I am torn between two different versions of the same GoDaddy commercial when it comes to number two on my best of the GoDaddy ads list. This one known as the “marketing” commercial (like many others) had two versions. One was the “ok for TV” version and the other was the “extended GoDaddy” version. Here are both of them.

Made for TV Version of the “Marketing” Commercial

Extended Unrated Version of the “Marketing” Commercial

Now the first one is actually a better commercial that makes a lot of sense. It gets to the point quickly, like any good commercial should. Now the second one has a soft spot in my heart because it includes three things I love – marketing, a midget and a lot of eye candy in the form of both Danica Patrick and Candice Michelle. I just can’t choose! Well, if this is a list for the best “ads” I guess number one would have to win.

Now you might watch that and say it wasn’t that funny. I will give you that, but at least it had a point and told a story a little better than most of them have. In comparison, you have the Basic Instinct knock-off ad which, well – there is nothing funny there. They just tried to rip on that movie’s most famous seen but do nothing to make it their own.

So where should we start? How about in the shower? Starting with number five on my best list would be the Danica Patrick “extended” shower spot from the 2009 Super Bowl.

Overall, it didn’t make me laugh out loud – but didn’t annoy me either, so it belongs on the list. It is “T and A” meets the three stooges. So what do you think about this one, was it a hit or a miss? Share your thoughts, and there will be another look back at the GoDaddy commercials tomorrow.

Now let us fast forward, because unfortunately GoDaddy refuses to raise the bar…

Now let us fast forward, because unfortunately GoDaddy refuses to raise the bar…

2006 = Another Super Bowl Controversial Commercial

2007 = Another Super Bowl Controversial Commercial

2008 = Another Super Bowl Controversial Commercial

Ok, so GoDaddy has kind of run the idea of having a pretty girl in a controversial commercial into the ground. They shoot a commercial, tell us the Super Bowl commercial gods refused to air it, release that one Online and then give us a “censored” one for the Super Bowl.

So that brings us to today, and myself reading a press release on theWHIR’s web site:

For its fifth consecutive year advertising during the NFL championship, discount hosting provider Go Daddy has shot two racy new ads this week featuring IndyCar driver Danica Patrick, to appear in the Super Bowl, following NBC’s approval.

Oh joy, another couple of racy ads for the Super Bowl. Let me guess, one is “too hot for TV” and the other one is “just right for the censors”.

“We have two options and they’re both absolutely ‘GoDaddy-esque,’” Go Daddy chief executive officer and founder Bob Parsons said in a statement. “They are fun, edgy and slightly inappropriate; surely network censors will have a sense of humor, people could use a good laugh these days.”

Come on GoDaddy, I was behind you the first year, waited for the encore the second year – but after that I think you have run this idea into the ground.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Now for some of the weirdest (and possibly greatest) web hosting names just just never got off the ground…

Perfect Toilet Hosting – The name was suppose to inspire downloads and 5th grade humor, but flushed itself before it got started.

Hamster Dance Hosting – What else were the guys behind the original annoying Internet meme suppose to do? The hook here is they will only host your content if you Rick-roll, claim all your base are belong to us, or have a love for dancing babies.

Tighty Whitey Hosting - For when you want hosting with that secure fit.

Kentucky Fried Hosting – Inspired by the fried chicken king, this web host was unique in fact that promised a free bucket of chicken for every hosting plan you purchased. The bad thing was, sending chicken through US mail ended up with very stinky surprise once it made it to your house a few weeks later.

GoMommy – Well, there is a GoDaddy – so why not a GoMommy? The downfall of GoMommy as a company happened when she caught you trying to register adult domains and told you you’ll go blind if you do it too much.

TWO – Launched as a competitor to 1&1 Hosting, but nobody else got the joke.

What is in a name? Well if you make me giggle like a school girl when I have to say it in public, it could be both a good or a bad thing. It could be considered memorable or it could be considered embarrassing. It all depends on if your glass is half empty or half full.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

We knew the .ME Open Registration response would be tremendous, but it went beyond even what we had expected. As a result, we experienced some system issues in our communication with the registry.

As soon as we became aware of the issue we began taking steps to correct it. It is now resolved. For our customers, if we did not successfully register the domain name requested they will receive a full refund.

Now that the first week’s hype is over, it might be a little easier to search around and see what .me domain names you can register from GoDaddy. Only problem your left with is, are all the good names taken already?

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!
Now before you write me off as being some crazy anti-corporation loon let me explain the web hosting industry’s doomsday scenario.

The Merger Begins

Lets say in this alternate reality, Bob Parsons (the man in charge over at GoDaddy) gets an offer he can’t refuse from the Google team. He decides to sell to Google for (well, insert large dollar amount here) and Google is now the world’s biggest search provider and the world’s biggest domain name register all in one smart business move.

A few months down the road, Google announces it will get into the web hosting game. They have the money, servers and resources to start doing serious web hosting at any given moment now. Some might say they already are with their page creator service – but I don’t really count that as it has yet to even really get any decent buzz. If they needed a base for it, they could always use GoDaddy’s hosting business as a starter. Yes, ladies and gentlemen we now have Google Daddy.

Google Daddy Takes Over Web Hosting

With their two tier plan, you can get unlimited disk space, bandwidth and resources for free. Then they charge you five dollars for a domain name and your web site is up and running. Where is the catch? Well Google’s main business is not search – it is advertising. To pay for the hosting, you will agree to put Google AdSense ads on your web site and split the profits with Google 50/50. They get half of your ad revenue (on top of what they take from AdSense profits already) and you get reliable free hosting.

The End is Upon Us

Over the next few months, web hosts would start to drop like flies. Nobody out there can compete with Google Daddy and in one year or so down the road (after that acquire the Planet, Rackspace and a few other dedicated server hosts) they control seventy-five percent of the hosting market. What Google was just a little over a year back for just search they are now for search, domain registration and web hosting.

That would be the ultimate doomsday scenario that would bring the web hosting world to its knees. Google Daddy controls the three things that pretty much defines the Web as we know it and there is not a major force that can stand in their way.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Lara Haworth is her name and it will be interesting to see what Go Daddy actually does with her. Will any of the other Go Daddy girls be getting the boot?

Speaking of GoDaddy, they seem to be more than happy to help RegisterFly customers swarm over to their services. They are providing a special transfer program for RegisterFly customers who want to move their domains over to Go Daddy. If you want to take them up on the offer, go visit:

https://www.godaddy.com/registerfly

Looks like Go Daddy is the only register out there that is smart enough to see this as a chance to grab some new customers. Two hosting thumbs up to the Go Daddy marketing team for that one.

It is question and answer time. This time around I got an E-mail from Jeffery who wants to know why his password protected folder is not working.

Here is what he had to say.

I love your netcast show and hope I might be able to ask you a question to help resolve a problem I have been hitting lately. I make a small website for my nursing class and have been getting really frustrated trying to get passwords on folders to work with my host, GoDaddy.

He goes on a describes what he has done thus far, and after looking through his E-mail I can not really see where he might be messing the process up. Now for those of you who might want to manually check up on how to do this, I have found a good link giving you the basics here:

+ How To Create a Password Protected Directory

Now since GoDaddy kind of has a heavy hand with these types of services on the hosting accounts, it might try some trial and tribulation to figure things out. Another thing you might check is to see if there is a way to go this via the control panel they provide to you. Since they use their own “GoDaddy” flavored control panel it has been a while since I checked it out, so I am not that familiar with it.

I also ran across this note from GoDaddy themselves – although not sure if it will deliver you what you need.

Last but not least, you could always go with a more “password protected folder” friendly hosting provider. I am surprised the support team wouldn’t at least point you in the right direction on how to do this – that is pretty crummy indeed.

I know I didn’t give you an exact answer but I really do hope this helps!

It looks like last week the folks over at GoDaddy launched a new domain club for folks that purchase a lot of domains. Now if you find yourself in this boat – good news for you, they are offering a ton of services with this deal. For around $90 a year or so – you get:

GoDaddy Launches Domain Club

It looks like last week the folks over at GoDaddy launched a new domain club for folks that purchase a lot of domains. Now if you find yourself in this boat – good news for you, they are offering a ton of services with this deal. For around $90 a year or so – you get:

Cheap Domain Names! Yes, Very Cheap!

Free Domain Parking – With Ads! (so you can rake in some of the green stuff)

Free Membership to GoDaddy’s Domain Auction Service!

Discounted Domain Buy Service – Stalk the domains you really want cheaper!

So is this a deal or steal? Well, I would have to say if you find yourself buying a lot of GoDaddy domains through the year, this service is for you. For those of you who maybe purchase one or two and that is it? This might not be your cup of domain name tea.

RegisterFly About to Get Swatted Down

Speaking of domain names, the folks at RegisterFly are about to get swatted down themselves. Here is some inside information I found at the DomainTools.com Blog.

RegisterFly is in chaos right now. We are hearing reports that private registration in the whois, which consumers thought protected them, may do the opposite. Private registrations shields the identity of who owns the domain, which means the only company that can help you if something goes wrong is your registrar.

With this on top of their recent issues with ICANN – can RegisterFly survive? I have a feeling they are heading straight for that big bug zapper in the sky, but I guess time will tell with this one. I just feel sorry for their customers who are the ones being hit hardest with the proverbial fly swatter.

Taking a peak at what is going on in the Web hosting industry’s news division, the WHIR is reporting:

Domain registrar and Web hosting provider Go Daddy announced on Tuesday it has expanded its sponsorship advertising agreement with Internet television network Revision3 to include all of Revision3 Internet television shows.

I am happy to see that GoDaddy realizes this is a big market that has an audience and it just looking for somebody to toss money at them. Of course, since Revision3 has a few more A-listers and Web celebs, I bet they are getting a better deal that the one GoDaddy tossed my way a few weeks back.

All and all though, I think this is a very good thing for Web content. It is also a big check mark in the ol’ alternative advertising world as well.

“We’ve been happy with our podcast advertising,” says Barb Rechterman, executive VP at Go Daddy. “Promoting Revision3’s new TV network is a natural extension for us. These guys are onto something big. At Go Daddy, we recognize the importance of innovation and the folks at Revision3 are leading the pack.”

This is an audience that is captivated enough to download a show and watch it. They are not going to mind one or two ads jumping in there from time to time. I think it will be only a matter of time before you see more companies like GoDaddy jumping in for this type of marketing and advertising.

Too little, too late is the best review I have found of GoDaddy’s new photo hosting service they launched while the Web Hosting Show was taking a ‘bit of a holiday vacation. Not exactly the impact they wanted to make, but much like GoDaddy’s other services – I have a feeling they just wanted to do it so they could say they offer it.

They are calling the new service Photo Filer, a photo manager that enables users to share photos on the Web. Here is a good description of the service that I found via The WHIR:

Online Photo Filer helps users store and display their images on a specialized Web site, at their own domain name. By registering a personalized Web address, users can give their friends and family an easy address to view their photos. Viewers can order prints in various sizes directly from the application.

There is no doubt this is a good move for GoDaddy. Why? It is because it gives them one more reason you need to buy a domain name from them. Looking at it from the business perspective, it is very key for GoDaddy to keep growing. The bread and butter of GoDaddy is domain names, and if they keep inventing new reasons for you to get your domains from them, they keep the cash rolling in.

Now on the negative side of things, I have to say this has done before and for free at some places. Flickr is a good example of this type of service done right. Do I have to pay to use Flickr’s services? No. Do I? Yes. Flickr won me over with the free services they provide so much I had no problem paying a yearly subscription to get the premium content. Flickr still wins mind share because it is out there free to the public and it gets paid because they offer even more perks that people wish to take advantage of.

If GoDaddy wants Photo Filer to be a success they are going to have to copy a business model that looks much more like Flickr’s does. Don’t just wave premium services over somebody’s head and tell them to snatch it if they can. Give them a taste, give them a reason to come back and then give them a reason to want to pay you – instead of forcing them to pay you.

Oh my goodness, the trees are going to die. The birds are going to stop singing. Google has started to sell domain names!

It seems like a lot of folks out there in the Web hosting industry are claiming that because of this – the sky is going to fall. Personally, I do not see what the big deal is about it.

The argument is that if Google registers your domain names – then they will <strike>own your soul</strike>. No wait, I did not mean it that way. It would mean that they could hold search engine placement over your head though.

Would Google domains do better in Google than regular ones?

Now why is none of this going to happen? It is because Google does not want to be the controller of the Internet. Google wants to be the fast food of the Web hosting industry. A few months back we were told that their page builder and movement into the hosting industry was going to be a big deal. Was it? No. They threw up a WYSIWYG editor and left it at that. Not exactly the most in-depth hosting environment. I have a feeling the domain name registrations are going to be handled much in the same way.

If Google really focused their efforts on domain name registration, it would be more of a threat. Right now though, it sounds like they are not undercutting prices and are not offering anything folks can live without. From what I have read so far, they are reselling domains from GoDaddy and eNom. For $10 a pop, and only offering “.com,” “.net,” “.biz” and “.info.” domain extensions – there is no deal here. I can get it cheaper by going to GoDaddy and eNom themselves.

To read more about this topic, here are a few good resources to check out:

WHIR Blogs – Google Offers $10 Domain Registration

TechCrunch – Google Starts Selling Domains

Lunartics – Reasons for Not Buying a Google Domain

To make this a success, Google will have to find something better than the “Google Apps for Your Domain” to package this with. Unless people just pay because it is Google (and some people will) I doubt they are really going to make any real dent in the market. Google needs to offer a better deal or get out of the way – because they are just cluttering the market and not making it any more competitive.

Web Hosting Headlines

The Web hosting news and headlines are brought to you by Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. The Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide is the place to go to get all the latest Web hosting news from around the globe.

HostMySite.com Attains Microsoft Gold Certified Partner Status

HostMySite.com, a leading Web hosting provider for small and medium-sized businesses, today announced it has attained Gold Certified status in the Microsoft Partner Program with a competency in Networking Infrastructure Solutions and Advanced Infrastructure Solutions, recognizing HostMySite.com’s expertise and total impact in the technology marketplace.

Mitch’s Take: So what is this whole “gold certification” thing? Well, it show they demonstrated expertise with Microsoft technologies and proven ability to meet customers’ needs. Microsoft Gold Certified Partners receive a rich set of benefits, including access, training and support, giving them a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Congrats to HostMySite.com!

HostChart Announces HostMove, A FREE Website Moving Service

In today’s competitive web hosting market, the consumer is more knowledgeable and less afraid of switching web hosting companies. HostMove allows website owners to feel comfortable switching hosting companies. HostChart has found that most people using its directory already have websites but are unhappy with their current hosting provider or plan.

Mitch’s Take: I can’t tell you how well it works, because I haven’t seen the service in action. I can say however that I hope it does work, because moving between Web host to Web host can really be a big pain in your data center.

VeriSign Acquires CallVision

Internet security giant VeriSign announced on Tuesday it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Seattle-based online analysis application developer CallVision.

Mitch’s Take: Sorry for the vocabulary lesson during the news today. CallVision will allow VeriSign to deliver converged electronic bill presentation, payment and customer self-care applications to mobile operators, tier 1 carriers, broadband companies and consumer-brand mobile virtual network operators worldwide.

Do you have some Web hosting news? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Every so often you just need a quick nugget of Web hosting knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own tech news and views Web site, where I tell you what I think about some of the new things coming out of the technology world.

I got an e-mail a few weeks ago from Alex, a Web Hosting Show fan. He writes:

Want to start business hosting web sites in Scotland and to be able to include ecommerce as well. I notice there is huge competition out there, but I really like this kind of business. I suppose I’m looking for an edge. Any info would be appreciated.

Now this could be said to anybody out there wanting to jump into the Web hosting industry, not just Alex. To get into the wild and wacky world of Web hosting you have to bring something to the table that hasn’t ever been seen before. You have to stick out and you have to make yourself known. There are thousands, if not millions, of Web hosts out there, so my best advice would be to find a gimmick that works for you and stick with it. That along with quality services and customer support should take you a long way.

Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Deals and Steals

The Web Hosting Show’s Hosting Deals and Steals are brought to you each and every week by AllHostingDeals.com. AllHostingDeals.com is your number one place to find Web hosting offers too good to be true.

This week’s hosting deal comes from Halfprice Hosting. They are offering:

2GB Disk Space, 100GB Data Transfer

Email: 100 Email boxes, Advanced Anti-SPAM

Statistics: AWStats for Primary Domain, Data Transfer Statistics

Databases: MySQL, PhpMyAdmin

99.99% uptime guarantee!

Now what will this plan cost you? If you pick up on this deal, you won’t have to pay the bill till 2007! For more information on this offer, check out HalfpriceHosting.com.

Have a Web hosting deal or offer that is too good to be true? E-mail me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll tell the folks about it on the next Web Hosting Show podcast.

Mitch’s Hosting Talking Points

All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.

What are Server Side Includes?

Some people might argue the fact if you really need server side includes anymore. The reason for that argument is that PHP and other scripting solutions have become much more powerful than your standard SSI code and commands. Web hosts still boast the fact that they offer SSI on all the hosting plans available. Why do so? What are server side includes?

Read the Rest at Lockergnome’s Web Developers!

Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you would like to hear me cover on the Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Site Design Help, Support and Ideas

All of the Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.

This week’s Web site that needs some help is Mini-Host.com.

I have to say I am happy to see the clean looking layout. Now what you really need is some more text on all the Web pages. Tell me who you are, what you do and why you deliver the better Web hosting experience. You have to remember that these words aren’t just here to fill in space, they are here to sell yourself to the customer. Speaking of customers, the support Web page looks a little confusing. You might try reorganizing things there because it looks like everything was just kind of tossed onto the Web page.

Other than that, it is a great Web site and I wish you all the best luck in the future!

Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you contact me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Web Site of the Week

The Web hosting Web site of the week is brought to you by Banners World. Banners World is the number one place to visit to get all your Web site graphics, banners and designs done.

The Web hosting Web site of the week is The WHIR’s Find a Web Host.

Now we all know that the Web Host Industry Review offers a great news section, and an alright weekly TV show. Did you know they can help you find a Web host as well? The WHIR’s “Find a Host” Web site is very slick indeed. You can hunt for personal Web hosting, dedicated servers, reseller hosting, and more right from the front page.

Give it a shot if you haven’t already, and when you do make sure you let them know that the Web Hosting Show sent you there!

Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Hosting Winners and Losers

The Web hosting winners and losers for the week are brought to you by Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting. Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting is the best e-book out there covering the Web hosting world from head to toe.

This week’s winner of the week is GoDaddy.com.

In life, it is always important to turn negative things that happen to you into positive things. GoDaddy seems to still be getting turned down for another Super Bowl ad this year. So do they go pout in the corner about it? No, they send it out as news via everybody they can talk to. This gets people talking about GoDaddy.com no matter what. Win or lose, GoDaddy is getting attention and attention is priceless.

This week’s biggest loser is GoDaddy.com

I’m tired of hearing about the above winner, and seeing how this is my show, GoDaddy is also the loser of the week for dragging this out to become an even longer event than it has to be. I know, I’m mixed up with my opinions, but hey.. that is why you love me, right?

Do you have a hot tip to share on who might be the next week’s winner or loser of the week? Make sure you drop me an E-mail and let me know about who they are and what they did.

Final Web Hosting Thoughts

That is it for this edition of the Web Hosting Show. Did I forget something? Do you have something to say?

Hello, and welcome yet again to another edition of the world’s number one Web hosting podcast, the Web Hosting Show. This show is supported each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is the number one set of forums out there for Web hosting discussions. Who am I? Why I am the most charismatic man in the Web hosting industry, Mitch Keeler.

This podcast carries all the top Web hosting headlines, talking points, tips and tricks, design help and more. Just think of it as me combing the Web hosting world for the most interesting topics of discussion so you don’t have to. You could kill time by looking up all this information by yourself, but I’d hate to see you have to do that. Instead I’ll promise to deliver you the best the hosting industry has to offer each week. The only thing I ask in return from you is that you just keep coming back.

I just set up my first wireless router last week, so that I could get Online with my new PlayStation Portable. Man do I ever love this device. I am even thinking about making a mobile or PSP version of the Web Hosting Show Web site I love it so much. Do you think I should? One of the best benefits I have found with the PSP is now I can sit in my living room and check my E-mail. I no longer have to walk clear across to the other side of the house to login. Damn do I ever love technology.

Want to know how you can make an impact on this very podcast? That much is easy. All you need to do is drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and let me know your feedback, thoughts, complaints and comments. This show isn’t for me, it is for each and every one of you out there who want to know more about how this wacky world of Web hosting works.

Web Hosting Headlines

The Web hosting news and headlines are brought to you by Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. The Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide is the place to go to get all the latest Web hosting news from around the globe.

Web Services Firm Celebrates Long Haul With MINI Giveaway

FatCow Web Hosting, a leading Web services provider for individuals, creative professionals and small businesses, is celebrating its 7th year in business in a big way by giving away a new MINI Cooper auto, an Apple Mac mini and an iPod mini, along with 25 of its own “MiniMoo” domain hosting accounts (which include a free domain).

The contest is open to both new and current customers. Everyone who joins the FatCow herd during the promotion by signing up a FatCow plan will be automatically entered in the drawing. FatCow is also giving its loyal existing customers an opportunity to enter the contest by referring new accounts or taking advantage of upgrade offers.

Mitch’s Take: Hey giveaways are always a good way to create “buzz” around your services or products. By nature, folks will do a lot to get something for free, so I think this deal from FatCow Web Hosting will do just fine. Congrats guys on 7 years of service!

Level 3 and Cogent to Blame for Thursday’s Internet outage

Thursday a major dispute between two large service providers affected thousands of Internet uses. Level 3 Communications refused to accept excess traffic from their competitors Cogent Communications, causing large sections of the Internet to be unusable and grinded email traffic to a halt.

Mitch’s Take: Well I don’t care who’s side you are on in this dispute, I think both sides were acting a little childish when you consider they are holding up the Internet of all things, over this little fight. This just goes to show you that some folks will not and have not ever grown up.

GoDaddy Offers New Domain Name Appraisal Service

GoDaddy today announced the release of a new domain name appraisal service. The service is split into to categories, express and certified. As the name suggests the Express Domain Appraisal service is quick and easy. With a turn around time of 2 hours or less, Express Appraisal uses five critical factors, placed in a weighted ratings algorithm. The results are posted on a secure Web page which can be shared with third parties.

The Certified Domain Appraisal is slightly longer. Taking about 2 days to complete, the name is reviewed by an appraisal staff. Factors such as length, number of words, number of hyphens, numeric characters, desirability, and top level domain are taken into account when figuring out the estimated value.

Mitch’s Take: Everybody wants to know what they are worth so GoDaddy is smart to jump in on this business as well. I haven’t seen a set of Web hosting forums that didn’t have a thread dedicated to folks giving feedback about a domain name’s worth. We all want to know how desirable we are and I bet many folks would be willing to pay money to know for sure.

This week’s tip is about surviving DDoS attacks. A DDoS attack is a distributed denial of service attack. A type of denial of service attack in which an attacker uses malicious code installed on various computers to attack a single target. An attacker may use this method to have a greater effect on the target than is possible with a single attacking machine. Since I know little to nothing about the topic, I am willing to point you into the direction of somebody who does know about it. I found an article series on WebHostMagazine.com that does a great job at letting you know what you can do to protect yourself and survive one of these horrible attacks. For the most part, this article is for all the Web hosts out there. Who knows? Maybe a few Web hosting clients can learn from this as well.

Web Host Magazine – Surviving DDoS attacks

Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Deals and Steals

The Web Hosting Show’s Hosting Deals and Steals are brought to you each and every week by AllHostingDeals.com. AllHostingDeals.com is your number one place to find Web hosting offers too good to be true.

October 2005 Web Server Survey

This news comes right from Netcraft:

In the October 2005 survey we received responses from 74,409,971 sites, an increase of 2.68 million sites from the September survey. The large gain makes 2005 the strongest year ever for Internet growth, as the web has added 17.5 million sites, easily surpassing the previous annual mark of 16 million during the height of the dot-com boom in 2000.

So are we entering a new hosting bubble? With the growth of blogging and podcasting, and folks becoming tired of free hosting solutions I can see some of the reason for the growth in the Web hosting industry. There are a lot of startups and expansions of old companies going up every single day as well. Right now is an exciting time for the world of Web hosting and I am more than happy to be here to see it all.

It seems like Windows servers are gaining a little more mind share as well. Windows servers gained 0.75 percent, while Apache-based servers fell by 0.67 percent. Linux flavored Web hosting is still the main choice by a long lead right now, but it is nice to see that Windows is moving up by a little at least.

The WHIR Magazine – Digital Edition

It seems like the folks over at the Web Host Industry Review have come out now with a digital version of their Web hosting magazine. Now subscription to the paper version of the magazine is already totally free, so I’m not sure what the folks at the WHIR are gaining by making a digital version of the magazine as well.

Once you open it up, you are brought to a window with navigation and options at the top and the magazine at the bottom. I do have to say seeing all the options are nice, but why not just release it as a PDF file? In any case, it brings the print version of the magazine out where more eyes can learn about the Web hosting world and how it works, so for that I am happy to see it happen.

Go Daddy Commercial

Now I would not really consider myself a media review guy. If I like something, I’ll say I like it. If I don’t like something, I’ll say that I don’t like it. Commercials are just not really on my radar most of the time. With that said, I always like to see what new commercials the folks at GoDaddy come out with. So let me take off my Web hosting guru hat and put on my hat of a commercial reviewer.

What do I think of the new “Internet Only” car wash ad? Oh, is it ever good. Then again, I just really like Candice Michelle. Lets screw the thought of wearing a guru or a commercial reviewer hat. As a red blooded American male, I am telling you this commercial is well worth watching over and over again.

GoDaddy has Candice as the GoDaddy Girl… maybe I need to find a Web Hosting Show Girl? If you are interested, make sure you send all your 8 by 10 photos to mitch@mitchkeeler.com. I can’t promise you money, but I can promise you it would be better than seeing me dress up in drag.

This week’s Web site that needs some help is Jon Kev New York Outlet.

The front page looks nice, but I am seeing a lot of white space between your paragraphs of text. A little white space is good, it gives my eyes a place to rest. Too much can look a little tacky though. Also I’d like to see you stick with the same font type, colors, style and size through all the pages on the Web site. Of course, you can make headlines a little bigger and make them stand out more, but with the fonts and colors changing on every page, it just doesn’t look good.

On the bright side though, I really like the use of the graphics and text on the top half of each of the pages. Usually you see folks just slap a big graphic on top and never come back to it. What people need to realize is that ever inch of that page counts, and no mater if you are doing Web hosting or a Web hosting podcast you need to sell your visitors on the idea of what you are producing.

I wish the folks at Jon Kev New York Outlet the best of luck, and I can’t wait to see how they do in the future.

The Web hosting Web site of the week is SiteGalore.

SiteGalore is one of the most nicest template Web site creation tools out there today. They have had a lot of high marks from everybody from the Web Host Magazine and Buyer’s Guide to the Web Host Industry Review. I am sure their services are not cheap, but I bet they are well worth the money that you will be paying for them. Not sure about them? Try out the demo first, then make up your mind.

Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Final Web Hosting Thoughts

That is it for this week’s show! Make sure you send me your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and ideas via:

One amazing thing I saw this week was a Web server, you know one of those large metal boxes you see in a data center, the size of a head of a match. It is called the IPic and it really does have to be seen to be believed.

IPic – A Match Head Sized Web-Server

Here is what they have to say about it on the Web site:

The single chip computer in the above picture runs the IPic web-server, the world’s tiniest implementation of a TCP/IP stack and a HTTP web-server. The chip above is a complete micro-computer, and it includes all components of a complete computer on a single tiny micro-chip (this includes the CPU (central processing unit), memory, serial port interface circuitry, and clock oscillator).

So is this a sign from the future? Instead of having massive data centers that have rows and rows of servers, will we be able to store a server under our desk? I’d love to hear your thoughts good or bad on the matter. Send them in to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and if I get enough of them, I might read the best ones on next week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Why are we here though? This is a Web hosting podcast, a Web hosting radio show, it doesn’t really matter what you call it. What does matter is that you listen.

Web Hosting Headlines

The Web hosting news and headlines are brought to you by The Web Host Industry Review. The Web Host Industry Review is the place to go to get all the latest Web hosting news from around the globe.

Hosting.com Adds Advanced Backup Tool

Web hosting provider Hosting.com announced on Monday it is now offering an advanced online backup solution that enables users to proactively prepare for data emergencies.

Mitch’s Take: There is nothing more important than keeping a good backup of your Web site or server no mater the size. Bad things can happen anytime, and it is nice to know if they do, you are ready to get yourself back Online in no time flat.

Go Daddy Giving Away Free Email Accounts

Domain registrar and Web hosting provider Go Daddy announced on Tuesday that it would give away a free Economy Email account for free with any domain name purchased, transferred or renewed.

Mitch’s Take: This is called taking the rug out from under your competition and beating them over the head with it. Yet another extra service you can get when getting your domain name at Go Daddy.

BitTorrent Picks 365 Main Web Hosting

Data center provider 365 Main announced on Wednesday that content distribution company BitTorrent has selected 365 Main’s data center to host its company infrastructure.

Mitch’s Take: Congrats to 365 Main for picking up this big account. I’m a big fan of BitTorrent. It just makes it so much easier to download content out there. Now you do have some people out there using it for “bad purposes”, but if used right then there is nothing scary about BitTorrent feeds.

This week’s tip is more of a tease than anything. The newest edition of the Web Host Industry Review magazine is out. Have you gotten your copy yet? Click here to subscribe for free!

In this issue the main topic looks to be “Hosting from the Beach”. The idea that wireless communications technology enables Web hosts to work from just about anywhere. This is totally true these days. Thanks to Wi-Fi, Web hosting workers and Web hosts can do their work just about anywhere. Now I don’t know if I would tell any clients I was answering their help desk ticket while on the toilet, but it is possible.

So make sure you subscribe to the Web Host Industry Review, it is totally free, packed full of information and worth checking out!

Do you have a Web hosting tip you’d like to share? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and who knows? It could be included on the very next edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Thoughts, Views and Ideas

All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are brought to you by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.

AIT CEO Gives Out His Phone Number

It looks like AIT has rolled out a new list of features this week. That isn’t the only thing they have been making public though. They have also listed on their Web site the CEO’s phone number and E-mail address. Now is this just another public relations stunt? Maybe.

I don’t care though if it is a PR stunt or not. There is nothing better than seeing a CEO or owner of a Web hosting company getting down and dirty with the “grunt work”. They have as much to lose or gain with a good or bad job done. So why shouldn’t they get in there and do a little work?

Those Web hosting owners that just sit back and watch the worker ants run your business, you should be ashamed of yourself. I would enjoy being hosted more by the CEO who works rather than the CEO who spends his day playing golf and watching the money roll in.

To test this out, I’m going to E-mail Clarence E. Briggs, the CEO of AIT myself to see how quickly he can respond. Maybe I can even get him to come onto the Web Hosting Show? We will see.

Run Your Own DSL/Cable Web Server

I know we have all had the dream to run our own Web server right? Well, maybe not everybody, but I do know there are a few server geeks out there. Check out dslwebserver.com for everything you need to know about getting started, up and running.

They have a great list of introduction material, requirements and a step by step process to check when you are getting things set up. There are also forums, articles, links, and more. So feeling a little geeky today? Check out the site and let me know what you think.

Host Legal Launches New Legal Protection Site

The folks at Host Legal launched a new Web site this week.

The Web site, hostlegal.net promises to provided the hosting industry with help on legal forms and documents. I’ve talked before on the Web Hosting Show about how great of a service the folks at Host Legal provide, and these new additions promise to further that great service. If you want more information, please check out hostlegal.net, send them an E-mail to sales@hostlegal.com or call them up at (313) 527-7480. When you do, make sure you tell them that you heard about them on the Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Show T-Shirts

The Web Hosting Show store was launched this week. Now you too can own your very own Web Hosting Show t-shirt, mouse pad or mug! The link to the store can be found on the Web Hosting Show’s Web site. While you’re there check out the photo of me modeling one of the t-shirts myself. See, even I stand behind my products.

Web Hosting Show Online Store

Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you would like to hear me cover on the Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of the Web Hosting Show.

Web Site Design Help

All of the Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.

This week’s Web site that needs some help is Wm-home.com.

As a place for Web masters to come and discuss various topics, I’m not sure if I get that impression from the front page. You have the standard form layout, which is good.. but there is no extra features that are screaming at me to check out. At the top of the forums, I’d do a better description of what the forums are about and who do you expect to post there.

Remember with every Web site that is out there today, you are in a fight. You are in a fight with millions of other Web sites. A fight for not just viewership, but for constant eyeballs. You want people to come back, discuss and love being on your forums.

Other than that, it is a good start and I wish you all the luck in the future with your Web master discussions.

This week’s Web hosting Web site of the week is Web Host Magazine.

Web Host Magazine is yet another one of those “catch-all” Web hosting Web sites. They have monthly awards, they have editors picks, they have directories, they have just about everything you would ever need or want from the wild and wacky world of Web hosting.

One of my favorite features is the Editor’s Choice award. You can find a plethora of new and exciting Web sites to help you out listed there. The down side of that is that they have yet to give the Web Hosting Show an award! I think we deserve it, if nothing else.

So check out Web Host Magazine and when you do, let them know that the Web Hosting Show sent you there.

Skype: mitchkeeler

Adult hosting taxes, Linux awards, and an interview with yours truly! A Web hosting podcast could not be more fun! How about if I told you I would go over the latest hosting headlines? Some of my own Web hosting thoughts and ideas? What if I told you I had a Web hosting site of the week you can not live without?! You would probably say that has got to be one heck of a show. I’d say it is the Web Hosting Show, podcast 24.

Download the Web Hosting Show!

Running Time: 22 minutes | File Size: 5.16 MB

Welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the one and only voice of the Web hosting world. The Web Hosting Show is brought to you each and every week by the fine folks over at Web Hosting Chat. Web Hosting Chat is your number one place for Web hosting discussions. Who am I? Why I am the one-man PR team, Mitch Keeler.

I have two exciting ‘bit of news for the Web Hosting Show fans out there.

The first one is that we have now been added into the lineup of shows for TechPodcasts.com. Right now we are in there with some elite podcasters. Some folks might even go as far and call them the best of the best. I have to say it is an honor to be mentioned there and hopefully we will not let them down.

The second personal headline of mine I would like to share is the fact that we were the first official folks to get signed for BX Radio’s Cool Cast Radio this week. It was made official on the BX Radio blog and I posted something about it last week as well.

It is a new month, so that means you have to go visit PodcastAlley.com again and vote for the Web Hosting Show. Every vote counts, so vote early and vote at least once a month! You can also subscribe to the show via iTunes and Odeo as well. We are still one of the highest rated podcasts over at Podcast Directory, but it wouldn’t hurt to go rate us there as well.

For the new folks out there, each and every week we cover the Web hosting world from head to toe. We give Web hosting clients what they need to know. We tell Web hosts what they should be doing. We are like the middle man for you and the Web hosting industry. There’s no need to learn any jargon or read any books. We are here to make sense of it all each and every week. So let us get things started with a few hosting headlines.

Web Hosting Headlines

The Web hosting news and headlines are brought to you by The Web Host Industry Review. The Web Host Industry Review is the place to go to get all the latest Web hosting news from around the globe.

Adult Sites Face New Tax Legislation

United States Senator Blanche Lincoln, a Democrat from Arkansas, said last week that he would introduce legislation that places a 25 percent excise tax on all online adult transactions, according to reports.

Mitch’s Thoughts: I could be wrong, but this just seems like another way to punish the Online adult entertainment business. Then again, when you want to get money, it is always easier to tax “vices” such as smoking, alcohol, and adult entertainment.

Virtuozzo for Linux an Award Finalist

Web hosting automation software developer SWsoft said on Wednesday that its Virtuozzo for Linux solution is a finalist for the LinuxWorld Product Excellence award.

Mitch’s Thoughts: Congrats are in order for SWsoft! This just goes to show you that at least in the Web hosting world, that Linux really plays a bigger part than Windows. In my own opinion, I think that Linux is just a better platform for Web hosting servers. Of course if there are any Windows server admins that want to come and convince me otherwise, contact me and I will get you on the Web Hosting Show.

Go Daddy Unveils Bundled Packages

Web hosting provider and domain registrar Go Daddy announced on Thursday that it had launched a new business solutions store, which offers bundled packages of Go Daddy products and services at a 30 percent discount off regular retail pricing.

Mitch’s Thoughts: Week in and week out it seems like Go Daddy is always pushing something new out into the marketplace. Could this be why they are the number one domain name registar out there today? I think so. The way thinks are going, I should just go ahead and dedicate a segment of this show to Go Daddy news. I’m sure Bob Parsons is a Web Hosting Show fan! If not, he should be.

Do you have some Web hosting news? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Every so often you just need a quick nugget of knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own personal writing space where I go one on one with you everyday with some of my Web hosting articles, random postings and updates on my current projects.

This week’s Web hosting tip is to follow how your Web hosting company is doing inside of the Web hosting world. Now most people do not care what their Web hosting companies are doing, as long as their Web site is up and running. You might be interested in knowing if your Web hosting company has a bad reputation or a good reputation though.

For an example, Web Host Directory has a set of monthly awards they give out every month. To the Web hosting clients out there, can you say that your Web hosting company has won any awards for their services? To the Web hosts out there, when was the last time you applied for or got an award for yourself?

Not only do these type of awards make for great PR relations, they also help spread the word about your own hosting services. So think outside the box and check to see how your Web hosting company is measuring up in the real world.

Do you have a Web hosting tip? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Thoughts, Views and Ideas

All of my Web hosting thoughts, views and ideas are sponsored by Data Center Talk. Data Center Talk is the best set of forums on the Earth about the world of Web hosting data centers.

Want to Complain About Your Web Host?

One interesting Web site I ran across in this past week was MyBadHost.com. They are taking a very interesting approach to dealing as the middle man when it comes to fights between Web host and Web hosting client. The following was taken from a thread about MyBadHost.com written over at the BrowseHosts.com forums:

We take reports on bad web host and do a complete investigation. We try to help you negotiate with your host to get you your domain or refunds. We as well sign up for web hosting at places that offer unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space to actually see if we can add as many files as we can to use up about 10 GB.

As I said before, it is very interesting to see and I hope they do well in the long run.

Who is the Oldest Web Hosting Company?

I can not say I have ever spent much time wondering about this myself, but once again turning to the Web Hosting Chat forums have gotten me interested in something yet again.

According to etechsupport over at the Web Hosting Chat forums:

I think WorldCom Canada was the first commercial Internet access provider in 1991.

The World Wide Web is invented 1991. It has taken 40 years to reach that stage starting from late 1950, You should go through the brief history of internet.

In 1982 TCP/IP was established as the protocol for ARPANET. This provided one of the first definitions of an internet as a connected set of networks using TCP/IP, but defining ‘the Internet’ as all connected TCP/IP internets.

The first International WWW Conference was organized at CERN in Geneva in May 1994.

Is this wrong? If you want to argue the point, be sure to drop me an e-mail or send me a voice mail via Skype and I’d love to hear what you have to say.

HostNews.com Interview With Mitch Keeler

I think I mentioned it last week when I said that HostNews.com is becoming one of my favorite Web hosting resources Online. They have everything but the kitchen sink and seem to be adding more as time goes by. They even interviewed me about the Web Hosting Show, some of my other projects, the world of podcasting and whole lot more. So please, read the interview and let me know what you think!

Here is a link to the HostNews.com Interview!

I have really got to talk Matt (the guy who runs things over there) to come onto the Web Hosting Show so I can turn the tables on him.

Do you have a Web hosting topic of discussion you’d like to hear me cover on The Web Hosting Show? Then make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

All of The Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.

The Web site we are taking a look at this week is HostingOption.

All the graphics and the standards of the layout look really great and really professional. The first thing that jumps out at me though is that your navigation is hard to find. You might try making the navigation for the page a little bigger and a little bolder. That way folks will know how to get to the next Web page.

On your front page, you have a few paragraphs of text, which is good, but I would space them out a little more. Right now thinks are so tight in there it makes that text hard to read. You might also work on your grammar some. I’m not sure if it is poor grammar or you are more worried about writing for the search engines than you are writing for human eyes.

I see a few things missing from the Web page that I would expect to see from a Web host. Where is the support page? Where’s your address? Company phone number? There are just some things that are expected to be shown by a Web hosting company. Other than that, it looks like a good start and I can not wait to see what you do with the Web site in the next few weeks!

Do you need some help with your Web site design? Would you like me to just let you know what it is you could do to make your Web presence that much better? Make sure you send me an E-mail to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get your questions answered and your Web site reviewed on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.

Web Hosting Web Site of the Week

The Web hosting Web site of the week is brought to you by Banners World. Banners World is the number one place to visit to get all your Web site graphics, banners and designs done.

I have seen plenty of Web sites that let you rate how hot you are. I have seen some that let you rate how hot your pet is. I have even seen a few that let you rate how great your Web hosting provider is. NameBays.com is the first place I have ever seen that lets you rate your domain name registar though.

The idea is simple, you are looking for a domain name and you want to know which registar is the best one to sign with. What if there was a Web site that made the selection process easy? What if a Web site that looked at all the domain name registars and gave you a rank and one to five star review?

That is what NameBays.com is doing right now. From price, ease of use, support and features you get reviews not from some guy typing them out. No, they have real customers come back to review their own domain name registars.

So what took so long for this type of Web site to get out there and into the market? I have no idea. Check it out though and let them know that I sent you there! If you have any suggestions, feedback or anything else you’d like to share, I will be sure that the folks behind NameBays.com hear what you have to say.

Do you have a Web site that deserves to be the next Web hosting Web site of the week? Make sure you send it to mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll try to get it on the next episode of The Web Hosting Show.
