Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

Well it has been one week, so I figured I would let you know how the first Web Hosting Show poll question went. It looks like the votes are in, and people would really like to see my add flash tutorials to the WebHostingShow.com layout. Now I didn’t get as many people voting as I wanted, but I think I got a sample of what most of the folks are thinking out there.

I actually talked to the folks at DemoWolf a little earlier in the week, and there might be a way we can get this set up while giving you (the Web Hosting Show audience) a little perk as well. All I can say right now is stay tuned.

Have something you want to tell me one on one? Just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to get back with you as soon as possible.

Data center operator and managed hosting provider, Peak 10, announced an educational webinar on disaster recovery and business continuity, that it will host online June 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m.

The free web seminar will help businesses protect and preserve critical data from hurricanes and meet regulatory compliance. The event will offer disaster recovery expertise, best practices, real world lessons and business continuity solutions on the subject.

For more information or to register for the free disaster recovery webinar on June 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m., visit this link:

Mitch’s Take: You know me, I love the free stuff! I think it was just a week or two ago we were talking about disaster recovery and making plans for hurricane season, and many of you E-mailed me and said you didn’t know what to do to get ready. Well, here is at least one way you can get yourself informed about disaster recovery. I might even tune in myself, so I can better answer some of your questions about it.

Moving Your Web Site from Web Host to Web Host

None of us like the idea of having to move our entire Web site from one Web host to a better Web host, but we have to face that facts that this day might come sooner or later. Just like with anything, it is always good to be prepared before you decide to make the jump.

One important thing to remember is that you want to give yourself plenty of time for the move. This shouldn’t be something you decide you’ll do over a weekend, and then you are done with it. The first thing you will need to do is secure your new Web hosting account with the new Web host. That way everything should be ready to get moved over to there.

Next you will want to backup your current Web site. Now depending on what or how you manage your Web site, this could be a very difficult job or a very easy one. I will not get into all the details right now, lets just make sure that you have a full backup on your own computer.

Now you need to put that backup on your new Web hosting account. This step can also be different, depending on what type of content management system you are using. To make things simple, lets just say you need to upload everything to your new Web hosting space.

Now that all your files are on the new Web hosting account, you need to go to your domain name register and change your DNS settings so that your domain name now points at the new Web hosting account, and not the old one. Now it could take around two or three days before your domain name starts to point to your new hosting account. Just wait it out, and then when it is working, you are ready for the last step.

The final thing you should do is cancel your old Web hosting account. Now that everything is working with the new Web hosting account, you don’t need the old one anymore. Contact the billing team with your old Web host and let them know you want to cancel. This could take a few days as well for it to process through to the actual billing team. Once it does though, you should be home free with your new Web host and ready to get back to work on your Web site.

Now one thing you might want to look into is having your new Web host move your Web site for you. This is sometimes possible, but only if your old Web host is willing to give them access to your old account so they can set up the “hookup” between the servers and move the data. I would ask about it with your new and old host, but if you can’t get it working, I wouldn’t get too worked up about it.

Do you have any Web site moving tips? If you do, send them my way at mitch@mitchkeeler.com or send me an audio message via Odeo.

Hosting Tips and Tricks

All of my hosting tips and tricks are brought to you by my blog, Mitchelaneous. Do you have a Web hosting tip or trick to share? If you do, send it to me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

This has been one jam packed show, and I’m not even done yet. I have one more tasty tool for you to check out in this week’s Tips and Tricks segment. Now shopping for a domain name isn’t always so simple. You need to find a good domain name register, and you need to find a domain name that isn’t taken yet. Well, that is where Instant Domain Search comes into play.

InstantDomainSearch.com gives you live results to your domain lookups. Just start typing in the domain name you want, and they will tell you if it is taken or not via the .com, .net or .org domain name extensions. They also give you a list of domain name registers that you can choose from as well.

Go check them out at InstantDomainSearch.com and when you do, make sure you let them know that the Web Hosting Show sent you there.
