The Hosting Industry Organization

This new virtual posse of the hosting industry promises to be a socialized group of hosting professionals. Based off a list from LinkedIn – there are many that have already joined (including yours truely) and I am looking forward to seeing what becomes of this just budding project later on down the road.

New Blog! Web Hosting Topics Rocks!

Here is yet another good hosting blog worth subscribing to. Brought to you by the same folks as the DAW Web Hosting Blog and HostingBookmarks.com it promises fresh content for the web hosting addicted. Yes, that would be both you and me!

Blog.Verisign.com? (I didn’t know either)

Did you know that VeriSign had their own collection of blogs from insiders in the company? The company is based around providing secure SSL certificates so, I mean, how exciting can the blog be? Well I was delightfully surprised by a few so the list here is well worth checking out.

Have you found any hidden treasures in or on the web hosting blogs out there? If so drop me an e-mail or leave a comments and let me know about it.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Last week I gave you five quality blogging tools and scripts and this week I am going to finish the job by giving you the second half of my favorite blogging scripts list.

Previously, WordPress was leading the charge as the best of the best, but how do these solutions stack up to that titan of the digital publishing world?

b2evolution – An old one, but still a good one – and can hold it’s own weight still with the other selections out there. Dated, but still works.

Serendipity – This is a PHP-powered weblog application which gives the user an easy way to maintain a weblog or even a complete homepage.

Joomla – Like Drupal, might be too feature rich for the casual blogging fan – but a good engine for in depth web sites or basic blogs.

Sblog – Another one similar to WordPress, looks like it is playing catchup too. Once it gets there though, might be worthy competition.

Simplog – Simple, yet powerful – the name says it all here. You want basics without the fluff – go with Simplog.

No matter which of these selections you decide to choose, you should be well off in your own content producing ways. All of them have their benefits and their drawbacks so best thing to do would be to try them all out and see which does the best job for you.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

With that many blogs out there, there is a lot of backing up that needs to be done. BlogBackupOnline.com will do it for you.

You’ll hear no argument from me that backing up a blog can be very complicated and tedious. Having an external hosting account to do this on can be a lifesaver. At this time they support these blogging platforms:

Blogger

WordPress

TypePad

Friendster

LiveJournal

Serendipity

Windows Live Space

Movable Type

Terapad

Vox

They also provide a restore solution as well. With many of these online backup solutions they have an easy way to upload, but not such an easy job downloading what you’ve backed up. I’m happy to see they have this under control as well.

Backing up your blog is free while they are still in Beta. The bottom line is the storage space though. You get 50 MB of storage space is allocated to your account.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Want to know the top ten hosting RSS feeds you should be subscribing to to stay on top of the industry? Now there is a slew of information out there, and subscribing to the best of the best makes your job just that much easier in tracking what is going on.

From news, to press releases, to conversations here is the best of the best as far as hosting RSS feeds go.

1. Web Hosting Talk [RSS Feed!] – Yes, WebHostingTalk.com does RSS feed output now. You can click on the RSS Feed link on the main page to get a selection of good ways to keep track of things there. This is probably the biggest overall improvement they made in the last big update they rolled out.

2. The Web Hosting Show [RSS Feed!] – Ok, go ahead and call my an egotistical manaiac, I can take it. If your listening you know this is a great resource for all kinds of hosting news, interviews, help and random fun. If your not subscribed then what are you waiting for?

3. The Web Host Industry Review [RSS Feed!] – The WHIR is the big hosting resource for just about everything. From news, to interviews to everything else under the sun. They have a lot of feeds as well so you can pick and choose your favorite things to read.

4. Google News Search for “Web Hosting” [RSS Feed!] – Google is a great source for web hosting press releases and general information you might not see anywhere else. It combs a lot of the hosting resources out there and is one of the first places I check for the latest and greatest happenings.

5. The Hosting News [RSS Feed!] – TheHostingNews.com is another one of my favorite hosting news resources. The RSS feed is a little hard to find (hidden away on the sidebar) but it still well worth subscribing to. Yet another good place to get hosting news and interviews.

6. Netcraft [RSS Feed!] – Netcraft.com is a good place to get updates from the geekier side of the hosting indutry. From following server OS trends to getting uptime and downtime news, they are worth subscribing to for anybody because it is a good way to learn about some of the more advanced hosting trends.

7. Web Hosting Finds Blog [RSS Feed!] – The blog that the Web Hosting Finds web site puts out there is one of the more entertaining hosting feeds I have subscribed to. Covering a lot of random yet interesting news and links inside of the industry – you can not afford to pass it up.

8. The WHIR Blogs [RSS Feed!] – Wasn’t the WHIR already on this list? Well contrary to even my first thoughts the WHIR Blogs have bloomed into a really neat source for all types of industry opinions and coverage. This is one the best “brand extentions” I guess you could call it that the WHIR team has been apart of.

9. DomainTools Blog [RSS Feed!] – You can’t have hosting without domains, it is like peanut butter without the jelly. DomainTools.com is already my favorite domain.. well, tool and resource. Now they are delivering me my favorite blog about domains as well.

10. Web Host Blog [RSS Feed!]- Although I wish it was updated a little more often, WebHostBlog.com is a good source for more general hosting information and news. Put on by the team behind the Web Host Magazine and Buyer’s Guide this is a resource that might be light on quantity but high on quality.

A Few More Worth Mentioning…

Here are just a few more that are worth mentioning:

Reseller Hosting Guide – [RSS Feed!]

Web Hosting Unleashed – [RSS Feed!]

Isabel Wang’s Blog – [RSS Feed!]

Have a favorite that didn’t get added to the list? Leave it in the comments or send it my way!

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

When it comes to picking a good Web host for setting up a blog, there are a few things you must keep in mind.

You want to first make sure that they are going to deliver you enough disk space and bandwidth to keep your head above water for a while. If you expect to write five or more posts a day – you could fill up that space pretty quick. Also make sure that you have an upgrade you can make when you need it.

It might be to the next largest plan – or it might be to a VPS or dedicated account. If you are a nobody just starting your first blog, you could probably just go with the least expensive plan and move on from there. Find some of blogs out there and see who they use for hosting.

Uptime is always important too – because you never want your readers to be left looking at a “this site is not available right now” message too long.

Even though we haven’t picked our blogging engine yet – you must keep in mind you need a Web host that will support the features you need. So you might pick a few good candidates first, and then go on to finding the content management system you need.

From CHMODing the right files to uploading things to the right spot, it can be a headache in the making. Well on this special edition of the Web Hosting Show I’ve decided to step you through the process of getting a blog setup on your own hosting space using WordPress.

The Web Hosting Show is now on the air.

Running Time: 17 minutes | File Size: 7.75 MB

Here are just a few topics that we discussed on this week’s episode of the Web Hosting Show.

How to Find the Right Web Host for Blogging

Tips on How to Pick the Right CMS for You

WordPress Themes and Plugins – Get Them Going

Blog hosting is a big part of what made the Web hosting industry grow by leaps and bounds in the past ten years or so. Everybody and their grandmother wanted a place to tell their stories, post their options and share their thoughts. Now just about everybody has one.

The only problem is that some of the best tools out there are intimidating. I’m here to hopefully take some of the intimidation away and get you started with your own blog about whatever your passion is.

Yes, even I was victim to content theft from my Web site.

My Firefox related Web site, FirefoxFacts.com had almost its entire archive stolen by a guy that I guess couldn’t come up with anything else to say of his own. Now this is not a new problem, it has been happening on the Web for a really long time.

How Can You Find Out if People Are Stealing Content?

Well, if you are running a blog or anything with a trackback system, it is going to be an easier thing to find. Then you can just search your links back and hope for the best. If not, you might hit up the search engines for your titles or phrases and see what you can find. Going through your Web site’s referral links might be a good way to find out things as well. Usually these people don’t bother changing anything so you might have many links from them coming back at you.

Why Do People Steal Content?

They do it because they are too lazy or uninspired to create their own content. Instead of coming up with their own material, they attach themselves to creative people and leech off all that they can. There is also a lot of money to be made as well. Copying over articles and then running Google AdSense ads all of them can rake you in some serious dough if you know what your doing.

What Can You Do to Stop Them?

Well, this is the Web Hosting Show – so it would only be related if I mentioned something about Web hosting here. First things first, you should try to contact the author of the Web site to see if they will kindly remove the articles. If that does not work, then you can go to the Web host and tell them that these leeches are stealing your copyrighted material.

If they still refuse, then you could always go after the Web host’s Web host. Contact their data center and complain and complain until somebody does something about it. It is not right and it is not legal. The biggest problem you are going to run into are lazy hosting industry professionals.

Take this response I got back from The Planet:

To Whom It May Concern – Please note that below-referenced copyright infringement notice does not substantially comply with the required notification elements of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (“DMCA”). Please note that we have not passed on the substantive merits of your claim.

Thankfully the Web host that they were hosting did listen to my complaints and took the copycat Web site down.

Now those of you who have been following this podcast or me for very long knows that I had launched Hosting Hoopla a few months ago as a news reader. Well that idea has come and gone and is no longer. So what was I do to with a great hosting related domain name?

Well I decided to simplify things a ‘bit and give the hosting industry a new resource to have.

I guess you could call this Hosting Hoopla 2. The domain name is staying the same though. Just point your browser at HostingHoopla.com and you will have a better idea of what I am talking about.

This time around I wanted to create what you could call a “mega” list of Web hosting related resources. I have hosting news, forums, blogs and more all listed there. Also, as you can see from the layout I am accepting any and all links from anybody just by clicking on the huge icon you see at the top.

So this is my call out to all of you. Give me your links, give me your resources. This Web site will not work on just my own bookmarks alone. I need for you to give me the links you need to have handy so everybody can get something out of using the Web site.

You see my idea here is that you can have one Web site bookmarked (or saved to your favorites) and get the entire Web hosting industry at your finger tips. I have become tired of having too many links and not having an easy way of going through them. Now both myself and all of you have a quick and easy way to access what you want, what you need and what you love.

I am open to feedback though, as always – so if you have any to share about HostingHoopla.com please send it my way to mitch@mitchkeeler.com. Let me know what you want here and I will do my best to deliver.

Hey there, I am the Web hosting industry’s media rockstar Mitch Keeler and I want to welcome one and all to the one and only voice of the Web hosting world, the Web Hosting Show. As with every episode I have done, this podcast is supported by Web Hosting Chat. Go check out WebHostingChat.com and find out why they are your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

I figured this week’s main topic should be one that everybody can get something out of. It seems like more and more people and companies want to blog but can’t get over that first step of getting things set up. Figuring out the backend (I can tell you from personal experience) is usually the hardest part. So, hopefully after today’s show it will be a little less hard for some of you out there.

For those of you who might be new to the Web Hosting Show, this is a podcast where I cover the latest and greatest the Web hosting industry has to offer. I like to think of it as the blue light special of the wild and wacky Web hosting world. If you want to find more podcasts like this one, then the place to visit is WebHostingShow.com.

Hosting Headline

This week’s Web Hosting Headline is brought to you by the Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. Go check them out at WebHostMagazine.com.

Microsoft Announces Enhanced Hosting Solution at HostingCon 2006
At this year’s HostingCon 2006 in Las Vegas, Microsoft announced the release of Microsoft Solution for Windows-based Hosting Version 4.0, giving Web hosts the ability to launch new services faster, reach Web developers, and improve operations through best practices, tools, scripts and code samples.

Mitch’s Thoughts: Now Microsoft’s place in the world of Web hosting isn’t as big as it’s place everywhere else. I do have to give them credit though for at least giving something new for Web hosting companies to make use of. While Windows-based hosting isn’t the industry leader right now, it is growing by leaps and bounds every single day.

Hot Topic in Hosting

The Hot Topic in Hosting is sponsored by Top Hosts. Go check them out on the Web at TopHosts.com.

Web Hosting Solutions for Blogs

So you are ready to set up a blog and let the world know your opinions or thoughts on anything and everything. Before you get up and running, you need a place to host your thoughts. Now should you go with a specialized blog hosting provider or set things up on your own?

Going through a blog hosting provider makes things a little easier on you. You don’t have to worry about the backend as much, and you can focus more on the content. Now where you might run into problems is in the area of customization. With most blog hosting providers, you are stuck in doing things the way they want you to. Sure, some providers do offer at least a little customization, but not much.

Here are some blog hosting providers you can check out:

+ TypePad.com
+ Blogger.com
+ WordPress.com

If you set things up on your own, you would have to be in charge of design, web hosting and content. This is sometimes more of a headache than somebody wants to get into. It can become very stressful getting all these things in order and getting some sort of system set up on the back end. On the other side, you are free to pretty much do whatever you want and your not tied down to any “system” that is already in place.

Here are some blogging engines for you to install on your Web hosting account:

+ WordPress
+ MovableType
+ Textpattern

Look at the pros and cons of both ways and decide which one better suits your needs. As far as personal recommendations go, I really like WordPress as a blogging engine. Just slap that baby on a web hosting account and you are good to go. If you have any opinions on your favorite way of doing things, share them with me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

The Web Hosting Site of the Week is brought to you by Ping! Zine. Go check them out and subscribe to the free magazine at PingZine.com.

This week’s pick for Web hosting site of the week is WebHostingFinds.com.

Now this is yet another Web hosting resource that I stumbled upon while looking at folks that were linking back to WebHostingShow.com. Now at first glance, it might just look like another standard Web hosting Web site. After looking through it though, I have to say it offers much more than that.

The one feature that I like the most from the Web site is the blog section. Tossing this in with the rest of this show’s theme, I have found a lot of interesting information here that I haven’t seen anywhere else. I’m not sure who the mind behind the magic is, but I’d love to talk with them.

So go visit WebHostingFinds.com and when you do make sure you let them know that the Web Hosting Show sent you there.

Final Web Hosting Thoughts

Well that is it for this week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show. If you want to interact with this podcast, it is easy to do.

The Fourth of July break is over, and I am ready, willing and able to get back to business. Today we’ll be talking about multiple Web site hosting on one hosting account. We will be talking about the new Web hosting blog out there. We will be answering your Web hosting questions. This is the Web Hosting Show, podcast number 20 and it is on the air.

+ Download the Web Hosting Show!

Runtime: 25 minutes

Hello and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web Hosting World. The Web Hosting Show is brought to you by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions. Who am I? I am the slightly sunburned, Mitch Keeler.

Did you miss me last week? I am really sorry for my absence, but I just ran out of time to get everything done. Over the Fourth of July I had a lot of friends and family to see and visit with, and the Web Hosting Show just kind of got passed to the back burner. I am back here now though, and I am ready to get back to business. I am ready to rock the Web hosting world like it has never been rocked before. Most importantly, I am here to help you, one on one with your toughest Web hosting questions.

Do you think we should add a Skype voice mail to the Web Hosting Show? This way you guys and gals could leave me short audio questions, feedback, comments or complaints and I could get them onto the show. If you are interested in seeing this on the show, then send me an E-mail, leave a comment about it or go to the Web Hosting Show forums and post about it. I don’t want to move forward with this unless there is a REAL interest about it from the public so… let me know!

Enough jibber-jabber though, let us get right back into those beautiful Web hosting headlines I love so much.

Web Hosting Headlines

The Web hosting news and headlines are brought to you by The Web Host Industry Review. The Web Host Industry Review is the place to go to get all the latest Web hosting news from around the globe.

News Sites Slow After London Attacks

Several news Web sites had trouble staying online on Thursday morning as a result of the surge in Internet traffic following the bombings on the London public transit system.

ServerCity Offers Mac Mini Hosting

Dedicated hosting provider Server City announced on Tuesday that it is now offering Mac Mini servers for rental, starting from £69 per month. The servers include 100GB of data transfer.

New Web Hosting Blog Looks at Issues

Montreal-based Internet editor WebDepart announced on Thursday it has launched a Web Hosting Blog, dubbed The Web Hosting Geek. The blog, updated on a daily basis by Martin Leclair, co-founder of Web hosting firm iWeb Technologies, will cover a variety Web hosting issues and concerns.

Do you have some Web hosting news? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Every so often you just need a quick nugget of knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own personal writing space where I go one on one with you everyday with some of my Web hosting articles, random postings and updates on my current projects.

When moving from one Web hosting company to another, make sure you look for special deals your new Web host might be offering. Now I don’t mean the usual sales jargon of unlimited this or that. Some Web hosting companies will move your Web site for you, as long as they can get the information that they need.

This could be very helpful for those folks out there who have a really big Web site they want to move, but don’t have a reliable enough way to get the moving done. Downloading and uploading massive amounts of files can be a real pain as well. So save yourself some trouble and find out if your new Web host will do the heavy lifting for you!

Do you have a Web hosting tip? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Thoughts, Views and Ideas

All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are sponsored by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.

SEO and Hosting Multiple Site on one Hosting Plan

Here is a question I got last week from Shumon Hakim, a loyal Web Hosting Show listener:

First of all I love you podcast. Very informative for beginner web designers. I am trying to host multiple sites under one hosting plan. I don’t want to pay for a reseller package. Mainly because the sites are fairly small. I found a hosting service, micfo.com, that will allow me to host multiple sites under one hosting plan. What kind of effect will this have on SEO? Is it good to host multiple sites under one plan? How do robots see the sites? Do they see them as individual sites or one site?

Now I am far from being a search engine optimization expert, heck I don’t even play one on TV! As far as SEO goes though, it shouldn’t matter in your case, as long as the three separate Web sites have three separate domains. Spiders follow links, so if link A has nothing to do with link B, then it shouldn’t see it, even though they are both on the same Web hosting server.

Web Hosting Show on iTunes?

I am currently working on getting the Web Hosting Show included onto iTunes’s podcasting selection. I just submitted things yesterday, so hopefully it will not take too long to get our content there. Thanks to the folks at FeedBurner, getting the RSS feed ready for iTunes was quick and easy. Just filled in a few blocks of text, put in a picture, then submitted it inside of iTunes itself.

Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you’d like to hear me cover on The Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Site Design Help

All of The Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.

This week’s victim is Net Money Web from the BrowseHosts.com Forums. He has even been so nice as to give me a few questions to answer during this review, so here they are and here are my answers. Play along at home if you want to, and be sure to leave a comment if you have anything else to add to the Web Hosting Show forums or Show Notes!

1. What improvements should I make on layout from my website?

I have two helpful hints here for you. First things first, drop all the dollar signs from the Web page’s layout. That just makes things look a little more tacky and more like a spam Web site than a real one. The second helpful hint would be to get yourself a new logo. The one you have right now looks a little pixelated and stretched out. You want a logo that sticks in people’s heads. One that they will not soon forget.

2. What free, sample and easy scripts should I put on my website?

Not every Web site needs a cool script to get by. Here is an idea though, why not start a blog on the side for the Web site? Highlight some of the better programs there, and let us know why they are worth checking out.

3. What programs should I exclude from the site?

Give us programs that are proven to work. Plain and simple.

4. What programs should I include on the site?

One word. Scams.

I hope that helps! Creating a Web site to help folks make money is a good thing. The only problem I could see you running into is being looked at as a spamming or junk Web site and never be looked at again. You want to make sure you stay on the side of good. Remember that you are there to help people find good programs. Good luck, and if you find a quarter in your couch… feel free to send it my way!

Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you send me an E-mail to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Personally I have just about given up on efforts to keep AutoLink from creeping slowly into our lives, changing our content and causing more problems than it would ever solve. My mindset is that Google is going to do what they want to do if you like it or not. Do I like it? No. Will I have to learn to live with it? Probably so. Thankfully though, there are some folks out there who have made living with it a much better option now.

Everybody else and their grandmother is sounding off about this topic, so I guess I will toss my proverbial hat into the ring and sound off as well. Many more popular or more brilliant minds than my own have pretty much said everything I could say on the topic.
