When it comes to web hosting for podcasts, a lot of this specialized hosting field has yet to be figured out. Sure, you have your specialized plugins, content management systems made for podcasting, and a better understanding of it around the world. When push comes to shove though, which is better, hosting everything from one place, or splitting your web hosting up between a shared host and a specialized audio hosting service?

When it comes to web hosting for podcasts, a lot of this specialized hosting field has yet to be figured out. Sure, you have your specialized plugins, content management systems made for podcasting, and a better understanding of it around the world. When push comes to shove though, which is better, hosting everything from one place, or splitting your web hosting up between a shared host and a specialized audio hosting service?

That is just about the question Charley posed to me the other day:

In your opinion, is it preferable to have your blog and podcast mp3s hosted on the same server, or would it be better to keep the audio files with one host, and the web site files with another host?

For many years, I did this very podcast in a two host setup.

I was using Blogware as my blogging engine, then donated hosting space from a friend to host the audio files from. Back then, there weren’t a lot of dedicated podcast hosting solutions, and the whole process was new to all of us, I think. Of course now I host both the audio files and the web site files in the same place. So being one who has done it both ways, let me tell you which method is best.

Let Your Wallet Have It’s Say

For the most part, you should do whatever set up is best for your wallet at the time. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars in the effort to look like a professional. Go for the cheapest setup that works best for you. So with that said the “all in one” hosting would be my choice out of the two.

Now, that is not to say that specialized podcast hosting, like they provide at libsyn, does not have its place. You might find your web site host is giving you issues after a hundred episodes or so, due to the fact that your using up so much disk space and bandwidth for those files. In that case it might be better off going with somebody who specializes in hosting your audio files for you.

So if you can get away with getting started on a shared hosting plan at any web host out there, I would do it – however if they give you fits, then moving to a specialized podcast host would be the next best route before moving into something like VPS or dedicated hosting.

Thanks to Charley for the excellent question – and be sure to check out his podcast – Cross Driven Radio.

Now, I will not create a new podcast or a blog. Instead I am going back to my roots, and diving back into producing another book – shades of the long forgotten Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting, which was the inspiration for this podcast four years ago.

So what can you expect? I’m not really sure just yet, other than I am looking to offer to the public at large tutorials, tips and advice on how to market your web site or online business, with as little cost to you as possible. Think of it as a good ol’ southern boy’s guide to marketing.

As soon as I have more information on the project, I’ll be sure to share it with you here. I hope it is as successful as my other projects are, and that most of all, you will get plenty of use out of it.

Here are my favorite podcasts from the year gone byhttp://www.webhostingshow.com.

Web Hosting to Go – Episode 169 – October 20th

I will have a large data center mashup map, a side of hosting tools (just remember to hold the tomatoes), a HP performance-optimized datacenter and a definition on what domaining is all about? For here or to go? I think I am about ready to go – because the Web hosting Show is now on the air.

The Magnificent Fantastico – Episode 168 – October 6th

Who would have a clue that a few years later on down the road I would have a chance to speak with one of the magicians behind the magic at Netenberg to find out more about this favorite cPanel addition.

Bobcares About Support – Episode 166 – September 22nd

You want to make sure they are in good hands. One company that promotes themselves as those good hands to trust is Bobcares.

They specialize in support for small, medium and large hosting companies.

Paul Hirsch of the AIHSP stopped by to answer a few common questions we all have about this new association of internet and hosting service providers.

Personally, I am fully behind any organization that promotes the success of the hosting industry as a whole. The AIHSP looks to be on the right track.

We have tons of great tips to help you lower your web hosting bills. That is not all though, but we have to leave some of it for the show. The Web Hosting Show is now on the air.

When Spam Attacks – Episode 157 – July 14th

The king of all spam has also met his fate. Spams not the only thing we got on the line up today, there is a lot of hosting news, and information coming to you. So stand back, there is a Web Hosting Show coming through!

Hosting Hustle – Episode 155 – June 23rd

Let me just say I got lots to talk about this week from domain marketing to somebody spitting in your web hosting fast food. Confused? Good I like to leave you wanting more and well, here it comes!

On today’s special edition of the Web Hosting Show we have in the studio Emory Rowland of Clickfire.com. Emory has been an insider in both the web hosting and web development worlds for a long time – so there are many topics I would like to pick his brain about. Today though we will be cover from head to toe the world of web hosting reviews.

Did you know that the Web Hosting Show was Yakov Smirnoff’s favorite way to spend a lazy afternoon? Ok, maybe that isn’t true but I will update you on the rise of the Soviet Union domain name extension as well as pull the curtain other myths and rumors about SEO. Now just as long as Yakov’s lawyers don’t shut me down, the Web Hosting Show is on the air.

Today I’ll show you how to paint a better picture for support of your hosting problems as well as…

Well a lot more hosting podcast goodness right here on this week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show.

The Web Hosting Show has been rocking the web hosting industry for three year now, and hopefully for many more years to come.

No surprises, no special guests no fluff will be here today though. I am just going to do my job and give you a grade A podcast you will soon not forget.

The hosting doctor is in and is ready to see you now. There are several sicknesses out there in the web hosting world that could bring you down.

I’ll inform you about those, and let you know of a few hyper-linked medications to check out too. The Web Hosting Show includes no side effects and an awesome orange-like flavor I’m sure you will enjoy.

You ever wonder why hosting people always seem so up to beat and happy? Maybe it is due to the fact we have to be due to dealing with customer relations all day.

Maybe it is because the angry part of our brain died a long time ago. Shiny happy hosting people rejoice, the Web Hosting Show is on the air.

With 2009 on the way, that means there will be even more web site web hosting podcasts, interviews, web site improvements and oh so much more. If you have any feedback you wish to share of the past year’s content please feel free to do so here.

Ever have one of those periods of time where it seems like nothing is going right? Two weeks ago my main podcasting powerhouse of a machine was fried and I was still waiting to get it back from HP. Last weekend, I had no power due to a line of wicked weather. This week I am knocking on wood and tossing spill salt over my shoulder because thus far, nothing has interupted me.

This week marks a big mile stone for me and for you. This podcast marks the 3rd year the Web Hosting Show has been around, creating podcasts week after week to help you learn more about and get more out of the web hosting industry. In previous years I have had bigger celebrations but this year I’d like to tone it down a ‘bit.

I often get asked a few general questions about this show and how I do things so I thought this week’s show would be a perfect time to answer some frequently asked questions.

When and how did this podcast start up?

This podcast was a project I wanted to do after writing Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting. After that eBook was finished, I needed something to spend my time on – and with podcasting still being an infant those days, I thought I would try to put together a weekly show. Three years later, I have yet to find a reason to stop yet.

Who are you to tell me about web hosting?

I’m just a guy who has a passion for the web hosting business. I’ve been described as a cheerleader by some, but personally I don’t think I look that good in a skirt. I started in the hosting industry back in 2003 – working as a level one support guru. Then I worked my way up to becoming both a customer service director, then manager. In late 2004 I was fired from my day to day hosting duties and decided to give freelance writing a shot. From there till 2006 I wrote about the hosting industry and worked for several Online juggernauts till I came back to customer service work at Lunarpages in September of 2006. I guess if you wanted to consider that a “day job”, my role there is the forum mod and “sales guy”.

What advice do you have to give other podcasters?

If anybody else out there wanted to do what I do about any topic out there under the sun, I would tell them to just give it a shot. You’ll never know if your any good unless you stop being afraid of failure and get of your rear end and try. I have been far from successful at everything I have done (everybody has a bad idea from time to time) but get an idea, grab a mic and talk. If the listeners come, they come. If they don’t then you at least can say you gave it your best shot.

What is next for the Web Hosting Show?

Well, with 400 to 500 episode downloads a month I am happy to say the Web Hosting Show’s audience continues to grow day after day, and podcast after podcast. As an example, here is my feed stats from day one to the present:

I want to keep doing what I’m doing, hopefully do it well.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

On this podcast I was thrilled to get to have a sit down chat with Host Search’s Web Editor John Hughes. Because of the Web Hosting Show, I have known John for a few years as one of the public voices and go to guys for Host Search. He really is one of the “good guys” in the hosting industry.

Host Search is one of the most established, most influential and most widely respected web hosting directory on the Web. Just by viewing their front page you can see they tackle everything from hosting interviews, to news and discussions.

There is a lot of good quality content there for you to comb through no matter if you are a web hosting guru or just a guy that got his first web site. I like Host Search because it is a resource everybody can get something out of.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Now I am a little ashamed to admit this, because it is the first time it has happened to me. We are all friends here though, amigos all around – right? I got an E-mail from a guy who wanted to know if I knew of a good place to do a little podcast hosting.

The problem? While going through my inbox – I lost his E-mail so I did not get the chance to reply. I am sorry for that – deeply sorry. I will let you know my thoughts though on this matter.

Now, as it is with any Web host shopping that you do, you need to find a Web host that delivers what you want and what you need. With podcasts, you are going to be dealing with a lot of large audio files, so disk space and bandwidth are a big “must have”.

You will also need a place that will support the posting back end that you wish to use. Now I would suggest WordPress myself – but there are a lot of CMS and blogging software suits to choose from out there.

The folks at libsyn.com have been a big force since day one and I would suggest you give them a shot as well. They specialize in podcast hosting and they have been doing it well almost since the whole podcasting revolution started out.

One thing I like that they do is the price model is based on what you need. If you aren’t very popular yet – you don’t pay much. The more you grow in popularity though – the bigger your bills will get.

This gives folks who are not sure about the whole podcasting experience a chance to get their feet wet without putting down too much for a Web hosting account.

Taking a peak at what is going on in the Web hosting industry’s news division, the WHIR is reporting:

Domain registrar and Web hosting provider Go Daddy announced on Tuesday it has expanded its sponsorship advertising agreement with Internet television network Revision3 to include all of Revision3 Internet television shows.

I am happy to see that GoDaddy realizes this is a big market that has an audience and it just looking for somebody to toss money at them. Of course, since Revision3 has a few more A-listers and Web celebs, I bet they are getting a better deal that the one GoDaddy tossed my way a few weeks back.

All and all though, I think this is a very good thing for Web content. It is also a big check mark in the ol’ alternative advertising world as well.

“We’ve been happy with our podcast advertising,” says Barb Rechterman, executive VP at Go Daddy. “Promoting Revision3’s new TV network is a natural extension for us. These guys are onto something big. At Go Daddy, we recognize the importance of innovation and the folks at Revision3 are leading the pack.”

This is an audience that is captivated enough to download a show and watch it. They are not going to mind one or two ads jumping in there from time to time. I think it will be only a matter of time before you see more companies like GoDaddy jumping in for this type of marketing and advertising.

I have watched this little challenge I guess you could call it make its rounds around the Internet and wondered when it would get to me. Well it has hit (or tagged as the kids say), so I guess I will play along and share with you all. I am a pretty open book, so coming up with five things that you do not know about me is kind of hard.

1. I have always been obsessed with recording myself. When I was a kid I used to make mixed tapes of songs and do little radio DJ type segments in between. Of course back then it was only for my own entertainment. In high school I did color commentary (I was the voice of the EAW) for our backyard wrestling federation. Now I record a little podcast that a few people listen to.

2. If I had not gotten my first job in the Web hosting industry and had not gone down that path, I would probably have either turned to something more artistic or professional wrestling. I have been drawing as long as I can remember and a wrestling fan even longer. All is not lost though, because I get to live out one of my dreams through my good buddy SB-1.

3. I am totally addicted to music from Final Fantasy. One of my prized possessions is the soundtrack from Final Fantasy VI. I have always been a fan of the series, but I do have to say I think Final Fantasy VI was the best of the best thus far. I never really got into everybody else’s favorite (Final Fantasy VII).

4. I have been both a customer service manager and a customer service director for a Web hosting company. No, I still do not know what the difference is between the two.

5. I am far from being a know it all about Web hosting. In a lot of ways, I am trying my best to learn about the business every day, just like you. One of the misconceptions with this show is that I am some sort of Web hosting genius – but I wouldn’t call myself that. I am a fan. There is a lot of stuff I do know, but a lot of stuff I am still learning with the rest of you as well. The day I stop learning about it will probably be the day I retire or the day I die.. which ever of those two happens first.

Alright, so now I have to find five other folks to tag? I’ll pick the Web Hosting Finds Blog (because it is awesome), Matt Hartley (because he’s a cool dude as well), Inside ISPCON, anybody who wishes to at Lunartics, and the Web Hosting Geek (to prove to me he is still alive).

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

I hate idiots as much as the next person, and sometimes these idiots are able to slip by the Web hosts and get Web sites. Now is this the Web host’s fault? No. No matter who the Web host is, they can not do a background check on every person that wants to host a Web site with them.

This recent story, ripped from today’s headlines though is a welcome early holiday gift to those of us who hate these morons out there in the World.

Web hosting provider HostGator has recently been asked by the Tampa-Florida office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations to drop one of the Web sites it hosts that supports calls to kill Muslim children.

Now not to get into politics, because I refuse to cover them on a podcast about Web hosting, this is just wrong and I am happy to see that HostGator has taken these folks down. Here is some more of the story I’d like to share.

Under the headline, “Love Your Kids? Fear For Their Future? Kill All Muslim Kids,” the Web site”s owner, who lives in the Tampa area, wrote, “Makes sense to me. After all, if Muslims are raising their little crumb-snatching, curtain climbing, ankle biting rug rats to strap on bombs in order to kill us, it is logically correct to assume that in order to stop that from happening we need to kill all Muslim kids. Starting now.”

This type of content on the Web should not be stood for. I know some people out there might speak up for free speech in this situation.

Hate speech is not a protected right though. Also, other people have the same right to say this type of content is just wrong.

The moral of the story is that if you see a Web site that might seem a little fishy to you, you should always try to hunt down the Web host and ask if they know they are hosting such content.

Welcome to the Web Hosting Show, the number one Web hosting podcast out there today. I am the .htaccess to your Web hosting directory, Mitch Keeler. As always the bandwidth for this podcast is provided by WebHostingChat.com so please be a good Web hosting patron and check them out as well.

I recently changed up my own blog some in the style department, and I am considering doing the same for WebHostingShow.com. Now that I have several jobs and projects going, I might not have time to do it all in one day though. This is where you come in though, what would you like to see “go away” or “come into” the new layout? I can’t promise a date that everything will be finished, but I can say I’d like to get it rolled out before the two year birthday of this podcast. So if you have an opinions on the matter, please drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com.

Don’t start sending your ideas in yet though, because you have a podcast to listen to! Let us get things started like we always do with the latest Web hosting headline.

Web Hosting News and Views

Google’s Blog Hosting Gets Hacked

Google’s Blogger publishing service experienced an outage the week before last, which kept Blogger.com and the Blogspot hosting service offline for two hours.

A hacker broke into Google’s main official blog on Saturday, hosted on Blogger, and posted a false message stating that Google decided to cancel a joint click-to-call advertising project with eBay. Google patched the bug by last Sunday and removed the hacker’s message, but not before it went widely noticed causing confusion among Google observers.

In a short note posted on Blogger Status, Google stated a “network malfunction” caused the outage. Google reports that no data was lost during the outage.

In early 2003, Google bought Blogger when it bought Pyra Labs. Blogger was once considered a leader in the blogging revolution but, according to IDG News, they have been criticized by some for not enhancing and upgrading the pioneering service.

Web Hosting Site of the Week

I found another AJAX powered domain name searching tool. Domjax.com might take over as my favorite out of all the domain name tools I have found thus far.

DomJax.com is the domain name search engine that tracks your domain name searches, so you don’t have to keep searching, copying and pasting. The name DomJax is a clever combination of “Dom” taken from Domain and “Jax” taken from the term AJAX. Web 2.0 techniques like Ajax and Dom-scripting were embraced to help enhance usability.

After you type in the domain name phrase you are looking for, you are given a plethora of options to play with. Not one AJAX domain name search tool has this many links to play with and do research from. I would list them all here, but for the sake of time it would be best for you to just go check it out and see them all for yourself.

The interface is clean, the results are nice, and they even have a blog where you can keep track of the latest happenings.

Q and A with the Web Hosting Guru

So what is the difference between a parked domain and an addon domain?

Now a lot of Web hosting companies these days are allowing folks to host multiple domain names from one account. Now where most people get confused is when the Web host starts throwing out all these terms that do not make much sense to the regular Joe or Jane off the street.

So what is a parked domain name? A parked domain name is when a domain name is pointed at the same spot your standard domain name is pointed at. Lets say you have mitch.org parked on top of mitch.com. In this case, anybody who went to either domain name would be directed towards the same Web site. Depending on the URL you typed in, the URL in the address bar should reflect the changes.

So what is an addon domain name? This is a nice tool to allow Web hosting customers to host more than one Web site from a Web hosting account. I could have WebHostingShow.com and MitchKeeler.com both being two different Web sites hosted at the same hosting account. This is usually done by pointing the secondary domain name at a folder on your Web hosting account.

For more domain name goodness, you might go search the WebHostingShow.com archives for more information.

Now you know what you are really getting with your Web hosting account. Most Web hosts are not trying to confuse you with these terms. The problem is that most Web hosting folks don’t understand that these terms are not very “user friendly” to the general public. So, don’t hate the Web hosting players, hate the Web hosting game.

Web Hosting Tip of the Week

Speaking of questions, here is a question that I get from time to time about domain name registrations. What do you do when you have signed up with a domain name register that has gone bad?

For the sake of making things easy let me give you an example.

Sally signs up with a domain name registrar in South America, but she doesn’t know that because it looks professional and nice. The South American domain name register goes out of business six weeks later, and sill has control of Sally’s domain name. So, most would say, “Hey Sally, go find yourself a new domain name – your pretty screwed!” but that might not be the case.

That is about time anybody in this situation should visit the InterNIC Registrar Problem Reports. From there you can report your domain name troubles, and if all goes well you might get control of your domain name back.

This is a resource I am happy to share, because not too many people know about it. So if you or somebody you know have fallen victim to a domain name register gone bad, don’t just take it. You need to take action.

Hello, I am Mitch Keeler, the media rock star of the Web hosting industry, and allow me to welcome you to a little podcast I like to call the Web Hosting Show. Episode 77 of the Web Hosting Show is being brought to you by WebHostingChat.com and Ping! Zine.

Now before we get started with today’s show, I almost have an announcement to make. The reason it is just an “almost” for right now, is it won’t be finalized till sometime next week (I hope). Once it is all said and done though, I should be back working inside of the Web hosting industry. The folks over at Lunarpages have been nice enough to offer me a job doing pre-sales chat and forum moderation.

Don’t worry though, nothing about this show or any of my other projects will change. I just need something to make me a little more financially stable. In other words, Mitch needs a little ‘bit of an income.

Anyways though, this isn’t the show where I talk about my employment here and there, this is the number one Web hosting podcast in all the land. So let’s get to business and check out this week’s Web hosting headline.

Web Hosting News

DemoDemo Launches Partner Site

Flash Web hosting tutorials provider DemoDemo announced on Monday it has launched its new partner site OnlineSupport.org, an online support service for webmasters and Web site operators.

Oh goody! A new Web hosting resource Web site! Let’s continue to read here.

“Aside from being a useful free online resource, OLS is now positioned as an extremely targeted venue for Web host advertising,” says DemoDemo.com president Vito Ceniti.”

Ceniti says he is confident that Web hosts will be able to use the site to advertise to niche markets.

Now for those of you who don’t know what DemoDemo does, they do video tutorials for a number of Web hosting scripts and control panels. Over at OnlineSupport.org it looks like they are making use of their own video tutorial work to put together one heck of a nice resource. Along the way, if you just happen to want to buy what you see, you can always click that link to go to DemoDemo.com and do so.

This is a resource worth checking out, because it is both innovative from the outside looking in and the inside looking out. It has a lot to offer.

Web Hosting Site of the Week

Need help generating a sitemap for Google’s sitemap service?

Site Map Builder helps you generate Google SiteMap XML which you can place into your root directory for Google to index your Web site. The sitemap XML follows a certain syntax that Site Map Builder will generate for you. Just copy and save the resulting code as sitemap.xml.gz and upload into your root, then register your sitemap at Google.

Want to check it out and give it a shot? You can do so at SiteMapBuilder.net.

Hot Topic in Web Hosting

So when it comes to dedicated Web hosting, where do you start? To tell you the truth, the last time I had to talk or write about dedicated hosting was way back when I wrote Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting. Dedicated hosting isn’t something we all deal with day to day because it costs a lot of money and gives most people more space than they know what to do with.

You see with a dedicated Web hosting server, you are made the king of the machine. You might share it with one or two other people, or you might go at it alone. The equipment and connectivity are fully managed by the hosting firm, and you pretty much have to handle the rest.

How much does it cost? Well most dedicated servers are anywhere from $100 to $1500 a month, depending on the Web host and the size of the server in question. Now because of that price, these big boys are usually used by people who have a large empire to manage. If you are running a Web site like Amazon.com or Digg.com you might even have to use several dedicated servers for the entire Web site.

So, as you can see a dedicated server is not for everyone. Ninety percent of the time, I would say a virtual Web hosting plan will keep your butt covered. However, if you have a big idea or you are planning a big Web site, dedicated might be the way to go.

Web Hosting Questions and Answers

This week’s question comes from Lou via the ol’ Web Hosting Show E-mail bag. He writes…

Hi Mitch, you put on one of the best podcasts out there. I was wanting to know if you knew of a place that talked more about data centers? I have been wanting to know more, but most hosting forums don’t have big areas dedicated to it. Any recommendation would be welcome.

Well Lou, I have the place for you! DataCenterTalk.com is one of the few forums I know of that is totally dedicated to talking about data center topics of discussion. This would be a great place for you to start learning more about the data center business, ask questions and get answers.

The team that runs Data Center Talk is the same team that runs Web Hosting Chat as well, so I know they are good people.

Final Web Hosting Thoughts

This week, you should have more than enough podcasts to play catch up on. So instead of launching something else you need to listen to, I want you to give me some feedback. This time around, I’d like to know if you think I should cut back on the number of supporters per Web Hosting Show episode.

I have tried to make the “supporter time” in each show as small as I can, but if you want I can come up with a new way of doing things. One idea I had was having one supporter per podcast. For an example, at the start of the show I would mention the show was brought to you by Web Hosting Chat and Ping! Zine. Once I hit the bottom of the supporter list, I’ll just start back at the top.

Web Hosting Chat will stay on as a supporter of every episode because they are the one flipping the bill for the bandwidth around here.

So leave me your thoughts, your comments, your ideas on this post and I’ll see how I can make this podcast better for you.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Hello, I am the media rockstar of the Web hosting world, Mitch Keeler and I want to welcome you to this audio transmission I like to call the Web Hosting Show. Each week I try to cover the best the Web hosting world has to offer thanks to the help of WebHostingChat.com. Without them there would be no Web Hosting Show so be sure to check them out, post a few messages and let them know what you think of the show.

What is going on with me? Well this week I finished up the redesign of HostingHoopla.com. I added a three column layout on that bad boy, with some new colors and more content than you can shake a stick at. Go check it out, and let me know what you think of the new look.

Also, I wanted to let you all know about a challenge I got last week from a Web Hosting Show listener named Mark. Mark told me he bet I couldn’t do this entire episode without pre-writing my show notes. Well, I am about to prove him wrong because I’m not writing anything but links past this line for this week only. Better or worse? I’ll let you leave your comments on that as well.

Hello I am the media rock star of the Web hosting industry Mitch Keeler, and I want to welcome one and all to the number one Web hosting podcast out there today, the Web Hosting Show. This podcast is supported by Web Hosting Chat. While your listening to me here, why don’t you pop in and give them a visit?

Now as I said earlier, this show is all about Net Neutrality. Since this whole debate started I have been getting E-mails each week asking me to cover this topic, so here you go. Now before we get too deep into the rabbit hole, I’m going to play for you a little of Senator Ted Stephens. To catch you up to speed he is the guy in charge of defeating the idea of Net Neutrality so the telcos out there can charge popular Web sites more because they are using up all the Internet!

I’ll be sure to play a little more later in the show as well. Now it is time though to get into this week’s latest news.

Hosting Headline

This week’s Web Hosting Headline is brought to you by the Web Host Magazine & Buyer’s Guide. Go check them out at WebHostMagazine.com.

Web Hosting Pioneer, Superb Internet, Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Founded in 1996, Superb Internet is commemorating 10 years of Web hosting excellence. The company was first to introduce private server technologies and high-bandwidth affordable self-managed dedicated servers. To celebrate, Superb is offering multiple special offers.

Imagine being one of the world’s first ever web hosting companies. Imagine the guts it took to offer a product that was years ahead of it’s time. Then imagine keeping that company thriving after the devastation of the dotcom boom and bust cycle. If you can imagine that, then you can begin to appreciate the achievements of Superb Internet Corporation.

Mitch’s Thoughts: Well let me be the latest to tell Superb Internet happy birthday! Ten years is a long time for any Web host to be a success. When you look at how many open up and fail on a yearly basis, lasting ten years is really a big deal in our industry.

With so many younger companies around as well, it makes Superb look like the wise old grandfather that we could all learn something from. If your one of the younger companies out there, I’d ask these folks how to stand the test of time.

Now I often try to stay away from politics and my writing (or in this case, broadcasting) but I have been reading about something that I think should be a grave concern of Web hosts and Web hosting clients. How many of you have heard of Net Neutrality? If you haven’t, Net Neutrality is referring to the current state of the Internet where no matter who you are and what you are trying to access, all Internet traffic is treated the same.

Now why is this such a hot debate? Well some of the large telecommunication companies out there want don’t want Net Neutrality. They would rather charge companies like Yahoo, Google and Amazon a little more on the side to make sure the Web site reaches us (the customers) as quickly as it can. If they do not pony up the cash, they get knocked down.

If this happens, it will create a two tier Internet. That is a bad thing in my opinion. It might start with the big guys like Amazon and Google, but you can be rest assured that it would come down to regular Web hosts and Web hosting clients in due time. The Web hosting industry is enjoying growth like it has never seen before and if the telecoms had their way, it would stop.

So how do these large companies defend themselves? Here is a good summary that I found via Lockergnome.com:

Opponents of Net Neutrality (companies like AT&T and Comcast) stress that the Internet is already regulated by several agencies that would not allow them to block access to specific sites and that the free market should be left to shape the future of the Internet.

They go on to stress that in order to take the Internet to the next level of content (video, voice, etc.) they need to be able to charge for it. Innovation gets stifled with regulation, in their opinion.

So do you want to do something about this? That is what a lot of folks are saying right now. The best thing you can do is write your senators and congressmen and ask them where they stand on this issue, and let them know where you stand as well. Do we really want clueless old men who are in the pocket of the telcos to be shaping the face of the Internet? I think not.

Web Hosting Site of the Week

This is the Web site you need to check out if you want to do more research and learn more about the whole Net Neutrality issue. They have tons of great information and links on every inch of the topic. Here is how they describe it all on the Web site:

The SavetheInternet.com Coalition is a real grassroots alliance of organizations, citizens, businesses and bloggers that have banded together to protect Internet freedom. The Coalition believes that the Internet is a crucial engine for economic growth and free speech. We are working together to urge Congress to preserve Network Neutrality, the First Amendment for the Internet that ensures that the Internet remains open to new ideas, innovation and progress.
