Hello and welcome to the one and only place you can get a boy from the south to talk about data centers and hosting news the Web Hosting Show. I am that said country bumpkin Mitch Keeler, and like every week before it this podcast is brought to you by the fine folks at WebHostingChat.com.
Now becoming excited about a Web site that is based around the world of Web hosting is not exactly exciting. As much as I would like it to be - some places are just way too vanilla for my taste. Every so often though, you find a rocky road adventure with a marshmallow swirl that you just have to check out and visit over and over again. The project that has me so excited this time around is GeeksGather.com.
The folks at MediaLayer have put together another great resource, that much is for sure. This Web site is focused on and aimed at small and medium sized Web hosting companies - giving them an Online publication to check out, read and learn from. There are articles, interviews, columns, downloads and more for you to check out.
The Web site just launched not too long ago, so things might look a little new. Once time has gotten the Web site settled in though, I look at it to be one of the best new resources for the year of 2006.
Now let’s take a look at the two latest hosting headlines of the week.
Web Hosting News and Views
Web Hosting to be Featured at ISPCON 2006
ISPCON Fall 2006 will be held from November 7th - 9th, 2006 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California. This year’s conference will include many industry luminaries and outstanding keynote presentations. Additionally, this year ISPCON will feature a separate “hosting” track that will address the needs of small businesses seeking web hosting and professional webmasters who interact with web hosts on a regular basis.
Now what is my take on this? Well ISPCON has always had a little ‘bit of Web hosting in it, but I am happy to see them making a little bigger of a deal out of it this year. I’ve spoken with some of the folks behind the scenes there and they promise that this year’s event should be even better than last years. It might be a little too late to get there yourself, but I am sure the Web hosting news sites will have plenty on the news coming from the event in the next few days.
Web Host Lunarpages Announces Increases
Lunarpages Web Hosting announced significant increases to the storage space and data transfer on their Business and Basic plans. The Basic Plan now features 35 gigabytes of storage and 800 gigabytes of data transfer. The Business Plan now maintains 50 Gigabytes of storage and 1 terabyte of data transfer. Lunarpages Executives also have a clear message to send their competitors.
This is great news for anybody who is hosting with Lunarpages or is looking to find a new Web host, but I think the more interesting point of this came later on in the story. A good friend of this podcast and Lunarpages Business Development and Marketing Manager Amy Armitage said.
Honestly, do our shared customers need all of this extra bandwidth and space? Will they even use it? I doubt it. Lately, checking out hosting review sites and offerings of other hosts I’m incredibly concerned about the credibility of the industry as a whole.
I think she is right on the money with this statement. While Lunarpages has the power and money to make these said improvements, a lot of other Web hosts are promising what they can not deliver. Personally I don’t think places like this are going to change. Instead it will be upto Web hosting resources (like this one) to straighten out all the jargon that gets tossed around to Web hosting customers.
Web Hosting Web Sites of the Week
Speaking good friends of the Web Hosting Show, the folks over at the Web Hosting Magazine and Buyer’s Guide have recently updated their editors choice awards. Here are the winners for this month.
For the best industry related product we have the book Getting Real. The book, Getting Real, details some of the lesser known truths about building, designing, and implementing the core strategies needed to get an application produced from start to finish.
For the best industry related service we have OpenDNS.com. OpenDNS is an interesting concept in managing DNS records. Using a large caching scheme, OpenDNS is able to make Web sites load faster on your browser. OpenDNS also is able to fix common errors when you type in a URL, and it points you to the right URL.
Winning the award for Web hosting services is ServInt. ServInt offers high grade VPS, Dedicated, and Enterprise Hosting. Started in 1995, ServInt has been in operation for 11 years and hosts thousands in more than sixty countries across the globe. Great pricing, excellent hardware, and professional support are the basic building blocks that ServInt builds their hosting solutions on, and their VPS Hosting plans are no exception.

Web Hosting Q and A
Since we have a few extra minutes to spare this week I figured I would open up the old Web Hosting Show mail bag and answer some of your questions on the air. This first one comes from Mike C.
I love listening to your show each week. I was wanting to know if there was an easy way I can get a Web site built Online without knowing about designing web sites. I want an easy way on the web to get published.
Well Mike, there are several ways you can go with this. You could check out Google Apps for Your Domain for one. This will allow you to use Google’s page builder for your own domain. Another resource you should keep an eye on is Weebly.com. Although it isn’t public just yet - it promises to make Web site building really easy. This would be the perfect project for a large Web hosting company to get behind, because it would make publishing as easy as filling in the blanks.
Our next question comes from Jon. Jon says.
I read a few months ago where some people were searching for domains and after they did a company bought them before they could buy them. How can I keep this from happening to me?
Jon, I am afraid I don’t have a good answer for you because I really don’t know for sure if any domain name register will do this or not. They could do it - but it seems a little tricky and wrong in my opinion. The best advice I can give you is stick with domain name registers that you know and trust. Before you start domain name searching, you might search Online and make sure that this company hasn’t had an history with doing that. Good luck - and let me know when your new Web site is setup, I would love to check it out.
