GoDaddy Does Photo Hosting

Too little, too late is the best review I have found of GoDaddy’s new photo hosting service they launched while the Web Hosting Show was taking a ‘bit of a holiday vacation. Not exactly the impact they wanted to make, but much like GoDaddy’s other services – I have a feeling they just wanted to do it so they could say they offer it.

They are calling the new service Photo Filer, a photo manager that enables users to share photos on the Web. Here is a good description of the service that I found via The WHIR:

Online Photo Filer helps users store and display their images on a specialized Web site, at their own domain name. By registering a personalized Web address, users can give their friends and family an easy address to view their photos. Viewers can order prints in various sizes directly from the application.

There is no doubt this is a good move for GoDaddy. Why? It is because it gives them one more reason you need to buy a domain name from them. Looking at it from the business perspective, it is very key for GoDaddy to keep growing. The bread and butter of GoDaddy is domain names, and if they keep inventing new reasons for you to get your domains from them, they keep the cash rolling in.

Now on the negative side of things, I have to say this has done before and for free at some places. Flickr is a good example of this type of service done right. Do I have to pay to use Flickr’s services? No. Do I? Yes. Flickr won me over with the free services they provide so much I had no problem paying a yearly subscription to get the premium content. Flickr still wins mind share because it is out there free to the public and it gets paid because they offer even more perks that people wish to take advantage of.

If GoDaddy wants Photo Filer to be a success they are going to have to copy a business model that looks much more like Flickr’s does. Don’t just wave premium services over somebody’s head and tell them to snatch it if they can. Give them a taste, give them a reason to come back and then give them a reason to want to pay you – instead of forcing them to pay you.

Google Does Domains

Oh my goodness, the trees are going to die. The birds are going to stop singing. Google has started to sell domain names!

It seems like a lot of folks out there in the Web hosting industry are claiming that because of this – the sky is going to fall. Personally, I do not see what the big deal is about it.

The argument is that if Google registers your domain names – then they will own your soul. No wait, I did not mean it that way. It would mean that they could hold search engine placement over your head though.

Would Google domains do better in Google than regular ones?

Now why is none of this going to happen? It is because Google does not want to be the controller of the Internet. Google wants to be the fast food of the Web hosting industry. A few months back we were told that their page builder and movement into the hosting industry was going to be a big deal. Was it? No. They threw up a WYSIWYG editor and left it at that. Not exactly the most in-depth hosting environment. I have a feeling the domain name registrations are going to be handled much in the same way.

If Google really focused their efforts on domain name registration, it would be more of a threat. Right now though, it sounds like they are not undercutting prices and are not offering anything folks can live without. From what I have read so far, they are reselling domains from GoDaddy and eNom. For $10 a pop, and only offering “.com,” “.net,” “.biz” and “.info.” domain extensions – there is no deal here. I can get it cheaper by going to GoDaddy and eNom themselves.

To read more about this topic, here are a few good resources to check out:

To make this a success, Google will have to find something better than the “Google Apps for Your Domain” to package this with. Unless people just pay because it is Google (and some people will) I doubt they are really going to make any real dent in the market. Google needs to offer a better deal or get out of the way – because they are just cluttering the market and not making it any more competitive.

4. I wish for GoDaddy.com to offer a better Web hosting experience.

I have been nothing but disappointed with my hosting experience at GoDaddy.com. I had heard good things from folks in the past about it, so I had to try it out to see what all the fuss was about. I will give them a little credit, as far as bandwidth, disk space and uptime goes, I am very happy. Where I have a problem is the control panel and missing features. The control panel that GoDaddy.com uses sucks, there is no denying that. It is one thing to rule a market, it is another thing to be the best thing in the market. GoDaddy.com might be on the way to ruling the virtual Web hosting world, but they are by far not the best option out there. Continue Reading →
