Hello and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the number one Web hosting podcast out there today and the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. The other day over at TechRepublic.com I was reading about a series of photos they published about what not to do in a server room. I thought the cord setup under my computer here was bad till I viewed some of these photos. Not all are disaster photos of cables gone wild though. So with that said, I figured I might ask my listeners out there if they have or know of any more oddball server photos like this? If you do send ‘em in to me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll see if I can find a reason to work them into a future show.
For those of you who are new to this audio expedition through the wild and wacky world of Web hosting I want to explain a little ‘bit about what this show is all about. Around a year and a half ago I started this Web hosting podcast for both the Web hosts and the Web hosting clients out there in the world today.
Think of it as the place where the two parts of the hosting industry merge and everything makes sense. If you want to check out any other shows or stay in the loop about future episodes go check out WebHostingShow.com.

After 5 Years In Development, Site5 Begins Selling Domain Names
In a move that is being heralded as “so 1999 of them,” Site5 Internet Solutions (www.site5.com) announced today that it would finally begin selling domain names. “We decided that since the profit margins on domain names have been all but eliminated with companies going so far as to give them away that it was a market we couldn’t afford to pass up,” said Site5 Co-Founder and CEO Matt Lightner.
Mitch’s Thoughts: Now like they say later on in the story, buying a domain name is nothing new. They are not re-inventing the wheel here. They are doing what many Web hosts are doing, offering an easier setup process for the Web hosting customers out there. Now I am usually against having all your eggs in one basket and having your web hosting and domain names all at the same place. The reason I don’t like it is I want to be able to get out as soon as possible if a place isn’t suiting my needs.
With that said though, doing everything at one spot seems a lot easier for folks new to the whole idea of getting a Web site set up. So there is your tip for the Web hosts out there looking to make a little more of the green stuff.

Backordering Domain Names – Should You?
I got an E-mail the other day from a Web Hosting Show fan named Adam:
Hi Mitch and thanks for the informative and entertaining podcast. I’m wondering if you could share your insights on backordering a domain name? What are the best ways to maximize one’s chances? Thanks in advance for your help.
Now we find ourselves back at where we were at the beginning of this podcast. Now for those of you who might not know what backordering domain names is, let me give you a quick example.
Tom wants to buy HostingHoopla.com, but Tom doesn’t own the domain name. It is already taken by me. Now lets say that Tom backordered HostingHoopla.com. As soon as my domain name registration is up, and I don’t renew, then Tom is first in line to get the domain name HostingHoopla.com.
As I said before, I don’t like tossing my money into something without seeing instant results. That is something you are not going to get with domain name backordering. It could be weeks, months or years before that domain name you backordered is available.
So here is what I finally told Adam as my answer. I say if it is a domain your really want, then stick with it and backorder it. If you can do without it, then I wouldn’t bother with the trouble.

Web Hosting Site of the Week
The Web Hosting Site of the Week is brought to you by Ping! Zine. Go check them out and subscribe to the free magazine at PingZine.com.
This week’s pick for Web hosting site of the week is WebHostingShow.com.
Now I know some people don’t like all my “inside baseball” talk about how this show is run, but I’m going to talk about it anyways because I have been getting a lot of people asking me lately about podcasting, how to do it and how I get it done. I recently moved WebHostingShow.com over to WordPress and I couldn’t be happier. It gives me a lot more control over the backend than I had before. Putting out these podcasts will become a lot easier and quicker and they makes the world better for all of us.
Right now I am still adding flash players to all the archive Web pages, but I should be done with that pretty soon. It is still hard work to go through a year and a half of data an making sure everything is just right. So what are your thoughts about the new Web site? I want you to send them in to me on our new Contact the Show form right on the Web site. All in all, I would have to say I like it and I hope you do to.
