When it comes to services based around the web hosting industry, I really like the ones that don’t just add to the noise. They really answer a need the industry has and are unique in how they pull that job off. That is the perfect description for Press Advance.

If your a web host or anybody who is even remotely related to the hosting industry, you might be in need of their services. Here is a little more information about them from their web site:

Our press release service includes comprehensive writing, editing and distribution of press releases for companies in the Web development, design and hosting industries. Press Releases are tools used to communicate with the news media information regarding new products, announcements, partnerships and other newsworthy items.

Just in case you missed it I talked to the man in charge of the press release writing empire there, and widely known as “that press release guy” in the hosting industry – Dan Garon on last week’s episode of the Web Hosting Show.

From news, to press releases, to conversations here is the best of the best as far as hosting RSS feeds go.

1. Web Hosting Talk [RSS Feed!] – Yes, WebHostingTalk.com does RSS feed output now. You can click on the RSS Feed link on the main page to get a selection of good ways to keep track of things there. This is probably the biggest overall improvement they made in the last big update they rolled out.

2. The Web Hosting Show [RSS Feed!] – Ok, go ahead and call my an egotistical manaiac, I can take it. If your listening you know this is a great resource for all kinds of hosting news, interviews, help and random fun. If your not subscribed then what are you waiting for?

8. The WHIR Blogs [RSS Feed!] – Wasn’t the WHIR already on this list? Well contrary to even my first thoughts the WHIR Blogs have bloomed into a really neat source for all types of industry opinions and coverage. Put on by the team behind the Web Host Magazine and Buyer’s Guide this is a resource that might be light on quantity but high on quality.

A Few More Worth Mentioning…

Here are some other good content management system resources to check out:

Now for the sake of keeping things simple – for today’s show we are going to go with my favorite WordPress. Now should you download WordPress from its Web site and install or install via your control panel’s easy “one-click” install? I would say do it the hard way. Navigate your favorite browser towards WordPress.org, hit the download link and pick up the .zip download file.

Here are a few other suggestions for blogging scripts you could use:

You want a blogging script that will be easy enough for you to manage and that has plenty of other users. The reason you want to use one of the more popular choices out there is because when you run into trouble, figuring out a problem is often easier to do in a group. There are a lot of WordPress resources out there so that would be why it would be my suggestion for the best script you could use.

What Do You Need, Customer Service?

Web hosting, along with many other companies out there today is largely based around the relationship of a business with its customers. Without one, you can not have the other. Just think of it as the yin and yang of how our economy works.

Douglas is one of the customer service experts or gurus out there that does his best job to improve that relationship between a company and its clients. Think of him as a therapist for customer relations. I just recently started reading through his Service Untitled blog on the subject and honestly I can not stop reading it.

Here are some of his most recent posts that I found interesting.

From Web hosts to Web hosting clients – I promise everybody will walk away from listening to this Monday’s interview with him with a ‘bit of knowledge you didn’t know ahead of time.

What are Server Resources?

ResourcesOne sticking point in Web hosting that is hard for some people to wrap their heads around is server resources. Now this usually stand for the amount of CPU and RAM your Web site can use on the server that you are on.

So why is this such a confusing topic, and why do so many hosts not want to talk about it? Well, it might not be as taboo ask you might think.

Now as an example of what server resources means to you and me, think of it like your computer. Lets say you have ten programs open and running. You are browsing the Web, checking your E-mail, running a chat client, burning a DVD and more. Now running all those programs at once can be a little taxing to your machine if it is not powerful enough. Power for a computer (and for a server) is often measured by the CPU and RAM it has access to.

Now lets say your DVD burning program starts to go wild, it is using up so many resources that it slows the rest of your programs down to a crawl. What would you do? You’d shut down the DVD burning so your other programs could come back from a near death experience.

Now if you have a Web site that is using too many server resources, you could experience the same effect. On one server you have many Web sites hosted. Each one would be like a program, using it’s share of the server’s resources. If one uses too much, it is usually “turned off” so the other ones are not effected. A Web host can much easily deal with one mad customer. When you have an entire server filled with pissed off people, well – lets just say that is no fun at all.

Now how can you fix this? Well moving up in plan type can often give you more resources to work with (if you can not bring your resource use back down). Going from a shared hosting environment to a dedicated one can give you a fighting chance because a dedicated plan has a smaller amount of Web sites on it. What does that mean for you? It means you have more server resources to work with.

So why don’t Web hosts tell you how many of the server’s resources are available to you? It is because the number in most cases is very low. It isn’t exactly a good selling point, so they are not going to share that information with you.

Also many servers are setup differently.

Server number one might be able to take a little more punishment than server number two. So that makes it really hard for a Web host to give you an exact number. Most scripts and services you would install on a Web hosting account these days are really good at managing your resources for you so they do not get out of hand. Every so often though, you might run into an issue like this – so it is good to know before hand what your situation is so your not yelling at your host saying “Where did my Web site go?”.

Best Web Hosting Web Sites

Over the past two years I have had my eyeballs grace many different Web hosting Web sites and services. A regular feature on this show for a long time was even dedicated to a Web hosting site of the week. So after seeing so many good tools and Web sites, I thought I would feature some of my favorites.

Now this is not the best of the best – but they are some of my favorites that I have gone to more than once, and continue to be excellent tools for anybody inside or out of the hosting industry.

DemoWolf Tutorials and DemoDemo.com

Both of these Web sites offer you a great place to purchase flash tutorials for your Web hosting business. They cover just about every control panel out there, so no longer do you have an excuse for your Web hosting customers to be left out in the dark. They are both industry leaders in the flash tutorial marketplace.

DomainTools.com

DomainTools.com is my number one favorite place to do any domain name whois searching, pinging, tracing – you name it and they do it. In my opinion they are the best domain name tool / Web site out there today. Their newest addition, PsychicWhois.com also looks like it will be a winner as well. It allows you to place a whois search box on any Web site out there today.

Ping! Zine and The WHIR

With both of these links, you have the top two hosting magazines in the entire hosting industry. Both places offer great paperback and digital hosting magazines and should both be listed as two of the best out there today.

Hosting Hoopla – Web Blogs, News, and Resources

Now those of you who have been following this podcast or me for very long knows that I had launched Hosting Hoopla a few months ago as a news reader. Well that idea has come and gone and is no longer. So what was I do to with a great hosting related domain name?

Well I decided to simplify things a ‘bit and give the hosting industry a new resource to have.

I guess you could call this Hosting Hoopla 2. The domain name is staying the same though. Just point your browser at HostingHoopla.com and you will have a better idea of what I am talking about.

This time around I wanted to create what you could call a “mega” list of Web hosting related resources. I have hosting news, forums, blogs and more all listed there. Also, as you can see from the layout I am accepting any and all links from anybody just by clicking on the huge icon you see at the top.

So this is my call out to all of you. Give me your links, give me your resources. This Web site will not work on just my own bookmarks alone. I need for you to give me the links you need to have handy so everybody can get something out of using the Web site.

You see my idea here is that you can have one Web site bookmarked (or saved to your favorites) and get the entire Web hosting industry at your finger tips. I have become tired of having too many links and not having an easy way of going through them. Now both myself and all of you have a quick and easy way to access what you want, what you need and what you love.

I am open to feedback though, as always – so if you have any to share about HostingHoopla.com please send it my way to mitch@mitchkeeler.com. Let me know what you want here and I will do my best to deliver.
