Want Exposure? Come Talk to Me!

Black Server.jpgAs you have probably figured out by now, I took this week off from doing the podcast due to a few reasons, with the biggest one being time. I thought now would be a good time though to toss out the offer to all of you to come talk with me.

You have heard me interview folks like George Roberts (from Hostingcon), Amy Armitage (from Lunarpages) and Troy Augustine (from Web Hosting Talk) – now it is your turn to share your thoughts about you, your product or about the hosting world in general.

Companies that have services based around the web hosting or web development worlds are more than welcome to participate too. If I have tickled your fancy, feel free to drop me an e-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com (put “Interview Request” in the subject line) and I will be more than happy to discuss things further with you.

Opening the Hosting Mail Bag

Ask Me About Web Hosting!Every time I get an e-mail with a hosting question in it, I do my best to get it answered for the folks that ask me stuff. I don’t get paid for it – but hey, I’m a guy who likes to help out where I can. Here are some of the best random questions on and about web hosting that I’ve been asked about this week.

Question – You’ve talked about a lot of file backup web hosting solutions here lately. I have been doing all of my off site backup storage with Carbonite. Do you like them as a choice?

Answer – Yes, the folks at Carbonite do a really good job and the whole online backup solution. Now the reason you might want to go with a solution like this instead of just backing it up to DVD or external hard drive is simple. What if you house explodes, or an army of un-dead midget warriors attack? Your computer would more than likely bite the dust. With your files backup somewhere else though – at least your files will make it out alive.

Question – I want to get into the web site business. Is it better to host a web site with a lot of topics on one domain name or setup different domain names for each topic?

Answer – I would say try to find a niche domain name for each type of web site you wish to host. The “all in one” web sites are really hard to manage and make popular. People want to learn about or deal with places that are based around one topic of discussion.

Question – Why does my server web statistics not match up with my online web statistics when tracking my visitors?

Answer – When using something like Webalizer compared with Google Analytics, the server side solution is going to be looking at everything, robot crawls, people and more as all one thing – traffic. With a off-site web stats solution like Google Analytics, it can’t see (or gain access to) that information, so it’s tracking numbers are based more off of real people.

Do you have a question? Feel free to send it my way and I’ll do my best to help you out too! Who knows, your question might even make it to the podcast too.

Get Your Blog Backed Up

Related Podcast Link: Listen to Episode 118!

Backup Your ArchivesThere are a lot of blogs out there, many more than you could count on your hands.. even if you have that freaky four extra fingers on that left hand of yours.

With that many blogs out there, there is a lot of backing up that needs to be done. BlogBackupOnline.com will do it for you.

You’ll hear no argument from me that backing up a blog can be very complicated and tedious. Having an external hosting account to do this on can be a lifesaver. At this time they support these blogging platforms:

  • Blogger
  • WordPress
  • TypePad
  • Friendster
  • LiveJournal
  • Serendipity
  • Windows Live Space
  • Movable Type
  • Terapad
  • Vox

They also provide a restore solution as well. With many of these online backup solutions they have an easy way to upload, but not such an easy job downloading what you’ve backed up. I’m happy to see they have this under control as well.

Backing up your blog is free while they are still in Beta. The bottom line is the storage space though. You get 50 MB of storage space is allocated to your account.

Green Hosting Smells Funny

Related Podcast Link: Listen to Episode 118!

Eco-Friendly HostingOne of the newest buzzes I keep hearing about in web hosting circles lately is “green hosting”. No, that is not what happens when you leave your hosting out in the sun too long.

A green web host is one that claims they are doing good things for the environment – or something to that effect.

What are Carbon Credits?

The way I understand it these are credits that companies can buy so they can say they are “green”. That would be the simple way of doing things. This way instead of having to make any real changes – they just buy a few of these, equal to how much pollution they put out – and they can say they a “environmentally friendly” company. To me, the logic behind that sounds a little screwy.

Who Are Real Green Hosts?

The whole buying credits so you don’t have to do anything sounds a little wrong to me. So what would make a real green host in my opinion? I would say a web host that makes real changes to the way they do business. They could turn off their monitors after an hour of not being used. They could use more energy efficient servers. There are a lot of ways you can save energy and cause less pollution.

There are even a few web hosts out there that say they run off wind, water or solar energy. I won’t name any names because I have yet to see some real proof of it, but that is another idea out there as well.

So when it is all said and done, I think you need to ask for proof and examples if your really considering going with a “greener” hosting option. There is nothing wrong with helping the environment, but there are a lot of companies using it as more sales jargon than an actual practice.

Web Hosting Wiki

Related Podcast Link: Listen to Episode 117!

Hosting WikiBack on episode 111 of the Web Hosting Show the man in charge over at iNet Interactive Troy Augustine teased on this very podcast that there would soon be a web hosting wiki released by the Web Hosting Talk team. It looks like it was released early last week.

Where can you find it? Just type in WebHostingTalk.com/wiki into your browser and you will be on your way. At first glance it is kind of hard to figure out what exactly it is there for and how to use it – but once you dive in you can see there is a plethora of information to be had.

Ever been confused about a certain hosting term or concept? Worry no longer. Just search for it here and you will get a pretty good definition of what it is all about. As time goes by and more users participate I am sure this will grow into a very valuable resource. On the about page, it is pitched as a place where “the hosting industry can tell its on going story”. So one can think that more information such as company profiles, history of the business and more will be added over time.

Web Hosting Wiki in Action

Many of you out there might be wondering, what exactly is a wiki? Well it is a web site or online resource which allows users to add and edit content collectively. Will this wiki spawn off more hosting industry bigwigs wanting to create their own wikis on web hosting? Maybe so. Hopefully though one of them will come out as the leader of the pack. If anybody can create that type of resource, the folks behind Web Hosting Talk can.

Web Hosting Show is Breaking Records

Related Podcast Link: Listen to Episode 117!

Web DevelopmentNow I know not many people like the blogs or podcast on the blogs or podcasts. Talking about yourself talking about yourself can get a little confusing for some and a little boring for others. I just have a little ‘bit of news to share.

Here recently, within the last few weeks it seems that the listener base for the Web Hosting Show podcast has grown by leaps and bounds. Where we were getting the average download rate of 500 or so a week – you are now doing three times as much listening. At the time of writing this, last week’s podcast in the span of seven days had been downloaded 1,600 times. That’s a big mile stone for me and should be for you as well.

I think a big part of it has to do with the new flash player that I embeded on the WebHostingShow.com layout. This makes it easier than ever to listen to the show right there on the web site.

Now other podcasts or big-wigs in the hosting industry might laugh a little at that number. Sure, I’m not exactly the Ted Turner of web hosting yet and I’m not sure I’d ever want to be. I’m happy being your “web hosting industry media rock star” a guy that has a fun weekend hobby that people enjoy.

Feel free to continue spreading the word though on and about this show. Every mention, link and listen is appreciated.

Unlimited Stoarage at Allmydata.com

Related Podcast Link: Listen to Episode 117!

Backing up is hard to do – no wait, that was breaking up. Backing up is not that hard to do but for some reason we still do not like to take the time to do it. That is where cheap Online solutions come into play. One of those solutions out there for you right now is Allmydata.com.

All My Data Hosting Backup

Here is a little more information about the company and team from their about us web page.

Allmydata was created for all of us who have lost important information due to disk crashes, viruses or even a mere computer replacement. Allmydata was created for all of us who have given up on backing up our computers due to the cost and complexity of current backup solutions: external drives, tape drives and complicated online solutions.

Allmydata promises you “unlimited online storage and backup” but what is the price? All you have to pay is $4.99 a month. That’s a pretty good deal in my book. They also offer a Windows only desktop application to make your backing up a little easier to do as well. Overall it looks like a great way for anybody to keep their important files backed up just in case the worst might happen.
