Unitied Union of Web Hosts?
I pledge allegiance to the web hosts of the.. no wait, that just does not have a good ring to it.
I don’t know if you have been keeping up with this buzz, so let me get you caught up. Paul Hirsch over at the WHIR Blogs thinks that the web hosting industry needs a governing body.
Now since his first post, the phrase “governing body” has been back tracked some - but the idea is still out there.
Should there be such a group formed?
Now looking at the happy rainbow and cute kitten view of things, this sounds like a great idea. Creating a union of web hosts that all share the same aspirations and views and that all want to better the industry and its standings in the world market.
We would be giving the web hosting industry a solid and true voice out there to speak from - and the voice of one can be heard better than the voice of many talking at the same time.
Unfortunately we don’t live in the happy rainbow and cute kitten world.
Over at DAW Web Hosting Blog, a good point was made. They write:
“The second reason which makes me opponent of the idea is that the hosting market does not need a censor. It is true that shared web hosts do impossible to sell and often mislead their prospective customers. But anyone who are in search of a website service is responsible to stay informed about the market.”
The hosting business does a good enough job at censoring itself and regulating itself. With a few exceptions, if your now a good web host there are enough other web hosts for somebody out there to pick from - and your not going to be in business very long.
Shutting the Door on the Little Web Hosts
With a great council or UN like grouping, this would only be shutting more doors for the little guys out there and make it harder for new guys to get into the business. With the lack of new choices, I think that would overall hurt the hosting marketplace.
Now of course that would be over the long term but it is still something that should be considered.
Big government does not work and the web hosting industry should not get into the game of politics. I don’t want some guy in a suit talking for me, because if it is like big business that came before it this web hosting union would just be another power grab for the rich and a pedestal for the mighty. The last thing the web hosting world needs is another great social divide between the “haves” and the “have-nots”.
