Myths About Dedicated Hosting Servers - Podcast 64
If you have ever done any serious server shopping, you have seen two words that you might not understand. Do you want a dedicated server that is “managed” or do you want one that is “unmanaged”? What really are the differences between the two? You know me, I’ll let you know (without the jargon) on this week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.
Now a lot of folks just think of what I do here as a weekly audio show. It is much more than that though. This is an audio archive of the past year and a half of Web hosting. It is much more than even that though. This is like an audio guide to the entire Web hosting industry. By now I have covered all the big topics, but the world of Web hosting is always changing - and I’ll do my best to stay on top of things.
Make sure you vote on this week’s poll question, “Should I add flash tutorials to WebHostingShow.com?”. I have been considering going to a place like DemoDemo or DemoWolf to add some cPanel or other Web hosting flash tutorials to the Web site. Good or bad idea? I’ll let you folks decide, and I’ll let you know my decession next week.
With that said, do you have something you want to tell me one on one? Just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to get back with you as soon as possible.
Web Hosting Headlines
The latest Web hosting news from around the globe is brought to you by the Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. Do you have some Web hosting news to share? Make sure you send it to me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.
Web hosting provider 1&1 Internet announced on Wednesday it is providing updated spam protection and its Map and Driving Directions product in its current set of Web hosting features.
Mitch’s Take: Hey, the more Web hosts can do to help fight in the war against spam and junk E-mails, the better. 1&1’s updated spam features include a whitelist, which automatically bypasses the spam filter, and a blacklist, which automatically moves specific emails to a spam folder. The list is derived from a global list of spammers that is constantly updated.
Personally, I really like Spam Assassin for filtering out spam mail. Might have to tackle that one a future episode of the Web Hosting Show.
Web Site Design Help
All of our Web site design help is brought to you by All Hosting Deals. Do you have a Web site layout that needs a little help? Send me a link at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.
When I’ve launched a new design for one of my Web sites, there is always one man I have to see so he can let me know his views on my designs. Unfortunately, due to my southern accent and bad speaking skills, I’ll never be able to actually say his real name. Thankfully though, he allows me to call him Kooshin.
Now that is where his Web site design firm comes into play. Kooshin Designs is a great place to get a Web site layout done for a cheaper price than you might pay at one of the big designer places. Here is a little text via the Web site, telling you how Kooshin Designs would describe themselves:
Kooshindesigns.com was made to give people -individuals or small business owners -all kinds of web solutions and everything they need to run a successful business online.
So go check out the portfolio and request a quote. Just make sure when you do, you let them know that the Web Hosting Show sent you there.

Dedicated Servers - Facts and Fiction!
I know not everybody has, but some of you have done a little dedicated server shopping. To many folks, dedicated servers might seem a little scary. Thinking about all that space and all that bandwidth at your fingertips is the good thing. The bad side comes in when you have to manage it all.
Some of the “terminology” is flawed as well. We have all seen Web hosts and data centers advertise unmanaged servers and managed servers. Common sense would tell you,”One is managed by the Web host and the other is not” but that isn’t always the case. At least not to the extreme that you are thinking.
When you get a dedicated server, no matter if it is managed or unmanaged, you should always have at least one team member that will know how to run, setup and use that said server. This will keep you up and running a little longer, because you don’t have to work with a middle man to get certain tasks done.
Now with managed servers, the Web host or data center you bought it from will handle a little more support than an unmanaged server. You will get somebody ready to answer your questions and help you with your tasks 24/7 (if you have found a good Web host, that is).
So with that said, you would probably think that an unmanaged server is just some Web host tossing you a box and saying, “Hey, have fun!”. You get your login information and server details, then they let you loose on it. Well, it isn’t really as much of a loner job as you might think.
As I said before, it is good to have somebody on the team who is skilled in running a server. You will receive less support than you would with a managed server, but you aren’t all by yourself just yet. Many hosting providers will help you with your unmanaged server. The thing to remember is don’t expect the same level of support you would get with a managed sever.
So as you can see, both sides have both good and bad points to them. Managed servers will cost a little more, but unmanaged servers will require you to know a little more about what you are doing. Which one should you pick? It really depends on your current company setup.
The thing to remember is to do your homework before you buy anything.
Winners and Losers
The winners and losers lineup is brought to you by the eBook Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting. Do you have an inside secret on who next week’s picks should be? Let me know at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.
Now where is the problem? On March 1, 2006 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) gave VeriSign the right to raise fees on .com domains by 7 percent annually. How that might not seem like much now, but how about a few years down the road? Now it looks like whole deal is going to Washington DC to get straightened out. Boo on VeriSign and ICANN for making the hosting industry and domain name business more confusing than ever.
DemoWolf made it into the news again this week by announcing that they were teaming up with BliksemHosting.com to provide free tutorials to the host in question. Also BliksemHosting.com customers will have access to reduced pricing on all other DemoWolf tutorials, with their own company logo branded in every tutorial. Good move by DemoWolf yet again to get a little more media attention and helping out a handful of the hosting clients out there.
