Hello, I am that said rock star of the Web hosting industry, and I want to welcome you to the number one Web hosting podcast out there today, the Web Hosting Show. This week’s show is being brought to you by WebHostingChat.com, TopHosts.com and the letter “E” for entertainment. Now before you start saying, “Entertainment? What is that guy doing with his hosting servers?” don’t run or hide. I can promise you nothing perverted here - just clean wholesome Web hosting fun.
Amy Armitage of Lunarpages.com sent me an E-mail last week wanting to know if I would give Lunarpages’s new audio ad a little play time on this show. Now I might not just give free press to anybody, but Amy has been a good friend of this show and has given me a lot of good feedback - so I am happy to help.
I told her I wouldn’t just play an ad. I told her I would give my audience the world debut of Lunarpages new audio advertisement. You see, when it comes to publicity and marketing yourself out there - you can’t overlook the ease of making something look better by just adding a few keywords here and there.
So, before I get into this week’s Web hosting headline lets’ check it out.
Hosting Headline
After shuffling through all the news of the week, this was the best headline I could find.
Web Host PEER 1 Announces Management Change
PEER 1 Network Enterprises, Inc is pleased to announce that Fabio Banducci, the company’s Executive Vice President, has been promoted to the position of President. To make way for this promotion, Lance Tracey has resigned as President, but he continues as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.
Ah yes, news from another big juggernaut of the Web hosting industry. Why should you care what PEER 1 is going internally? Well, since they are one of the biggest dogs in the fight. You see, here is your next publicity tip.
You always want to keep an eye on what the competition is doing out there. No matter if it is the Web host next door or the biggest one of them all. Also, if you haven’t done so before - you might look into sending out a few press releases of your own out to some of these big Web hosting news sites.

Hot Topic in Hosting
This week’s Hot Topic in Hosting is about something that really gets on my nerves. It also ties into the show’s theme today about getting more publicity and press for yourself. I hate Web hosts that spam my blogs (and others) with messages about how great they are. Doing trackback spam or comment spam is not the way to get noticed Online today. It is actually my number one tip for just making the public even more mad at you.
I have considered the idea of making a “blacklist” of Web hosts who have spammed me, but I haven’t done it just yet. I just keep waiting for the day for it to stop. These days, any sort of spam isn’t getting noticed like it used to. Unless you do it on dead blogs, you are more than likely just going to have your hard work deleted.
There are plenty of ways to get attention other than doing these forms of spam, some of them would be:
- Send out press releases about your new Web hosting announcements!
- Join some Web hosting forums and talk about your brand there!
- Exchange links with the plethora of hosting resources out there!
The list really goes on and on. So, as my last attempt to reach those out there who have been doing this crap, there is only one thing left to say. Please don’t do it anymore!
Question of the Week
After last week’s Labor Day Q and A edition of the Web Hosting Show, I got more than a few questions sent my way. As always, I’ll do my best to get everybody answered. Here is one that really got my attention though.
Hi Mitch, I listen to you weekly and love your show. I have another question for you. Why should I buy my dedicated server space through a Web host if I could just cut them out and go to the data center directly? Thanks! - Robert
Well Robert, you might be right! It might be a little cheaper to go directly to the data center and leave the Web host out in the cold. Now the reason I wouldn’t do that is you would be missing out on the support and help you could be getting from the Web host.
I would say if you know enough about servers that you think you don’t need a Web host in the way, then go for it. If you still need somebody to hold your hand and help you out, then go through the Web host to get the dedicated hosting server. Hope that helps!
Web Hosting Site of the Week
This week’s Web hosting site of the week is another one that I wouldn’t have known about if it wasn’t for somebody E-mailing me about it. Have you heard about the Webmaster Jam Session? This gathering of smart Web folks promises to be informative and fun. Some of the speakers include:

+ Derek Featherstone
+ Nick Longo
+ Ethan Marcotte
+ Jared Spool
+ John Moore
+ Scott Fegette
Also, we shouldn’t forget the Web hosting industry’s own Amy Armitage, the MissChief of Marketing, Sales and Business Development for Lunarpages Web Hosting. The event will be held September 22 and 23 in Dallas, Texas. Also, you might want to sign up quick, because the admission is free for the first 1,000 signups who book a hotel room.
