be harder than working a nine to five job somewhere else. You have no boundaries between work and play and more often than not you spend more time working than you do playing.
Now that I got that off my chest, today I figured I would pluck some of the best hosting headlines I could find from Hosting Hoopla and tell you what they are and what they mean.
Have something you want to tell me one on one? Just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to get back with you as soon as possible.

DemoWolf Offers Customizable Tutorials
Web hosting demo developer DemoWolf announced on Thursday it is offering a new free customization option with all its tutorials. For no extra charge, customers can now choose to order their tutorials with custom colors for all text boxes within the tutorials, and have customized text styles within the intro and ending frames of all tutorials.
Mitch’s Take: Now for the longest time I didn’t even know that DemoWolf existed. I just figured that DemoDemo.com ruled this space with nearly no competition. With that said, it is nice to see that DemoWolf is trying a little harder to get themselves known and offering a great service as well. Who knows, I might even invest in some of these tutorials so I could offer them to you guys and gals, my listeners.
Webmail.us Signs 10,000 Businesses in Six Months
Webmail.us, a provider of email hosting services to small and geographically dispersed businesses, today announced that it experienced rapid growth during the past six months, adding 10,000 businesses to its email hosting system. The company says it reached this milestone on Wednesday, May 31st, and now hosts email for more than 20,000 businesses worldwide.
Mitch’s Take: I remember covering Webmail.us a few months ago, and I knew one thing was for sure. This company was going to go places. It seems like there is a lot of business in doing just E-mail hosting. It makes sense. More people have E-mail accounts than they have Web hosting accounts. Maybe more Web hosts should spin off and do a little dedicated E-mail hosting on the side?
Peak 10 Ready for Active Hurricane Season
Peak 10, a data center operator and managed services provider, announced yesterday a successful review of the company’s emergency management plan.
The company says that the review was designed to ensure that Peak 10 can provide its customers a secure facility and redundant infrastructure as well as weather and disaster recovery information before, during and after a hurricane or other natural disaster. It also updated its website to provide businesses information on affordable disaster recovery and business continuity solutions.
Mitch’s Take: Hurricane season started June 1st, so now is a good time for any coastal-based Web hosting companies to start making plans. Well, every Web host should have a plan no matter what time of the year it is. Disasters can happen any time of the year. From hurricanes to blackouts, there are a lot of different forces of nature that can bring a Web host to its knees.
Host Gator Offers Free Support
Web hosting provider HostGator announced on Friday it is offering PHP 5 and MySQL 5 support with all its shared hosting plans at no additional cost. “We get so many requests from our customers for PHP 5 and MySQL 5 that we felt compelled to make it available to them for no extra charge,” says Brent Oxley, president and founder of HostGator.
Mitch’s Take: Now this is the right way to run a Web hosting company. If your customers demand that you support a new service, then you support a new service. Putting the news to the side for right now, and focusing on the business model here, it is one that can not be looked down upon. I actually wish more Web hosts would listen to the customers they are providing support to. I think it would make the Web hosting industry just better.
CrystalTech Offers June Promotion
Web hosting provider CrystalTech launched a new sales promotion on Thursday that provides customers with two months of dedicated hosting for free. CrystalTech’s dedicated plans offer powerful hardware, sizeable amounts of bandwidth, Windows 2003 Standard, Microsoft IIS and multiple add-on options. Under the new promotion, CrystalTech is also offering $700 worth of software for free, including mail, statistics and FTP software.
Mitch’s Take: Two months of free dedicated hosting is nothing to sneeze at, that is for sure. The only problem is, once they get you hooked, then after those two months are up you are going to have to start paying. Now I am not saying that any Web host should give this stuff away for free for ever. This is how they get you hooked. Anybody looking to lay down a pretty penny for some good hosting though should give them a shot. It sounds like an excellent deal with all the trimmings.
