Some might say that a Web host’s most feared nightmare is a customer with a list of 50 or more questions they want to have answered in under 15 minutes or less.

I have been in that situation myself, and I know it is a pain the butt to tackle. It is the duty of a hosting guru to explain these things though, and that is what I continue to do today.

Which one is better – Windows hosting or Linux hosting?

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are new to Web sites and Web hosting (or if you just like it better) I would say go with Linux. Windows still can not compete with Linux as far as the number of services out there for you to use and the support for things you would want to do with your hosting account. Maybe someday – but not yet.

Should I backup my Web site or does my Web host do that for me?

Well, chances are your Web host will do that for you – but you can never be too safe. I would say at least backup one a month to make sure you do not loose any important files or pages on your Web site. Some of the data we are uploading is very valuable and it is too much of a pain to have to try to recreate it all again.

If I am a Web host, should I go out of my way to take PayPal payments for Web hosting?

Yes! PayPal is something that nearly everybody has and most people feel safer using it to pay for good than putting in their credit card information.

How long is the average wait time for a new Web hosting account to be setup?

Well it will change from Web host to Web host – but I would say a fair estimate would be within 24 hours of you signing up with them.

My hosting costs a month are pretty low. Is that a bad thing?

Not at all. Every Web host out there is trying to “lowball” the next by offering a bigger and better deal for even less money. Try to do your best to research the company before signing on the dotted line and you should be ok in most cases.

What if you had your own personal Web hosting guru that you could lock up under your house and ask questions to whenever you needed to? Well I can’t promise I’ll live in your basement but I will answer some of your most frequently asked hosting questions.

What can I do if I want to host my Web site on a server that has no adult material on it? I don’t want to share a server with some pervert.

The first thing you can do is get over it. There is hardly any way you are going to know who your neighbors are on a server, and neither will the outside world. Your safe!

Do all Web hosts support Ruby on Rails (RoR)?

A lot do, but I don’t think it is an industry standard just yet. PHP and MySQL are easy to find, but you might have to ask if Ruby on Rails is available on the plan or as an upgrade to the hosting plan.

Are there any Web hosts out there that will deliver me a custom Web hosting plan?

I am sure there might be, but I do not know of any right off hand. Most Web hosts will allow for a few upgrades here or there, but for the most part you will be locked into the plan you have or the plan that is packaged over or under the one you have – depending on if you want to upgrade or downgrade.

What is the best forum software out there today?

I like Vanilla and SMF. Two good options and I am pretty sure both are totally free.

I plan on hosting videos on my Web site. Should I go with hosting the files myself or putting them up some place like YouTube?

The best way to go would be to go with the “YouTube” option. There are a lot of video hosting solutions out there to go with – and it will give you more exposure outside of your own little empire of Web sites. Also you don’t have to worry about the huge disk space and bandwidth limitations either.

On to week three of answering some of your most frequently asked questions. Web development can be a pretty hard business to get into – so hopefully I am helping to guide you in the right direction to learn.

Remember if you have any questions of your own that you would like to ask you can always drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

What is an addon domain name?

This would be an additional domain name that you could host on your Web hosting account.

More control panels these days are coming with this feature and Web hosts are taking advantage of it.

I want to start up a Web hosting company, what is the most important thing to remember?

No matter if you have been in business one day or one thousands days you should always remember to respect your customers. Give them what they want and answer their every need and you should have no problems at all.

What is a good way to advertise my hosting business?

I would say your best bet would be to join some of the hosting forums out there like Web Hosting Talk and Web Hosting Chat. You might spend some cash on some advertising as well.

Where is a good place to comparison shop for Web hosting?

I have always liked FindMyHosting.com.

I want to start up an adult Web site, but I don’t know if the Web host I am interested in will allow it. How can I find out?

Well in most cases, as long as what you are producing is legal then you should have no problems. The best way to find out if they allow it or not is to ask their sales team. Most Web hosts are more than happy to let you know one way or the other.

After getting a lot of happy folks E-mailing me back and thanking me for addressing some of their frequently asked questions, I figured we would do it again. This time around we have different questions, because answering the same questions each week would just get a little dull.

Why will my host not let me backup my personal backup files to my Web hosting account?

Some Web hosts might but most will not let you store personal backups of your photos or documents. This is because they just are not in that sort of business. There are plenty of places that are though and I would recommend going with them.

What are some Online hosting backup solutions?

My favorite from all the ones I have personally reviewed would be Box.net. Another popular choice out there is Carbonite.

I am a Web host and I keep getting bad press and reviews. What should I do?

I say turn that negative press into inspiration to make yourself better. Peoples’ opinions count and you should listen to as many as you can – then do your best with the most popular requests and thoughts you get.

I would like to find somebody to back my Online project. How do I find a Web host who would do that for free?

Find somebody out there (or maybe a few) and just ask them if they can help. You might get a few Web hosts laugh at you and your idea – but eventually you’ll run into that Web hosting business that will want to help you out.

When was the date of your very first Web hosting podcast and where can I find it?

The very first Web Hosting Show podcast as recorded February 14th, 2005. You can find it by searching WebHostingShow.com or by clicking the “All Archives” link on any of the Web Hosting Show’s Web pages.

Some people might say that this Web hosting podcast is sort of like one big list of FAQs. I get a lot of frequently asked questions on or about the Web hosting industry so in the next few weeks I want to share with you some of the most common questions I get – and give you all the answers you seem to be looking for.

Who is the best Web host out there today?

Can’t say that I have a favorite, because I am trying to do my best to stay fair and balanced here. I would say shop for what you need and find the host that matches your budget.

Where is the best place to buy new domain names?

Well with this one I will be willing to say that GoDaddy.com has been pretty reliable for me in this department. I don’t know if I would buy anything else from them – but as far as domain names go you should be in good hands.

Why do some Web hosts offer unlimited services?

It is a gimmick to sell more Web hosting accounts. I have said it before and I will say it again. There is no such thing as unlimited in Web hosting. Every server has its limits.

Why would I want to get a dedicated or semi-dedicated Web hosting plan?

Well if you find yourself needing more of the server’s resources, such as RAM or CPU usage then a dedicated plan would be a good way to go. This way you have a little more room to stretch your legs and you can work the server a little harder as well.

Why do all Web hosts seem to like to put pictures of servers on their home page?

Maybe they think there are some sick freaks out there that get turned on by all the metal and hard working server action? For the most part I think they just want everybody to know they do hosting and hey, thats what a server looks like.

Well after last week’s release of the Web Hosting Show’s Ecommerce Web Hosting Guide, I got a lot of E-mail from you. I figured I could spend a few minutes here answering some of the most frequently asked questions about it that I got in the past week. This first question comes from Barry.

Hey Mitch, I want to start an Online store but I am not sure which route I should go down. I only have a few products to be sold and I think going for a shopping cart might be too much too soon. Is there an easier alternative than installing a shopping cart script? Thanks! Love the podcast!

Yes, after getting your first E-mail and we talked back and forth a few times, I think I have a good idea of what you are looking to do. I think you would be alright with just using Paypal buttons for now. Just list your products via a regular old Web page and put the Paypal payment buttons under each product. This is the quickest and easiest way to turn yourself into an ecommerce Web site.

Later on down the road you might want to invest the time and money into getting a shopping cart – but no reason to do that right now, especially if you aren’t sure how the business will pan out in the long run.

Now Gene wants to know about easier ecommerce solutions.

Mitch I really enjoyed your podcast special last week. My problem is I don’t want to be bothered with doing all of this. I would just like a few branded items and an easy way to produce them. Any thoughts?

Sure, I mean honestly you don’t have to do any of the stuff I suggested last week if you want somebody else to do all of the virtual heavy lifting.

Check out CafePress.com and get yourself a store setup there. From there you can upload your own images to be placed on mugs, shirts, mouse pads and more. I have used it before and I can vouch for their professionalism. Everything I have ordered through there has made it here and is made of quality goods.

Have any other ecommerce, Web development or Web hosting questions to ask? Get them sent to me with your name and URL and you might get yourself featured on the Web Hosting Show podcast.

I guess you could consider it a type of Web hosting help site that the Web host runs itself.

Well, I have found a very nice back end for you to make that knowledge base into a reality.

KnowledgebasePublisher is an open source publishing tool that will allow you to export the brains of your customer support and put it all on the Web. It is so easy to use that you can be managing knowledge base on your Web site right from your own web browser.

KnowledgebasePublisher allows a content administrator in your company to easily add/edit/delete and post current information to your website at any time, day or night.

Some of the included features are:

Related Articles

Users Can Ask Questions

Protection for Categories

Unlimited Categories

There is a lot more to love from this tool as well. Who knows, I might install it and get it running for the Web Hosting Show sometime soon. It has been a long time since I have been this impressed with a Web site back end script. All you need to do is install it, personalize it a little, and the rest of the work is done for you.

Now this is an idea I have had for a while that any Web host could make good use of. If they opened it up to the public, then they could make good use out of it as well. I would like to see more Web hosts start up support wikis for problem situations that might come up. Now I am not talking about your standard help site or forums.

I want to see something that both your customers and support staff could update. I could see this setup very easily using a wiki. It would have to be moderated, of course, but it could really connect both the Web host with it’s support staff and it’s users as far as what questions are out there and what needs to be fixed.

If you didn’t want to give you clients full access to this type of system then you could at least setup a place where they could post questions. Not questions that need to be answered as soon as possible. Questions that are more general that might come in handy knowing if a bad situation ever pops up in the future.

As far as I know, there are not any Web hosts that do this just yet – but if you know of one or you are one please, let me know! I would be more than interested to check out your setup and see how you handle your own Web hosting knowledge base.

Hello I am the media maven of the Web hosting industry Mitch Keeler, and I want to welcome you to the most fun and entertaining podcast you will ever listen to on or about the Web hosting industry, the Web Hosting Show.

For those of you who might be new listeners, each week I try to go over the best of the best inside of the Web hosting industry. We tackle news, tips, thoughts and links to make your experience with all this hosting jargon just a little better.

This week is going to be a little different though. Instead of me deciding what I am going to talk about, it is totally up to you this time around. I have a handful of E-mail that need some answers so let us get into what you want, what you need and what you love.

Does forwarding a domain hurt your search engine standings?

This first question coming from Mary is an interesting one. Now these days it seems like everybody is still worried about the big bad search engines not listing us for one reason or another.

Personally I think the search engines should be working to make us happy – not the other way around.

With my feelings put aside though, No I do not think you should have a problem forwarding a domain name to your Web site. Since for the most part it treats it like a 301 redirect, it should neither help nor harm you in search engine rankings. At least that is how I understand it.

If there is a guy from Google or a SEO expert in the audience that wants to set me straight – feel free to leave a comment on the show notes.

How can I help my customers find what they are looking for?

Sami was the one who sent me this great question. One thing that I see a lot when it comes to customer and client relations inside of the Web hosting world is that there is a lot of asking about services. Do you support this? Do you have that? What is the version number for this, that and the other?

For the Web hosting clients or folks looking for a good Web host, I have a tip for you.

Much of this information can be found on the Web host’s Web site already. Before you go and ask support or send that E-mail, you might find it quicker to find the answer yourself. Some places you might search are:

+ Web Host’s Frequently Asked Questions
+ Web Host’s User Forums
+ Web Host’s Help Site or Help Desk

Now for the Web hosts out there, you have to make sure that you have this data available for the public. The longer they have to spend asking questions, the less likely they are going to be signing up for a new Web hosting account. Make sure you have a FAQ page setup and make sure new visitors are going to be able to find it.

Some Web hosts have the problem with putting too much “sales talk” on the front page and not enough help. The thing to do is balance out both helpful information and sales perks so that folks want what you are selling and they know what it is.

Is HostJury a good place to get opinions about Web hosts?

George wants to know if I know anything on the Web host reviewer, HostJury.com. Well after spending a minute or two on the Web site – this seems like a nice wrap up of what they do there:

Unlike other web hosting reviews sites we don’t want to give you our opinionated view of providers (often geared towards the site that pays the most for affiliate links) – we want to give you, the user, the ability to recommend and review your web hosting provider to other users and to share your experiences about them.

Now I always like to start on the nice side of things, so I have to say this looks like a pretty good resource to go to. The only thing I would have to ask the owners of the Web site is if they allow Web host’s to come back and answer any reviews that have been given?

Nobody likes to hear just one side of the story, and to get the full experience we need to hear both sides and make up our mind from there. This is most helpful when you run into situations where the Web hosting client may have left on bad terms and is now just trying to go around and hurt the Web host on these review Web sites.

Now this is not just something that HostJury needs to do, I am speaking more at the entire Web host review system in a whole. A lot of places do offer feedback from the Web host – and when they do it is a very good thing for all parties involved.

What is an easy way for me to get reviews from other Web sites?

This question sent in from Mark ties in with the previous question sent in from George. Now most if not all of you know about these Web host review Web sites. I have already covered that topic today. You might also make a special section of your own Web site or forums for customer reviews as well. Now that is good, but it isn’t a review from a third party or a Web site outside of your “base” of Web sites. For that I am going to point you towards ReviewMe.com.

For advertisers (that would be you) ReviewMe gets your services or Web site reviewed by bloggers, gaining your site traffic, invaluable feedback, and word of mouth buzz. I think this is an exciting new resource that Web hosts can gain a lot from. For my blog, Mitchelaneous.com I signed up and will be willing to write any review that you need. This is not getting a blogger in your pocket, this is getting a person with a lot of readers talking about you and starting “buzz” in the world about your product.

No matter which blog you choose, there is nothing saying it has to be a good review. If you are offering crap, you will probably get a review saying you offer crap. As long as you are providing a good quality service and are willing to pay for good quality reviews, this is a match made in heaven when it comes to getting the word out in more ways than one.

How can I find a job inside of the Web hosting industry?

This question (this time sent in by Kris) is one that I get asked at least one a month. Now how did I get a job inside of the Web hosting industry? Well for me it was all about being at the right place at the right time or knowing the right people.

I realize though that I might be a little bit of a special situation. This podcast has brought me a lot of attention – and a lot of people wanting to gain my services. For the regular Joe or Jane on the street though I would recommend checking out a new service out there at HostCareers.com.

For people needing work I have a feeling this is going to be one of the top spots to look Online. The Web site is new (only launched in the past few weeks) but offers a lot of promise. All you need to do is browse through some of the job listings available or search for what you need. After you find what you want – just click “apply for this job offer” and you are good to go.

Now Web hosts, this could be a good resource for you as well. Need to fill a spot inside of your own company? HostCareers.com plugs you right into the folks that are looking to work. Job listings are free for a limited time so hurry and get your open positions listed today.

This is a service that is long overdue for the Web hosting industry and you can bet it will be the first place I send folks when it comes to finding a job in this industry that we all know and love.

Hello I am the Web hosting industry’s media rock star, Mitch Keeler, and welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions.

What does it take to become successful in Web hosting? That is one question I get asked a lot. To tell you the truth, I’m still trying to figure out that question myself. I guess reputation building takes time.

A lot of the time we all want instant results for our actions, but in the real world, that just doesn’t happen. The best thing you can do is find something to do that you love, and give 150% into the work that you do. With all the hype and hoopla aside, the best stuff always rises to the top.

Have something you want to tell me one on one? Just send me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com with all your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and comments and I’ll be sure to get back with you as soon as possible.

Web Hosting Headlines

The latest Web hosting news from around the globe is brought to you by the Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. Do you have some Web hosting news to share? Make sure you send it to me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

DemoDemo.com the leading provider of web hosting Flash Tutorials and maker of the DemoCenter, announced that it has begun offering its products on a subscription basis, making it the first provider in the industry to do so.The new service, which starts at just $10.00 per month, allows web hosts to offer their customers DemoDemo.com’s flash tutorials without making a significant initial investment. No long-term commitments or contracts are required to use the service.

[Read the Rest at HostingHoopla.com!]

Mitch’s Take: This is big news for an Web host out there today that wants to provide a few flash tutorials for their clients. DemoDemo.com is the top resource out there today when it comes to getting these tutorials produced and out to your customers.

The number one complaint I have heard from Web hosts about DemoDemo.com is that some of the tutorials you can purchase were a little expensive. Well, nobody can claim that reason anymore. So if your a Web host looking to fill out your support pages a little more, give DemoDemo.com a chance.

Web Site Design Help

All of our Web site design help is brought to you by All Hosting Deals. Do you have a Web site layout that needs a little help? Send me a link at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Now this week I’m not going to review a Web site design. Instead, I have a tool for you that will make launching and designing your next Web site just a little easier.

WordPress is quickly becoming my favorite content management system. It is what I used to get both FirefoxFacts.com and HostingHoopla.com up and running. Now what makes it so great?

1. There was a quick install. The hardest part about the entire install process was setting up the MySQL stuff. With that out of the way though, it couldn’t have been more simple.

2. There are lots of different plugins and themes to play with to add more tools to your Web site. If you have spent any time at all working in HTML or CSS, getting these going shouldn’t be a problem at all.

So if your looking for a new backend of that new Web site you are planning, do me a favor and at least give WordPress a shot. I can promise you that you will like what you see.

Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points

You pick the topics and I talk about them. All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Do you have a topic you’d like to hear me discuss? Just drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

For Web Hosts – How Do I Get Myself Known?

The number one question that I get from Web hosts is about getting themselves known Online. How do you build a client base and how do you build a reputation for yourself. That sad thing about this question is, there is no one answer. There will never be one key to find to open the locker of success. Success takes time to build.

1. Get out and discuss hosting on some of the Web hosting forums out there.

2. Purchase some ads via AdSense, or look on Web development forums for sponsorship deals.

3. Ask current clients to spread the word about you.

If you follow those three tips, then I can promise you that you will be going in the right direction when it comes to building your own Web hosting reputation Online.

For Hosting Clients – How Do I Find the Best Web Host?

Now the question I hear most from Web hosting clients is a little different. Most of the time when I get E-mails from regular folks, they want to know what the best Web host out there is. Well, once again there is no one solid answer. Is there one Web host out there that is better than all the rest? Probably not.

You see one Web host may be great in one area, but not so great in another one. Finding one Web host that is good at everything isn’t going to be an easy task to do. What you need to do is write down on a sheet of paper the qualities you are looking for in a Web hosting provider. Some of these questions might include:

1. How much bandwidth and disk space do I need?

2. How is the customer support like?

3. How often is work done on the servers?

That should get the Web hosting clients that are listening to this show on the right track to finding the Web host that is right for them.

Hosting Tips and Tricks

All of my hosting tips and tricks are brought to you by my blog, Mitchelaneous. Do you have a Web hosting tip or trick to share? If you do, send it to me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Ever wonder how the Web host down the block got all those neat features on his or her Web site? Go check out HotScripts.com’s Web Hosting Tools section. It has lots of different resources for Web hosts to check out. From shopping carts to whois searching, just about every base is covered.

So if you are a Web host wanting to offer a few more features via the Web site, give HotScripts.com’s Web Hosting Tools a shot.

Web Host of the Week

I belive in giving credit where credit is due. The Web Hosting Show Web Host of the Week is brought to you by BrowseHosts.com. Do you know a Web host that deserves some time in the spotlight? Send me a link at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

The Web host of the week this week is NeitSolutions.com.

The personal plan comes with 20 MB of disk space, 2 GB of bandwidth. What is the price of this deal? It is only $5.95 a month. That sounds pretty good to me. These smaller Web hosting plans can make a great place for people to get started with Web hosting without too much cost. If you want to take a step above free hosting, but you aren’t ready to spend too much money, this is the plan for you.

So go check out NeitSolutions.com and let them know that the Web Hosting Show sent you there!

Final Web Hosting Thoughts
