.ME a Big Fail So Far?

1216558906_188 You may have caught wind of some of the .me buzz last week, as GoDaddy started taking registrations for them for $20 a year (and you have to sign up for two years, so that should really be $40).  According to Mashable.com several people were claiming to have registered the same domain name, which is going to be a disappointment for some.  If eight people say they registered it, that will leave seven people really unhappy about the whole ordeal.

GoDaddy has also released this response to the claims that there was some wacky stuff going on during the first day of .me domain name registrations:

We knew the .ME Open Registration response would be tremendous, but it went beyond even what we had expected. As a result, we experienced some system issues in our communication with the registry.

As soon as we became aware of the issue we began taking steps to correct it. It is now resolved.  For our customers, if we did not successfully register the domain name requested they will receive a full refund.

Now that the first week’s hype is over, it might be a little easier to search around and see what .me domain names you can register from GoDaddy.  Only problem your left with is, are all the good names taken already?

Google Daddy Would Kill Competitive Web Hosting

google-web-hosting In my opinion, the worst thing that could ever happen for the web hosting industry as a whole would be if Google bought GoDaddy. Now before you write me off as being some crazy anti-corporation loon let me explain the web hosting industry’s doomsday scenario.

The Merger Begins

Lets say in this alternate reality, Bob Parsons (the man in charge over at GoDaddy) gets an offer he can’t refuse from the Google team. He decides to sell to Google for (well, insert large dollar amount here) and Google is now the world’s biggest search provider and the world’s biggest domain name register all in one smart business move.

A few months down the road, Google announces it will get into the web hosting game. They have the money, servers and resources to start doing serious web hosting at any given moment now. Some might say they already are with their page creator service – but I don’t really count that as it has yet to even really get any decent buzz. If they needed a base for it, they could always use GoDaddy’s hosting business as a starter. Yes, ladies and gentlemen we now have Google Daddy.

Google Daddy Takes Over Web Hosting

With their two tier plan, you can get unlimited disk space, bandwidth and resources for free. Then they charge you five dollars for a domain name and your web site is up and running. Where is the catch? Well Google’s main business is not search – it is advertising. To pay for the hosting, you will agree to put Google AdSense ads on your web site and split the profits with Google 50/50. They get half of your ad revenue (on top of what they take from AdSense profits already) and you get reliable free hosting.

The End is Upon Us

Over the next few months, web hosts would start to drop like flies. Nobody out there can compete with Google Daddy and in one year or so down the road (after that acquire the Planet, Rackspace and a few other dedicated server hosts) they control seventy-five percent of the hosting market. What Google was just a little over a year back for just search they are now for search, domain registration and web hosting.

That would be the ultimate doomsday scenario that would bring the web hosting world to its knees. Google Daddy controls the three things that pretty much defines the Web as we know it and there is not a major force that can stand in their way.

New Go Daddy Girl and Register Fly Relief

Is Go Daddy searching for yet another Go Daddy girl? The WHIR is reporting the Go Daddy announced on Friday it has discovered a new girl to add to the company’s roster of spokesmodels at Daytona’s Bike Week celebration in Daytona, Florida.

Lara Haworth is her name and it will be interesting to see what Go Daddy actually does with her. Will any of the other Go Daddy girls be getting the boot?

Speaking of GoDaddy, they seem to be more than happy to help RegisterFly customers swarm over to their services. They are providing a special transfer program for RegisterFly customers who want to move their domains over to Go Daddy. If you want to take them up on the offer, go visit:

https://www.godaddy.com/registerfly

Looks like Go Daddy is the only register out there that is smart enough to see this as a chance to grab some new customers. Two hosting thumbs up to the Go Daddy marketing team for that one.

Password Protected Folders

It is question and answer time. This time around I got an E-mail from Jeffery who wants to know why his password protected folder is not working.

Here is what he had to say.

I love your netcast show and hope I might be able to ask you a question to help resolve a problem I have been hitting lately. I make a small website for my nursing class and have been getting really frustrated trying to get passwords on folders to work with my host, GoDaddy.

He goes on a describes what he has done thus far, and after looking through his E-mail I can not really see where he might be messing the process up. Now for those of you who might want to manually check up on how to do this, I have found a good link giving you the basics here:

+ How To Create a Password Protected Directory

Now since GoDaddy kind of has a heavy hand with these types of services on the hosting accounts, it might try some trial and tribulation to figure things out. Another thing you might check is to see if there is a way to go this via the control panel they provide to you. Since they use their own “GoDaddy” flavored control panel it has been a while since I checked it out, so I am not that familiar with it.

I also ran across this note from GoDaddy themselves – although not sure if it will deliver you what you need.

Last but not least, you could always go with a more “password protected folder” friendly hosting provider. I am surprised the support team wouldn’t at least point you in the right direction on how to do this – that is pretty crummy indeed.

I know I didn’t give you an exact answer but I really do hope this helps!

Domain Name Ups and Downs

Here are some of the latest hosting headlines to catch my attention and eyeballs.

GoDaddy Launches Domain Club

It looks like last week the folks over at GoDaddy launched a new domain club for folks that purchase a lot of domains. Now if you find yourself in this boat – good news for you, they are offering a ton of services with this deal. For around $90 a year or so – you get:

  • Cheap Domain Names! Yes, Very Cheap!
  • Free Domain Parking – With Ads! (so you can rake in some of the green stuff)
  • Free Membership to GoDaddy’s Domain Auction Service!
  • Discounted Domain Buy Service – Stalk the domains you really want cheaper!

So is this a deal or steal? Well, I would have to say if you find yourself buying a lot of GoDaddy domains through the year, this service is for you. For those of you who maybe purchase one or two and that is it? This might not be your cup of domain name tea.

RegisterFly About to Get Swatted Down

Speaking of domain names, the folks at RegisterFly are about to get swatted down themselves. Here is some inside information I found at the DomainTools.com Blog.

RegisterFly is in chaos right now. We are hearing reports that private registration in the whois, which consumers thought protected them, may do the opposite. Private registrations shields the identity of who owns the domain, which means the only company that can help you if something goes wrong is your registrar.

With this on top of their recent issues with ICANN – can RegisterFly survive? I have a feeling they are heading straight for that big bug zapper in the sky, but I guess time will tell with this one. I just feel sorry for their customers who are the ones being hit hardest with the proverbial fly swatter.

Revision3 and GoDaddy Deal

Taking a peak at what is going on in the Web hosting industry’s news division, the WHIR is reporting:

Domain registrar and Web hosting provider Go Daddy announced on Tuesday it has expanded its sponsorship advertising agreement with Internet television network Revision3 to include all of Revision3 Internet television shows.

I am happy to see that GoDaddy realizes this is a big market that has an audience and it just looking for somebody to toss money at them. Of course, since Revision3 has a few more A-listers and Web celebs, I bet they are getting a better deal that the one GoDaddy tossed my way a few weeks back.

All and all though, I think this is a very good thing for Web content. It is also a big check mark in the ol’ alternative advertising world as well.

“We’ve been happy with our podcast advertising,” says Barb Rechterman, executive VP at Go Daddy. “Promoting Revision3′s new TV network is a natural extension for us. These guys are onto something big. At Go Daddy, we recognize the importance of innovation and the folks at Revision3 are leading the pack.”

This is an audience that is captivated enough to download a show and watch it. They are not going to mind one or two ads jumping in there from time to time. I think it will be only a matter of time before you see more companies like GoDaddy jumping in for this type of marketing and advertising.
