On this podcast I was thrilled to get to have a sit down chat with Host Search’s Web Editor John Hughes. Because of the Web Hosting Show, I have known John for a few years as one of the public voices and go to guys for Host Search. He really is one of the “good guys” in the hosting industry.

Host Search is one of the most established, most influential and most widely respected web hosting directory on the Web. Just by viewing their front page you can see they tackle everything from hosting interviews, to news and discussions.

There is a lot of good quality content there for you to comb through no matter if you are a web hosting guru or just a guy that got his first web site. I like Host Search because it is a resource everybody can get something out of.

On this week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show podcast I got to talk with Troy Augustine the President and CEO of iNet Interactive on and about the web industry. From iNet’s reputation to advice on how to grow a bigger brand we covered a lot of topics in a short amount of time.

For some of those who might not be familiar with iNet Interactive I thought I would whip up a short list of some of the biggest Web sites they own.

What are some of the areas of the Web that iNet Interactive covers? Here are some of the more popular web sites that are under the iNet network:

• WebHostingTalk.com – The biggest set of forums on and about the web hosting industry. Claimed to be the “largest web hosting discussion forum” and I have to say, I can not find one that is any bigger.
• HotScripts.com – HotScripts.com is one of the best places out there on the Web to find scripts and and applications for your web site written in many different scripting lanuages.
• OC Forums – The Overclockers Forum is the second largest computer hardware discussion community on the Internet.

Drift 2 Hosting Interview

I drift back and forth from the real world to the hosting world all the time. I don’t think that is what Greg Pruitt had in mind when starting Drift 2 Hosting. I recently had a chance to talk to him about Drift 2 Hosting as a hosting experience, as well as a few topics about the hosting industry itself.

I recently had a chance to talk with Aaron Phillips, the Vice President of FastServers.Net. I wanted to get some of his insight on and about the world of Web hosting. FastServers.net is one of the best dedicated server hosts I have seen in a long time. They provide great customer service and they do so with a smile.

I recently had the chance to do a little “Q and A” with Podcast FM’s Fergus Hadley. Fergus is a Web designer and developer, specialising in dynamic PHP applications. He is also responsible for Pi Internet’s Homebuild, a richly-featured, template-based content management system marketed to those on a tight budget who want a do-it-yourself website without the necessity of learning web design/development.

Well it is a new day and now we have a new journey to follow in the same place that Jonathan once told his Web hosting story. This time around it is a new face, a new company and a new story that will be told. The guy that was behind putting together the idea of the first start up blog, Johnder Perez, is now stepping into the spotlight to tell his story about starting up a Web hosting business.

Just like last time around I think there should be plenty of content to cover there. There are a million and one different things you need to think about when starting up any company or project. What Johnder delivers is an inside view of what is really going on behind the curtains.

So who is Johnder and why should you care about his story? I have to say, when it comes to Web hosting articles and inside information, Johnder is one of the most gifted story tellers I have found inside of the Web hosting industry. He can deliver the content in a way that is unique to anybody else. Well, at least anybody else inside the wild and wacky world of Web hosting. Hopefully in the future I can get Johnder onto the show to talk about this topic and the many others he has his fingers stuck in.

Enfinity was first established in 2000 by Matthew McReavy as Yurgo Internet Services. In 2004, Yurgo was renamed Enfinity Solutions, as it stands ever since. In mid-2005, Anthony and CJ Scaminaci acquired ownership of Enfinity from Mr. McReavy, and have been going strong ever since.

Mitch: The first thing I noticed about your Web site was your special offer. “Move your website to Lunarpages from another web host and sign up for a new annual plan. We will add the time remaining from your existing pre-paid web hosting account to your new Lunarpages plan (up to 11 months) and we’ll even transfer your site for you.” How much success have you had with that so far?

Amy: Although this program was only recently established, we’ve seen a lot of success with it. We were looking for a viable solution to allow customers unhappy with their existing host to move to a more positive Lunarpages experience without having to forfeit their investment.

Mitch: I see that Lunarpages has a nice set of forums as well. How important do you think the community aspect of Web hosting is to any Web hosting company out there?

Amy: Lunarpages has a unique, thriving community that is essential to our industry. We rely on this community for support, feedback and referrals. Over 50% of our existing support staff started out as customers contributing in our support forums at http://lunarforums.com and via chat. I can’t think of a better testimonial than that.

Mitch: You are one of the few Web hosts I’ve seen that have job advertisements on the Web site. Are you looking to pick up people from just your location or are you looking to gain talent from anywhere out there?

Amy: We are looking for quality personnel who want to work for an exciting, stable company. We do advertise for employment elsewhere but a large portion of our applicants found out about us by looking for hosting, already have hosting with us or are surfing.

Over 50% of our existing support staff started out as customers contributing in our support forums at http://lunarforums.com and via chat. We have available positions at out La Habra Corporate office, our downtown Los Angeles data center and we also have telecommuting positions available for customer support, sales and system administration.

Mitch: What is your company history exactly with Add2Net Corporation?

Amy: Lunarpages Web Hosting is a property of the privately held corporation, Add2Net, Inc., founded in 2000. For more information regarding Add2Net, Inc., please see http://add2net.com.

Mitch: What aspects of Web hosting does Lunarpages offer than some other Web hosts might not?

Amy: Lunarpages focuses on customer service which is unique to our company. We have implemented extensive systems and processes to ensure our customers have the best possible hosting experience from our first line support through our Quality Assurance.

In addition to our support, our plans include a wealth of easy to use scripts and tools to help the customer build a dynamic, feature rich site. We are also one of the few affordable web hosts that have JSP available.

Mitch: From sign up to finish, how long does it take for the average Web hosting order to go through to where the client has the login information in his or her own hands?

Amy: We verify all new hosting contracts by a variety of means that may include telephone verification. We have staff calling customers seven days per week to ensure a quick turn around time.

The reason we make this security check is to protect our customers and cut down on fraud. The average verification time is a few minutes.

Mitch: Have you thought about adding any RSS (Really Simple Syndication) features to your Web site? As an example, giving your clients and RSS feed so that they know when the company news page has been updated.

Amy: We have released our new Customer Account Page (CAP) that has the ability to add announcements and latest news. We intend to use this as a means of contacting our customer base for security issues, latest upgrades, account specific information, plan changes and server issues.

We will also consider any suggestion our customers have as they are our most valuable resource in determining what features should be added.

Mitch: How important do you think it is for a Web hosting company to get Better Business Bureau certification and why?

Amy: I think it is important for any company to get BBB certification because it lends credibility and shows the company cares about their standing with the public. As a company that prides itself on superior customer support, it is essential we continue to have an A rating with the BBB.

Mitch: What feature or in which direction to you see Lunarpages expanding to in the future?

Amy: We are currently developing many new features as well as new products based on feedback we’ve obtained from our customers. Our latest news section of our site found at http://lunarpages.com/news.php has our newest developments. Also our forums at http://lunarforums.com outlines some of our latest developments.

We do not generally disclose the projects currently under development until they are ready to be released. However, we always welcome feedback as to what our customers would like to see offered. All customers may email feedback@lunarpages.com with their suggestions. These are reviewed daily by upper management.

Mitch: If somebody out there was looking for a new Web host today, why would you say that Lunarpages should be the Web host that they pick?

Amy: We care. We focus on creating a positive hosting experience for our customers. This includes ensuring we have the best technology available for uptime and backup as well as expert personnel to assist our customers. Adult Sites Face New Tax Legislation

United States Senator Blanche Lincoln, a Democrat from Arkansas, said last week that he would introduce legislation that places a 25 percent excise tax on all online adult transactions, according to reports.

Mitch’s Thoughts: I could be wrong, but this just seems like another way to punish the Online adult entertainment business. Then again, when you want to get money, it is always easier to tax “vices” such as smoking, alcohol, and adult entertainment.

Virtuozzo for Linux an Award Finalist

Web hosting automation software developer SWsoft said on Wednesday that its Virtuozzo for Linux solution is a finalist for the LinuxWorld Product Excellence award.

Mitch’s Thoughts: Congrats are in order for SWsoft! This just goes to show you that at least in the Web hosting world, that Linux really plays a bigger part than Windows. In my own opinion, I think that Linux is just a better platform for Web hosting servers. Of course if there are any Windows server admins that want to come and convince me otherwise, contact me and I will get you on the Web Hosting Show.

Go Daddy Unveils Bundled Packages

Web hosting provider and domain registrar Go Daddy announced on Thursday that it had launched a new business solutions store, which offers bundled packages of Go Daddy products and services at a 30 percent discount off regular retail pricing.

Mitch’s Thoughts: Week in and week out it seems like Go Daddy is always pushing something new out into the marketplace. Could this be why they are the number one domain name registar out there today? I think so. The way thinks are going, I should just go ahead and dedicate a segment of this show to Go Daddy news. I’m sure Bob Parsons is a Web Hosting Show fan! If not, he should be.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Every so often you just need a quick nugget of knowledge. The Web hosting tip of the week is brought to you by Mitchelaneous. Mitchelaneous is my own personal writing space where I go one on one with you everyday with some of my Web hosting articles, random postings and updates on my current projects.

This week’s Web hosting tip is to follow how your Web hosting company is doing inside of the Web hosting world. Now most people do not care what their Web hosting companies are doing, as long as their Web site is up and running. You might be interested in knowing if your Web hosting company has a bad reputation or a good reputation though.

For an example, Web Host Directory has a set of monthly awards they give out every month. To the Web hosting clients out there, can you say that your Web hosting company has won any awards for their services? To the Web hosts out there, when was the last time you applied for or got an award for yourself?

Not only do these type of awards make for great PR relations, they also help spread the word about your own hosting services. So think outside the box and check to see how your Web hosting company is measuring up in the real world.

Want to Complain About Your Web Host?

One interesting Web site I ran across in this past week was MyBadHost.com. They are taking a very interesting approach to dealing as the middle man when it comes to fights between Web host and Web hosting client. The following was taken from a thread about MyBadHost.com written over at the BrowseHosts.com forums:

We take reports on bad web host and do a complete investigation. We try to help you negotiate with your host to get you your domain or refunds. We as well sign up for web hosting at places that offer unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space to actually see if we can add as many files as we can to use up about 10 GB.

As I said before, it is very interesting to see and I hope they do well in the long run.

Who is the Oldest Web Hosting Company?

I can not say I have ever spent much time wondering about this myself, but once again turning to the Web Hosting Chat forums have gotten me interested in something yet again.

According to etechsupport over at the Web Hosting Chat forums:

I think WorldCom Canada was the first commercial Internet access provider in 1991.

The World Wide Web is invented 1991. It has taken 40 years to reach that stage starting from late 1950, You should go through the brief history of internet.

In 1982 TCP/IP was established as the protocol for ARPANET. This provided one of the first definitions of an internet as a connected set of networks using TCP/IP, but defining ‘the Internet’ as all connected TCP/IP internets.

The first International WWW Conference was organized at CERN in Geneva in May 1994.

Web Site Design Help

All of The Web Hosting Show’s design help is sponsored by BrowseHosts. BrowseHosts is the most comprehensive Web hosting directory out there today.

The Web site we are taking a look at this week is HostingOption.

All the graphics and the standards of the layout look really great and really professional. The first thing that jumps out at me though is that your navigation is hard to find. You might try making the navigation for the page a little bigger and a little bolder. That way folks will know how to get to the next Web page.

On your front page, you have a few paragraphs of text, which is good, but I would space them out a little more. Right now thinks are so tight in there it makes that text hard to read. You might also work on your grammar some. I’m not sure if it is poor grammar or you are more worried about writing for the search engines than you are writing for human eyes.

I see a few things missing from the Web page that I would expect to see from a Web host. Where is the support page? Where’s your address? Company phone number? There are just some things that are expected to be shown by a Web hosting company. Other than that, it looks like a good start and I can not wait to see what you do with the Web site in the next few weeks!

Web Hosting Web Site of the Week

I have seen plenty of Web sites that let you rate how hot you are. I have seen some that let you rate how hot your pet is. I have even seen a few that let you rate how great your Web hosting provider is. NameBays.com is the first place I have ever seen that lets you rate your domain name registar though.

The idea is simple, you are looking for a domain name and you want to know which registar is the best one to sign with. What if there was a Web site that made the selection process easy? What if a Web site that looked at all the domain name registars and gave you a rank and one to five star review?

That is what NameBays.com is doing right now. From price, ease of use, support and features you get reviews not from some guy typing them out. No, they have real customers come back to review their own domain name registars.

So what took so long for this type of Web site to get out there and into the market? I have no idea. Check it out though and let them know that I sent you there!
