Better Tools for Quick Responses

Customer Support ToolsWeb hosts till tell you that they are always looking to build a better mouse trap when it comes to getting customers the answers that they are looking for. Love them or hate them, quick responses are a part of the web hosting business.

Bottom line? They allow support workers to get often asked questions answered as quickly as possible.

Let AutoHotkey Do the Heavy Typing for You!

Thinking outside the box though and trying to see what you really need when it comes to quickly publishing these answers – well, there just has to be a better way. Personally I set out to find something that would allow me to type in a few letters – hit enter, and automatically paste a four paragraphed answer to a question. I found my answer after spending some time playing with AutoHotkey.

AutoHotkey is a free mouse and keyboard macro program. The part your going to be interested in is the AutoText feature which allows you to write up a simple script, type in a few letters – hit enter and have your quick response typed out for you. It does have a learning curve to master but once you do get it down it is a powerful tool for anybody who finds themselves typing the same thing over and over again.

Your Own Virtual Notebook

Another tool I like to keep at my side at all times is my Google Notebook. While doing my own tech support work – it is handy to have some of the most asked questions there at my fingertips. Not much has to be said about this, because the concept here is so easy to understand.

Copy and save things you need to type out or access often inside of Google Notebook. While going through the e-mail or help desk at your hosting company, keep it open in another tab and you have yet another personal list of quick response tools.

So there you have two great ways to make your customer support work just a little easier on you.

10 Best of the Blogging Scripts – Part 1 of 2

Any web developer worth his weight in PHP code can tell you that there are tons of selections when it comes to finding a blogging script that is right for you. The next time you decide to start up the Web’s next great blog you might want to take some of these choices into consideration.

1. WordPress – In my opinion WordPress is the “kind of kings” when it comes to blogging or content management in general. All hail to the king!

2. Drupal – Drupal is a little more of a WordPress jacked up on steroids. Lots of goodies and better membership system in place too.

3. AJAXPress – A little buggy by looking at the demo but will become a better idea once it has had more time to get polished.

4. Wikiblog – This one tries to mix the blogging and wiki sides of things into an interesting mashup of content creation.

5. Textpattern – Flexable and open source blogging solution – much of the same WordPress look and feel. Only problem is not that many people are using it, so support might be hard to find.

Next week I’ll have a few more selections for you to choose from in part two of this series, if you have any other suggestions you’d like to see on the list please feel free to drop me an e-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com or leave a comment.

Angry Mob Running Your Web Hosting Business?

They are outside of your proverbial web hosting fortress demanding the head of the man who runs this, “Shame of a web hosting company”. You look to your left, the phone support team has vanished. You look to your right and see your server administrators cowarding under their desks. How did you find yourself in this situation and should you have been listening to that mob before they became so angry?

Are You in Trouble?

Angry Hosting Mobs!Every web host has done something that has made the general public mad at them. It is a stepping stone of any Online business and web hosting is no different. Where the difference can be seen is how you tackle these problems.

Now should you listen to public feedback? Yes! Put your personal feelings aside because the public is the ones that will make you or break you. For example, lets say you have the world greatest plan for expanding the web hosting business. You plan it for months, and then on release day – it sinks. Nobody is interested and the public is mad at you for doing it.

Learn to Negotiate to Get What You Want!

Now instead of “sticking with your guns” like an old western, you need to learn how to modify your plan to make it more public friendly. You need to find that middle ground that will make both you and the public at large happy.

There is no reason why you should have to give up on your idea totally or the public should have the final say on how you run your business. The secret is listen to what they have to say, soak it in like a sponge and play the role of King Solomon.

Site Backup CP

Believe it or not, I have stumbled across yet another great tool to get your cPanel controlled web site backed up to your own personal computer. Site Backup CP is the newest edition to the line up and it like others has a lot of great things to love about it.

Site Backup CP

Like the others that have come before it here on the show, it gives you an easy to master interface to get your files and databases backed up from your web hosting server to your own personal computer. Give it your login information, your database names and you are all set.

It does include a scheduling feature too, so you can set it up to backup at whatever time is best for you. What does the price tag say? It is a Windows only program (runs great on Vista) – and will cost you a one time fee of $ 29.95. Not a bad price to pay for peace of mind.

Backup Your Site With ResellerBackup.com

Reseller Backup

After doing my review of CP Site Saver I got a comment from my buddy Gary from BlueFur talking about his own site backup solution, ResellerBackup.com. I told him to send me over a copy and I’d take a look – and I do have to say you can color me impressed. They provide several services and tools to choose from:

File Backup Tool | MySQL Backup Tool | Uptime Monitor Tool | Site Copy Tool

The names pretty much describe the services they proform, so don’t think there is much use in getting into too much detail there. I looked at the file backup tool for my review and it passed all my personal tests. Continue Reading →

Multiple Sites on One Hosting Account?

Confused about Hosting? What is the best way to manage multiple web sites with only one hosting account? That is the question Diane e-mailed to me a little earlier this week, and there are a few different ways you could get this done. Here is Diane’s dilemma.

I am a web designer and I have a bunch of little web sites. I’d like to have multiple web site hosting, so I can easily get in and work on my collection of little web sites.

Right now, I have each one hosted on its own account, so I have to ftp to one, do my thing, disconnect, ftp to the next one, do my thing, disconnect, etc. Also, I don’t want to spend a lot of money on the hosting for these little web sites because they are just little tiny web sites. Can you give me any advice on getting this type of web hosting? Thanks for help.

Now as I noted before there are several ways you could tackle this problem. Continue Reading →

Turn on Hotlink Protection via cPanel

cPanelJohnny sent me an e-mail that was straight and to the point. The control panel solution, cPanel and enabling hotlink protection seemed to confuse him. So I told him I’d go through the process.

Do you want to keep others from stealing your web site graphics and pictures? The hotlink protection provided by your hosting account’s cPanel prevents other websites from directly linking to files on your web site.

Other sites will still be able to link to any file type that you don’t specify (for example, html files). You can use the hotlink protection to keep other sites from linking to your images, videos, and other files. Continue Reading →

Twitter for Tech Support?

Twitter for Support? One question that I get from a multitude of web hosts is, “Are there any alternative methods to tech support that you know of?”. With everybody doing the standard e-mail, help desk and live chat support, people are looking for an alternative to give them an edge over the competition.

After sitting here and giving it some thought, I thought about the things I check on a day to day basis and one solution stuck out like a sore thumb screaming for attention. Twitter would make for an excellent web host to client conversation tool. Continue Reading →
